PART 2: THE TRAP HE NEVER SAW COMING

Daniel called seven seconds after reading my message.

I watched his name flash across the screen.

Three weeks ago, I would have answered immediately.

Three weeks ago, I would have been desperate to hear his explanation.

Not anymore.

I let it ring.

Then again.

And again.

Finally, I answered.

“Hello, Daniel.”

His breathing was fast.

“Audrey, what did you do?”

I smiled.

Interesting.

Not “Are you okay?”

Not “Why are the accounts frozen?”

Not “I’m sorry.”

His first concern was himself.

“The accounts are frozen because they are under investigation,” I said calmly.

There was silence.

Then his voice became sharper.

“You can’t do that.”

“I didn’t.”

“You did.”

“No, Daniel. You did.”

I opened the folder beside me.

The same folder he had tried to steal.

“The moment you removed company documents from the safe without authorization, you triggered the security protocol.”

“You’re my wife.”

“That stopped mattering when you planned to leave me with nothing.”

His breathing changed.

For the first time, he sounded uncertain.

“Audrey, listen to me. This is a misunderstanding.”

I almost laughed.

A misunderstanding.

The favorite word of people who got caught.

“Then explain the passport.”

Silence.

“The cash.”

Silence.

“The bracelet.”

Longer silence.

Then he lowered his voice.

“You were watching me?”

“No.”

I looked at the security footage on my computer.

“I was protecting myself.”

At 10:00 AM, Daniel arrived at Sterling Global headquarters.

He walked into the building like he always did.

Confident.

Controlled.

Certain that everyone would still follow him.

But something had changed.

The employees who usually greeted him looked away.

The receptionist did not smile.

The security guard stopped him.

“Mr. Carter, your access has been temporarily suspended.”

Daniel froze.

“Excuse me?”

“I have instructions from the board.”

“The board works for me.”

The guard lowered his eyes.

“No, sir.”

That sentence was enough to make his expression change.

Because Daniel finally understood.

The world he thought he controlled…

was no longer his.

Inside the conference room, the board members were already waiting.

My attorney placed the evidence on the table.

Unauthorized transfers.

Forged signatures.

Hidden accounts.

Travel records.

Messages between Daniel and Chloe.

Every lie he had carefully built collapsed in front of him.

Daniel stared at the documents.

Then he looked at me.

“Audrey… you planned all of this?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“Then why?”

“Because I spent three weeks hoping I was wrong.”

That answer seemed to hurt him more than anger would have.

Because deep down, Daniel knew.

I had not destroyed our marriage.

He had.

The door opened.

Chloe Ruiz entered.

The same woman standing beside him in the airport photo.

Except now she wasn’t smiling.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

“Chloe? Why are you here?”

She looked nervous.

“I thought you said everything was handled.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Leave.”

But she didn’t move.

Instead, she placed a document on the table.

“I need to protect myself.”

Everyone became silent.

Daniel stared at the paper.

“What is this?”

Chloe swallowed.

“The agreement you made me sign.”

My eyes narrowed.

Agreement?

She continued:

“You promised that after leaving Audrey, you would transfer part of Sterling Global to me.”

Daniel went pale.

“Chloe, don’t.”

But it was too late.

She had already opened the folder.

Because the woman he betrayed me with…

was now betraying him.

That afternoon, Daniel received one more notification.

Not from the bank.

Not from the company.

From the court.

A temporary order had been issued.

His personal assets were frozen.

His passport was restricted.

And the investigation into financial fraud had officially begun.

He called me one last time.

This time his voice was different.

No arrogance.

No anger.

Only fear.

“Audrey… please.”

I closed my eyes.

For years, I waited for him to say those words.

But hearing them now felt empty.

“What?”

“I made a mistake.”

I looked out the window.

“No, Daniel.”

A long silence.

“You made a choice.”

And before he could answer, I ended the call.

Because Daniel spent years believing I was the woman who would always stay.

He never imagined I was the woman who would know exactly when to leave.

But what he didn’t know yet…

was that the bracelet he stole from my mother contained something far more valuable than diamonds.

And when the police examined it…

they would discover the final proof that would destroy everything he had built.
