PART 2: WHEN HIS WIFE STOPPED WAITING

Adrian thought my silence was temporary.

He thought that after a few days, I would return to the old Claire.

The Claire who questioned him.

The Claire who cried.

The Claire who still hoped that if she explained enough, he would finally understand.

But that woman was gone.

Three days after I came home from the hospital, Adrian started acting differently.

At first, he tried to pretend nothing had changed.

He bought dinner.

He asked if I needed anything.

He even sent me messages during work.

“Did you take your medicine?”

“Are you feeling better?”

Anyone watching from outside would have thought he was a caring husband.

But I knew him too well.

Adrian wasn’t worried because he loved me.

He was worried because I was no longer reacting.

The fourth night, he came home early.

That alone was unusual.

He stood at the kitchen door and watched me prepare tea.

“Claire.”

I looked up.

“Yes?”

He hesitated.

That hesitation used to make my heart soften.

Not anymore.

“Are you really okay?”

I smiled slightly.

“I’m fine.”

He frowned.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“No.”

His voice became heavier.

“Something is different.”

I placed the cup on the table.

“Maybe I finally stopped expecting something from you.”

The room became silent.

Adrian stared at me.

Like those words hurt him more than any argument.

Before, whenever Vanessa appeared…

I would ask:

“Why are you always with her?”

“Why do you choose her over me?”

“Do you even care about our marriage?”

But now?

I didn’t ask.

Because I already knew the answers.

A person who wants to choose you…

Doesn’t need to be convinced.

A week later, Adrian found the divorce agreement.

It was on my desk.

He wasn’t supposed to see it yet.

But maybe fate wanted him to.

I walked into the room and saw him holding the papers.

His face was pale.

“Claire.”

I stopped.

“Explain this.”

I looked at the document in his hand.

“Divorce agreement.”

His fingers tightened.

“You want a divorce?”

“Yes.”

The word came out calmly.

Too calmly.

Adrian looked more shocked by my calmness than by the divorce itself.

“After everything?”

I almost laughed.

“After everything?”

He nodded.

“We’ve been married for years.”

“I know.”

“I thought we could fix things.”

I looked at him.

“Did you?”

He went silent.

Because deep down…

He knew.

I was the only one trying to fix anything.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

The name appeared on the screen.

Usually, Adrian would immediately answer.

This time…

He looked at me first.

That small action told me everything.

He was afraid.

Not of losing Vanessa.

Of losing me.

I smiled.

“Why aren’t you answering?”

“It’s not important.”

A strange feeling appeared in his eyes.

Regret.

Maybe even panic.

Because for the first time…

He realized I wasn’t fighting for him anymore.

That night, Adrian went to find Laura Chen.

The lawyer who had prepared my divorce.

He wanted to stop everything.

He wanted to know if there was still a chance.

But Laura only looked at him coldly.

“Mr. Lu.”

“Do you know why Claire finally decided to leave?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Laura placed the documents on the table.

“Because she spent years being angry.”

“Anger means someone still cares.”

She paused.

“But when a person becomes quiet…”

“That means they have already accepted losing you.”

Adrian sat there for a long time.

Because he finally understood something terrifying.

The woman he ignored for years…

Was not asking him to come back.

She was closing the door.

The next morning, I received a message.

From Adrian.

Only three words.

“Please wait for me.”

I looked at the screen.

Once upon a time…

Those words would have made me cry.

Now…

They only made me tired.

I put down my phone.

Because this time, I wasn’t waiting.

Not for an apology.

Not for an explanation.

Not for him to finally realize my value.

But that afternoon…

When I arrived at my office, my assistant rushed over.

“Mrs. Lu.”

“There is a problem.”

I looked up.

“What happened?”

She handed me a folder.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Transfers.

And one name repeated again and again.

Vanessa.

My expression changed.

Because I suddenly realized…

Adrian hadn’t just hidden a woman from me.

He had hidden something much bigger.

And when the truth came out…

It wouldn’t only destroy our marriage.

It would destroy the life he had built with her.

Because this time…

I wasn’t leaving empty-handed.

I was taking back everything that was mine.
