PART 2: THE TRAP HIS FATHER LEFT BEHIND

Adrián Montero spent the entire morning believing the situation was a mistake.

A simple administrative problem.

A misunderstanding that could be solved with a few phone calls.

But every call ended with the same answer.

“Access denied.”

The company accounts were frozen.

The properties were under legal review.

The shares he had transferred to Valeria were no longer recognized.

And worst of all…

His position as president of the company had been temporarily suspended.

For the first time in years, Adrián felt something he had forgotten existed.

Fear.

—This is impossible.

He threw the phone onto the table.

—Everything was done legally.

Valeria sat on the sofa, still wearing the necklace that had belonged to my mother.

But now she no longer looked confident.

The arrogance had disappeared from her face.

—Adrián… what are we going to do?

He didn’t answer.

Because he had no answer.

For months, he had believed he was the one controlling everything.

He thought he had planned the perfect ending.

Remove Isabel.

Transfer the assets.

Start a new life with Valeria and their child.

But he never imagined that the woman he tried to destroy had been protected long before he decided to betray her.

At nine in the morning, my lawyer Julia and I entered the courthouse.

Samuel Robles was already waiting.

The former lawyer of my father.

The man who had disappeared from my life after my father’s funeral.

I looked at him.

—You knew this would happen?

Samuel nodded slowly.

—Your father suspected that one day someone would try to take advantage of you.

I lowered my eyes.

—He thought it would be Adrián?

A painful silence followed.

—He didn’t mention names.

Samuel opened a folder.

—But he knew that people change when money and power are involved.

I clenched my hands.

For ten years, I had defended Adrián.

I had believed that our marriage survived because we respected each other.

I had ignored every warning.

Every strange meeting.

Every late night.

Every moment when Valeria was suddenly “essential” to his life.

And all that time…

He was preparing to erase me.

—What happens now?

I asked.

Samuel looked at me.

—Now Adrián has to explain why your signature appeared on documents you never signed.

—And Valeria has to explain why she accepted millions in assets without verifying their origin.

Julia smiled slightly.

—They thought they stole everything.

She closed the folder.

—But every move they made activated another piece of evidence.

I frowned.

—Another piece?

Samuel took out a small envelope.

My father’s handwriting was on it.

My heart stopped.

—He left instructions to open this only if the trust protection was activated.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single letter.

“Isabel,

If you are reading this, it means someone tried to take what belongs to you by force.

Do not blame yourself for trusting.

Trust is not weakness.

The mistake belongs to the person who confused your kindness with helplessness.

Remember something:

A person who betrays you for money will eventually betray the person they betrayed you with.

The truth always collects its debt.”

I read those words twice.

Then I noticed something else.

A second document was attached.

Julia took it first.

Her expression changed immediately.

—No way.

—What?

She looked at Samuel.

—Is this real?

He nodded.

—Yes.

Julia turned the paper toward me.

My eyes fell on the title.

TRANSFER OF CONTROLLING RIGHTS.

I read the name.

Then I froze.

The company that Adrián believed he owned…

The company that he had used to build his reputation…

Had never belonged to him.

Not completely.

Because my father had secretly kept controlling shares under another structure.

And the final beneficiary was not Adrián.

It was me.

Meanwhile, Adrián received another notification.

A second court order.

This time it wasn’t about the assets.

It was about the company.

“Due to evidence of fraudulent transfer attempts and misuse of corporate authority, all management decisions made by Adrián Montero during the investigation period are suspended.”

He read the message again.

Then again.

Valeria approached.

—What does it say?

Adrián looked at her.

And for the first time, there was no tenderness in his eyes.

Only anger.

—You said everything was safe.

Her face changed.

—You were the one who handled the documents.

—Because you told me your lawyer checked everything!

The silence between them became heavy.

The same way they had destroyed my life together…

They were now beginning to destroy each other.

That afternoon, I returned to the house.

The same house where I had been thrown out the night before.

The security guards opened the door.

Not for Adrián.

Not for Valeria.

For me.

I walked through the entrance slowly.

Everything was exactly the same.

The paintings.

The furniture.

The memories.

But I was different.

Adrián appeared at the top of the stairs.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The man who had once promised to protect me was now looking at me like he didn’t recognize me.

—Isabel…

His voice was lower than before.

—Can we talk?

I looked at him.

Three days ago, I would have searched his face for regret.

I would have looked for the husband I loved.

But now…

I only saw the man who signed my destruction.

—About what?

He swallowed.

—About everything.

I smiled faintly.

—Everything?

I walked closer.

—You forged my signature.

—You gave my mother’s necklace to another woman.

—You removed me from my own company.

—You replaced me before you even finished destroying me.

His face turned pale.

—Isabel, I made mistakes.

—No.

I interrupted.

—Mistakes happen accidentally.

I looked directly into his eyes.

—What you did was a choice.

Adrián lowered his head.

For the first time…

He had nothing to say.

Then my phone rang.

Julia.

I answered.

Her voice was serious.

—Isabel, we found something else.

I looked at Adrián.

—What?

A pause.

Then Julia said:

—The forged documents were not created by Valeria.

My expression changed.

—What do you mean?

—Someone helped her.

—Someone inside your company.

The room became silent.

Because suddenly the betrayal was much bigger than I thought.

Valeria had not acted alone.

And the person who helped destroy my life…

Was someone who had been standing beside me for years.
