Part 2: Adrian Finally Learned Why I Ran

Adrian stared at Lucas’s arm around my waist as if it were something he could erase by refusing to look away.

“Your husband?”

“Yes.”

His eyes dropped to my wedding ring again.

Daniel had finally released my wrist.

For the first time since I landed, he had nothing sarcastic to say.

Lucas looked at Adrian calmly.

“I’m Lucas Laurent.”

“I know who you are.”

Adrian’s voice was tight.

Almost everyone in his world knew the Laurent name.

Lucas extended his hand anyway.

Adrian didn’t take it.

Instead, he looked at my son.

“What’s his name?”

Before I could answer, my little boy stepped forward.

“Julian.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“And you’re seven?”

Julian nodded.

Daniel whispered, almost triumphantly:

“See? The timing fits.”

Lucas turned toward him.

“The timing of what?”

Daniel swallowed.

Adrian ignored him.

His eyes remained fixed on Julian.

“When is your birthday?”

I felt Lucas’s hand tighten slightly around mine.

Enough.

“Adrian.”

He looked at me.

“You don’t get to interrogate my son.”

“Then answer me.”

His voice cracked for the first time.

“Is he mine?”

The terminal seemed to go silent around us.

I almost laughed.

Seven years.

Seven years, and Adrian still believed everything revolved around him.

“No.”

He stared at me.

“No?”

“Julian is Lucas’s son.”

Daniel scoffed.

“That’s convenient.”

Lucas reached into his jacket.

For one second Daniel actually stepped backward.

Lucas merely took out his phone.

He opened a photograph and turned it toward Adrian.

It showed me in a hospital bed after Julian’s birth.

Lucas was beside me, younger, exhausted, holding our newborn son against his chest.

The date was visible.

So was the hospital location.

Paris.

Adrian stared at it.

Something in him deflated.

But only for a moment.

Then his anger returned.

“So you left our wedding and married him?”

“No.”

I looked directly at him.

“I left after you humiliated me at our wedding.”

His jaw tightened.

“That is not what happened.”

Lucas glanced at me.

I could have walked away.

Maybe I should have.

But seven years was long enough for Adrian to keep rewriting that day.

“You want to talk about what happened?”

Adrian said nothing.

So I did.

“You disappeared for almost an hour during our reception.”

His face changed.

“Vanessa had a panic attack.”

“You took her into the bridal suite.”

“She needed privacy.”

“And when I opened the door, she was in your arms.”

“She was crying.”

“You called me unreasonable in front of both families.”

“You were screaming.”

“Because my husband had spent our wedding comforting his former girlfriend.”

“We weren’t married yet.”

That sentence made Lucas’s expression go cold.

Adrian realized what he had said too late.

I smiled faintly.

“Exactly.”

He looked away.

That had been the moment I understood I would always come second whenever Vanessa needed him.

But there had been more.

Something Adrian still didn’t know.

“The night before I left, your mother came to my hotel.”

His head snapped back toward me.

“What?”

“She brought Vanessa.”

Adrian froze.

Daniel’s face changed too.

Interesting.

I continued.

“Your mother offered me three million dollars to disappear.”

“I know about the money.”

“No, you know the version she gave you.”

His eyes narrowed.

“She told me you demanded payment.”

I laughed softly.

Of course she had.

“She came to me with the check already written.”

Adrian stared at me.

“Why did you take it?”

“Because I knew refusing would only make her try something else.”

“And then you disappeared.”

“I donated every cent.”

“To what?”

“The elementary school where my grandfather taught.”

Daniel suddenly stopped breathing.

He knew the school.

Adrian did too.

“You donated it?”

“Yes.”

His face had gone pale.

“I can prove it.”

“I don’t need—”

“Yes, you do.”

I pulled out my phone and found the archived receipt.

Three million dollars.

Transfer completed seven years earlier.

Recipient: Monroe Community Education Foundation.

I held the screen in front of him.

Adrian read it twice.

Behind him, Daniel whispered:

“Your mother said Isabella took the money because she wanted a fresh start.”

Lucas gave a humorless laugh.

“What an interesting family.”

Adrian ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The night I left.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“I called you eleven times.”

Adrian’s eyebrows pulled together.

“I never received eleven calls.”

“I sent messages too.”

His expression hardened.

“I never received any messages.”

Now it was my turn to stop.

“What?”

“I checked my phone every day for months after you disappeared.”

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

“Isabella, I hired people to find you.”

My chest tightened.

Daniel had said the same thing earlier.

I had assumed it was another attempt to guilt me.

Adrian continued.

“My mother told me you’d taken the money and gone overseas with another man.”

“Lucas and I didn’t become a couple until almost a year later.”

Adrian looked at Lucas.

Lucas nodded.

“I met Isabella in Lyon after she had already rebuilt her life.”

Silence.

Then Julian tugged my hand.

“Mom, can we go home?”

My heart softened immediately.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at him.

Then at me.

“You’re staying in New York?”

“Temporarily.”

“Why?”

Lucas answered.

“Business.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What business?”

Lucas smiled slightly.

“My company is acquiring a controlling position in North Atlantic Freight.”

Daniel looked horrified.

Adrian went still.

Bennett Holdings had been fighting for that same acquisition for months.

I knew because Lucas had explained it on the flight.

What I had not known was that Bennett Holdings belonged to Adrian now.

Lucas noticed Adrian’s reaction.

“So you’re the Bennett bidder.”

Adrian said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You came here because of the acquisition?”

Lucas nodded.

Then he looked at me.

“My wife has a meeting with the American partners tomorrow.”

Adrian frowned.

“Isabella?”

I almost smiled.

Seven years earlier, the Bennett family had treated me as if I had nothing to offer except embarrassment.

Now Adrian looked genuinely confused that anyone might need me in a billion-dollar negotiation.

Lucas answered for me.

“Isabella leads Laurent Foundation’s North American education investments.”

Daniel stared at me.

“You work for the Laurent family?”

“No.”

I picked up my suitcase.

“I sit on the family board.”

That finally silenced him.

I took Julian’s hand.

“We’re leaving.”

Adrian suddenly stepped forward.

“Wait.”

Lucas moved subtly between us.

Adrian stopped.

His eyes stayed on mine.

“Isabella, if what you said about my mother is true…”

“It is.”

“Then I need to know what else she lied about.”

I should have walked away.

But then Daniel’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face drained instantly.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

Daniel turned the phone toward him.

There was a message from someone saved as Mrs. Bennett.

DON’T LET ISABELLA SPEAK TO HIM ALONE.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

SHE MUST NEVER FIND OUT WHAT VANESSA DID WITH THE WEDDING VIDEO.

I stopped walking.

Adrian slowly raised his eyes to mine.

“The wedding video?”

I felt Lucas turn toward me.

Because there had never been an official wedding video.

At least, that was what the Bennett family had told me seven years ago.

Then Adrian’s phone buzzed.

A file had been sent anonymously.

He opened it.

The thumbnail showed the bridal suite.

Vanessa.

Adrian’s mother.

And me standing just outside the door.

But the timestamp was forty minutes before I remembered arriving.

Adrian pressed play.

Within seconds, his face went white.

Because the video proved Vanessa’s breakdown hadn’t started when I found them together.

It had been planned before the ceremony even began.

And Adrian’s mother was standing beside her, giving instructions.
