Part 2: The Man Adrian Never Wanted Me to Meet

Adrian took the phone from my hand.

Too quickly.

That tiny movement told me more than any explanation could.

“Who is he?” I asked again.

“No one you need to know.”

I smiled.

“But I like him.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

For five years, my husband had barely reacted when other men flirted with me.

Now one joke had turned his face cold.

Interesting.

That evening, while Adrian stayed with Claire, I searched the name attached to the photograph.

Lucas Bennett.

Thirty-four.

Investment attorney.

And, apparently, Adrian’s former best friend.

There was something else.

Three years earlier, Lucas had been a witness at my wedding.

I stared at the screen.

Of course.

I remembered him.

Lucas had stood beside Adrian that day and jokingly warned him:

“If you ever make Emma cry, I’m changing sides.”

I almost laughed.

Maybe it was time to test that promise.

The next morning, I borrowed a nurse’s phone and called him.

“Lucas?”

Silence.

Then:

“Emma?”

“I need a favor.”

“Anything.”

“Come to the hospital.”

He arrived forty minutes later.

When Adrian walked into my room and saw Lucas sitting beside my bed, his expression darkened instantly.

“What are you doing here?”

Lucas leaned back comfortably.

“Visiting Emma.”

I looked between them innocently.

“Brother, you never introduced us.”

Adrian stared at me.

Lucas understood immediately.

Unlike my husband, he knew how to play along.

He smiled.

“So she really doesn’t remember?”

“No,” Adrian said.

Lucas looked at me.

“Then maybe I should introduce myself properly.”

He offered his hand.

“Lucas Bennett. Your brother’s former best friend.”

“Former?”

Lucas glanced at Adrian.

“We disagreed about what a husband owes his wife.”

The room went silent.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Lucas. Outside.”

“No.”

That single word made Adrian freeze.

Lucas pulled an envelope from his coat.

“I came because Emma called me. But I’ve been waiting months to give her this.”

My heartbeat changed.

“What is it?”

Adrian reached for the envelope.

Lucas moved it away.

“Something Claire doesn’t want Emma to see.”

For the first time, I forgot to pretend.

“What does Claire have to do with me?”

Lucas watched my face carefully.

Then he answered:

“More than Adrian has told you.”

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“Enough.”

Lucas ignored him.

“Claire is sick. That part is true.”

He placed the envelope in my hands.

“But she was never Adrian’s wife.”

“I know that,” I almost said.

Instead, I whispered:

“Then why does everyone let her pretend?”

Lucas looked directly at Adrian.

“Because Adrian promised her father something before he died.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Lucas continued.

“He promised that if Claire’s condition became critical, he would give her the life she believed should have been hers.”

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“A fake marriage?”

“A temporary illusion.”

I laughed softly.

Even Lucas looked uncomfortable hearing how absurd it sounded aloud.

Then I opened the envelope.

Inside was something I hadn’t expected.

Divorce paperwork.

Already prepared.

My name.

Adrian’s name.

And a date from six months earlier.

I looked up.

Adrian had gone pale.

“Why were these prepared before my accident?”

He said nothing.

Lucas answered instead.

“Because Claire didn’t want to pretend.”

My smile disappeared.

“She wanted your marriage legally ended.”

I stared at Adrian.

“And you considered it?”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

But Lucas shook his head.

“Tell her everything.”

Adrian looked at me for a long moment.

Then he whispered:

“I refused to sign.”

“Then why hide them?”

“Because I knew what you would think.”

I almost laughed.

He had lied about being my brother.

Introduced another woman as his wife.

And somehow he was worried about what I might think.

Lucas stood.

“Emma, there’s one more page.”

I checked the envelope.

At the bottom was a medical authorization form.

Claire had listed Adrian as her spouse.

But beside the emergency-contact section was another name.

Lucas Bennett.

I frowned.

“Why you?”

Lucas didn’t answer immediately.

Adrian did.

“Because Claire and Lucas were engaged.”

I stared at them.

“What?”

Lucas’s expression became cold.

“Until she disappeared from my life and came back asking Adrian to fulfill a promise made when they were teenagers.”

Suddenly this wasn’t simply a story about my husband and his first love.

There was another betrayal buried underneath it.

And Adrian knew it.

Before I could ask another question, Claire appeared in the doorway.

She had heard everything.

Her pale face twisted when she saw the envelope.

Then her eyes landed on Lucas.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Lucas stood.

“Neither should you.”

Claire ignored him and looked at Adrian.

“Tell Emma to leave.”

Adrian didn’t move.

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“Adrian.”

Still nothing.

Then I smiled and reached for Lucas’s arm.

“Why should I leave? My handsome new friend just arrived.”

Adrian’s eyes snapped toward my hand.

That was when Claire laughed.

Not weakly.

Not sweetly.

She looked straight at me and said:

“Emma, you can stop pretending now.”

My blood went cold.

Adrian turned toward her.

“What did you say?”

Claire smiled.

“She never lost her memory.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Adrian slowly looked at me.

And this time, there was no tenderness in his expression.

Only shock.

“Emma…”

He stepped closer.

“You remember me?”
