PART 2: THE DAY JULIAN REALIZED I HAD REALLY LEFT

Fifteen days.

That was all it took for me to change.

Not because I stopped loving Julian Cole.

But because I finally stopped abandoning myself for him.

When he returned from Lin City, he probably expected everything to be the same.

The same house.

The same wife.

The same woman who would smile and ask if he was tired.

The same woman who would prepare his favorite meal and pretend she didn’t remember every time he chose Olivia Lane over her.

But the woman waiting for him was no longer that person.

The night Julian came back, I slept in the guest room.

Not because I wanted to punish him.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Simply because I had already accepted the reality he kept repeating.

We were getting divorced.

The next morning, I woke up early and continued packing my things.

A small suitcase.

A few books.

My documents.

The jewelry my grandmother left me.

Things that belonged only to me.

When I walked into the living room, Julian was already there.

He was sitting on the sofa.

Watching me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he asked:

—Are you really leaving?

I looked at him.

—Yes.

His eyebrows tightened.

—You already found an apartment?

—Not yet.

—Then why are you packing?

I smiled slightly.

—Because I don’t want to wait until the day you suddenly decide I should leave.

That sentence made him silent.

Before, I would have apologized.

I would have explained.

I would have softened my words because I was afraid of hurting him.

But now…

I simply told the truth.

Julian looked away.

—Claire, you know I didn’t mean it like that.

I stopped folding clothes.

—Which time?

He looked at me.

—What?

—The first time you said divorce?

I counted on my fingers.

—Or the second?

—Or the third?

His expression froze.

Because he knew.

Three times.

Three times he had used divorce as a weapon.

And three times I had been the one trying to save our marriage.

Until now.

—You always knew I wouldn’t leave.

His voice became quieter.

—That’s why you said it.

Julian didn’t answer.

Because I was right.

A few minutes later, his phone rang.

The name appeared on the screen.

Olivia.

I saw it.

He saw that I saw it.

For a moment, I thought he would reject the call.

But old habits were stronger.

He answered.

—Hello?

His voice immediately changed.

Softer.

Warmer.

The same voice I hadn’t heard in a long time.

I picked up my suitcase.

And walked past him.

This time…

He noticed.

—Claire.

I stopped.

But I didn’t turn around.

—What?

He looked at me.

Almost confused.

As if he couldn’t understand why I wasn’t fighting anymore.

—Where are you going?

I answered calmly:

—To start preparing my life after Julian Cole.

Then I left.

Three days later, Julian discovered something that shocked him.

The divorce agreement had already been completed.

My lawyer had sent everything.

No accusations.

No demands.

No fight over property.

Only one request.

A clean separation.

Julian read the documents several times.

Because he couldn’t understand.

Claire James, the woman who had spent eight years loving him…

Was leaving with almost nothing.

The lawyer looked at him.

—Mrs. James doesn’t want compensation.

Julian frowned.

—Why?

The lawyer replied:

—Because she said she doesn’t want anything that reminds her of a marriage where she was the only person trying.

Those words stayed in his mind all night.

That evening, he returned home.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Before, silence never existed there.

Because Claire always filled it.

Cooking.

Talking.

Laughing.

Waiting.

Now there was nothing.

Julian entered the kitchen.

On the table was a note.

Only one sentence.

“I hope Olivia gives you the happiness you chose.”

His hand tightened around the paper.

For the first time…

He felt something he couldn’t explain.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

The next day, Julian went to the office.

Everyone noticed something was wrong.

The usually calm CEO made several mistakes during meetings.

He interrupted people.

Lost focus.

Even his assistant noticed.

—Mr. Cole…

Julian raised his head.

—What?

—Are you okay?

He wanted to say yes.

But he couldn’t.

Because for the first time in eight years, nobody was waiting for him to come home.

Nobody was asking if he had eaten.

Nobody was reminding him to take care of himself.

Nobody was there.

And strangely…

That absence hurt more than he expected.

At noon, he saw a news article.

“Designer Claire James leads successful project and receives international recognition.”

Julian clicked.

The photos showed Claire at a conference.

Confident.

Elegant.

Smiling.

A woman he recognized.

But also didn’t recognize.

Because the Claire in those pictures…

Was not the woman who waited for him at home.

She was the woman she had become after giving up waiting.

His assistant entered.

—Mr. Cole, Miss Lane is here.

Julian closed the article.

—Tell her I’m busy.

The assistant was surprised.

Because for years…

Everyone knew Olivia always came first.

But now Julian didn’t even want to see her.

That afternoon, Olivia entered anyway.

She looked worried.

—Julian, are you angry with me?

He looked at her.

And for the first time, he didn’t see the fragile woman he always wanted to protect.

He saw someone who had always accepted being his priority.

While Claire accepted being forgotten.

—Olivia.

She smiled.

—Yes?

Julian was silent.

Then asked:

—Did you ever think about how Claire felt?

The smile disappeared from Olivia’s face.

—Why are you talking about her?

Julian looked down.

Because he finally understood.

The problem was never that Claire wasn’t enough.

The problem was that he had spent years making her feel that way.

That night, he returned home again.

But the house was empty.

The guest room was empty.

The master bedroom was empty.

Only one thing remained.

A photo from their wedding day.

Claire was smiling.

Julian was looking at her.

At that time, he thought he had unlimited time.

He thought she would always be there.

He was wrong.

His phone suddenly rang.

A message from Claire.

Only one line.

“Julian, tomorrow I’ll sign the final divorce papers.”

He stared at the message for a long time.

Then another message arrived.

“I hope you finally get the life you wanted.”

Julian sat alone in the dark living room.

And for the first time since he met Claire…

He was afraid.

Because he finally understood.

The woman who spent eight years chasing him…

Had finally stopped.

And now…

He was the one who didn’t know how to let go.
