PART 2: THE COMMANDER WHO LOST HIS WIFE BEFORE HE KNEW IT

Adrian stared at the marriage certificate on the table.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

He didn’t ask why I had investigated it.

He didn’t ask who told me.

He only stared at that fake document as if he had been waiting for this day.

I picked up my suitcase.

“Did you know?”

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Olivia…”

“Answer me.”

The room became silent.

For five years, I had waited for countless explanations.

Why he was always busy.

Why he never organized a real wedding.

Why he never introduced me officially at military events.

Why everyone called me “sister-in-law” but no one had ever seen our registration record.

I had created excuses for him.

Until the truth stood in front of me.

He lowered his eyes.

That was enough.

I laughed softly.

“Five years.”

“Five years, Adrian.”

“I gave up everything because I believed I was your wife.”

His hands clenched.

“I was going to explain.”

“When?”

I looked at him.

“After another five years?”

He couldn’t answer.

The next morning, I returned to the military district.

Not as Adrian Cole’s wife.

But as Olivia Bennett.

The name that had disappeared for years.

The woman who had once ranked among the best in the special unit.

The news spread quickly.

Some people recognized me immediately.

Others looked shocked.

“Isn’t that Commander Bennett?”

“She left five years ago…”

“Why did she come back?”

I ignored the whispers.

I entered the office of the personnel department and placed my transfer application on the table.

“I want to return to active duty.”

The officer looked at the document.

Then looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Very sure.”

That afternoon, Adrian came looking for me.

For the first time in years, he looked anxious.

Not like the cold commander everyone feared.

Just a man who had suddenly lost control of something.

“Olivia.”

I kept organizing my equipment.

“Commander Cole.”

The unfamiliar title made him stop.

“You never called me that.”

“You were never my husband.”

The sentence hit him harder than I expected.

His face changed.

“Don’t say that.”

“Why?”

“Because you know what we had.”

I turned around.

“What we had?”

I smiled.

“Adrian, did you ever love me?”

His mouth opened.

But no answer came.

“Did you love me when I gave up my position to take care of your mother?”

Silence.

“Did you love me when I couldn’t sleep for years because I was afraid she would need help?”

Silence.

“Did you love me when you introduced another woman as your colleague while letting everyone believe I was your wife?”

His expression became painful.

“Claire is not what you think.”

I interrupted.

“Don’t mention her.”

“She didn’t deceive me for five years.”

“You did.”

That night, Adrian returned to the hospital.

His mother, Evelyn, was awake.

When she saw him enter alone, she immediately asked:

“Where is Olivia?”

Adrian froze.

For years, his mother had depended on me more than anyone.

She knew every sacrifice I made.

Every night I stayed awake.

Every time I refused opportunities because of her condition.

“She left.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“What did you do?”

Adrian lowered his head.

For the first time, the proud commander had no words.

His mother slowly closed her eyes.

“You lost the only person who truly stayed.”

Three days later, I received a call from an unknown number.

I almost didn’t answer.

But the voice on the other side made me stop.

“Olivia.”

It was Adrian.

“Your mother-in-law wants to see you.”

I was silent.

Then I replied:

“She is not my mother-in-law.”

A long pause.

“I know.”

His voice was lower than before.

“That’s why I’m asking.”

“Please come.”

I looked at the military uniform hanging in front of me.

The uniform I had abandoned for him.

The life I had given away for him.

Then I remembered the fake certificate.

The fake marriage.

The fake promise.

“No.”

Adrian’s breathing stopped.

“Olivia…”

“This time, you don’t get to ask me to sacrifice something.”

I hung up.

But I didn’t know…

That same night, the military headquarters received an investigation report.

The fake marriage certificate had not been created by accident.

Someone had deliberately removed my records.

Someone inside Adrian’s family had ordered it.

And the name on the authorization document…

Was Claire Dawson.
