PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED FIGHTING

Diana thought I would explode.

She expected tears.

Questions.

Anger.

She wanted to see me lose control because that would prove something to her.

That I was still fighting for Ethan.

That I was still afraid of losing him.

But she misunderstood one thing.

I had already lost him.

The moment I heard him call another woman’s child “our baby”…

Something inside me had finally gone silent.

After that day, I became the perfect wife.

Too perfect.

I smiled when Ethan entered the room.

I thanked him when he brought me food.

I accepted his help when he adjusted my blanket.

Anyone watching us would have thought we were the happiest couple in the hospital.

Even Ethan started to relax.

Because he thought I had forgiven him.

He thought my silence meant acceptance.

He was wrong.

The day the doctor allowed me to walk outside for a few minutes, Ethan insisted on accompanying me.

He held my arm carefully.

The same hand that had pulled me out of the burning car.

The same hand that had held mine while we waited for death.

That was the cruelest part.

Ethan wasn’t completely fake.

He really did love me.

He really did risk his life for me.

But he also betrayed me.

And those two truths existed together.

Making everything hurt even more.

In the hospital garden, Ethan looked at me.

“Vivian.”

I turned.

“Yes?”

He hesitated.

“After we leave here…”

“Let’s go somewhere.”

I looked at him.

“Where?”

“Anywhere.”

“Just the two of us.”

For a second…

The old Vivian almost answered.

The woman who spent years believing Ethan was her whole world.

But that woman was tired.

So tired.

I smiled.

“Sure.”

His eyes softened.

He seemed relieved.

Like he had won me back.

But he didn’t know…

I wasn’t agreeing to stay.

I was saying goodbye.

That night, my father sent me the flight information.

One month.

Exactly thirty days.

The company in Canada had already approved my position.

The house was ready.

Everything was arranged.

The life I abandoned years ago…

Was waiting for me.

I stared at the ticket for a long time.

Then I saved it.

Not under my name.

Under a different folder.

A secret.

Just like the one Ethan had kept from me.

The next morning, something unexpected happened.

Ethan’s mother came to visit.

She hugged me tightly.

“Vivian.”

“I heard about the accident.”

“You scared us.”

I smiled.

“I’m fine now.”

She looked at Ethan proudly.

“My son really loves you.”

“He almost died saving you.”

I lowered my eyes.

Because I knew.

Everyone believed Ethan was a hero.

And maybe he was.

But heroes could also hurt people.

Then Diana’s name appeared on Ethan’s phone.

His mother saw it.

Her expression changed slightly.

“Who is that?”

Ethan immediately took the phone.

“No one.”

Too fast.

Too defensive.

His mother’s eyes narrowed.

But she didn’t ask.

Not yet.

Later that afternoon…

I received a message.

From an unknown number.

At first I thought it was a hospital notice.

But when I opened it…

My hands stopped moving.

It was a photo.

Ethan and Diana.

Taken three years earlier.

Before my wedding.

Before the accident.

Before everything.

Below the photo was a sentence:

“Vivian, you should know the truth before you leave.”

My heart tightened.

Because I already knew Ethan had cheated.

But the date on that photo…

Changed everything.

Three years ago…

Ethan and I were still engaged.

That was the year he told me:

“I don’t want children.”

“The timing isn’t right.”

“I want to focus on our future first.”

I believed him.

I defended him against my own family.

But the photo showed something else.

Diana was already there.

And she was already pregnant in the picture.

I looked at Ethan sleeping in the chair beside my bed.

The man who saved my life.

The man who destroyed my trust.

And suddenly I understood.

The accident wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.

It was only the moment I finally discovered it.

The next day, Ethan woke up to find something on the table.

Not a divorce paper.

Not a confrontation.

Just a small envelope.

With my handwriting.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was one sentence:

“Ethan, thank you for saving my life.”

He froze.

Then he read the next line.

“But saving someone once doesn’t give you the right to destroy them every day after.”

His face changed.

Because for the first time…

He realized my silence wasn’t forgiveness.

It was preparation.

That afternoon, the doctor came with the final examination results.

He looked at the report.

Then at me.

“Mrs. Hayes…”

“There is something we need to discuss.”

I looked up.

“What is it?”

The doctor hesitated.

“About the accident.”

“There was something unusual.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

He placed the document in front of me.

And the next sentence made my blood run cold.

“The brake failure…”

“Was not an accident.”
