PART 2: THE DAY HE REALIZED HE WAS LOSING ME

For the first time in eight years, Alejandro Valdés had to wait for me.

And he hated it.

Before, no matter how late he came home, no matter how many promises he broke, no matter how many times he canceled plans at the last minute…

I was always there.

Waiting.

Forgiving.

Understanding.

But now, when his phone rang, I didn’t immediately answer.

When he sent a message, I didn’t immediately reply.

And that simple change made him realize something he had never considered.

I was no longer afraid of losing him.

Three weeks passed in Seville.

The project was progressing better than anyone expected.

My name started appearing in professional magazines.

The same people who once introduced me as “Alejandro Valdés’ wife” now introduced me as:

“Clara Reed, the designer who led the Seville project.”

For years, I had stood behind him.

Now, people finally saw me.

And Alejandro saw it too.

He saw the interviews.

The photos.

The congratulations from important clients.

He saw me smiling beside my team.

Happy.

Confident.

Different.

That was when he understood the biggest mistake he had made.

He thought I was waiting for him.

But I was building a life where he was no longer necessary.

One night, Alejandro called again.

This time, I answered.

—Clara.

His voice sounded unusually careful.

—Yes?

There was silence.

The old Alejandro would never have hesitated.

He was always certain.

Always confident.

But now…

He sounded like someone afraid of saying the wrong thing.

—Are you eating properly?

I almost laughed.

After everything, that was the first thing he asked.

—Yes.

—Are you sleeping enough?

—Yes.

Another silence.

Then he whispered:

—I miss you.

I looked at the city lights outside my hotel window.

Months ago, those words would have made me cry.

Now they only made me tired.

—Alejandro.

—Hmm?

—Do you miss me?

He immediately answered:

—Of course.

I smiled sadly.

—No.

—You miss the woman who was always waiting for you.

He stopped breathing for a second.

Because he knew I was right.

—Clara, I know I made mistakes.

—Mistakes?

I repeated softly.

—You forgot my award ceremony.

—You forgot our anniversary.

—You spent more time with Olivia than with your own wife.

His grip tightened around the phone.

—Nothing happened with Olivia.

—I know.

My answer surprised him.

—The problem was never whether something happened.

—The problem was that you made me feel alone while you were still standing beside me.

Alejandro didn’t speak.

For the first time, he had no explanation.

Because every explanation sounded like an excuse.

The next morning, something unexpected happened.

Olivia resigned.

The entire company was shocked.

But Alejandro knew why.

Before leaving, she sent him a message.

“She won.”

“Clara won.”

“I thought you would always choose me because she was too gentle to fight.”

“But I was wrong.”

Alejandro stared at those words for a long time.

Because they revealed something he didn’t want to admit.

Everyone had underestimated me.

Including him.

That weekend, he flew to Seville again.

But this time, he didn’t go to ask me to come home.

He went because he finally understood that love was not about owning someone who always stayed.

It was about protecting the person who chose to stay.

When he found me, I was leaving a meeting.

He stood in front of me.

No expensive suit.

No CEO attitude.

Just Alejandro.

The man I loved years ago.

—Clara.

I stopped.

—What are you doing here?

He looked at me.

And for the first time, he said the words he should have said years ago.

—I’m sorry.

I remained silent.

—I’m sorry that I made you feel like you were second.

—I’m sorry that I thought your love was something guaranteed.

His voice became lower.

—And I’m sorry that I only realized your importance when I felt you slipping away.

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I asked:

—If I had never left…

—Would you have realized anything?

Alejandro froze.

Because he knew the answer.

No.

And that was the most painful truth.

I picked up my bag.

—Alejandro.

He looked at me.

—I’m not leaving because I stopped loving you.

A trace of hope appeared in his eyes.

Then I continued:

—I’m leaving because I finally learned to love myself too.

His expression changed.

And at that moment, his phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His assistant.

The message contained only one sentence:

“Mr. Valdés, the board meeting has started. They are asking about Clara’s new contract.”

Alejandro looked at me.

Because he finally understood.

The woman he thought would always stand behind him…

was now standing on the same level.

And maybe soon…

far beyond him.
