Part 2: The Recording Flynn Never Knew Existed

Flynn stared at the ultrasound image.

For the first time since he entered the room, all the arrogance disappeared from his face.

“What is that?”

Dr. Reed did not move.

“Mabel was pregnant.”

The room went completely silent.

Flynn looked at me.

Then back at the image.

“Pregnant?”

His voice cracked.

I had found out only two days before everything happened.

I had planned to tell him over dinner.

I had even bought a tiny gift box and placed the test inside.

Now that box was probably still hidden in the back of my closet.

Dr. Reed continued carefully.

“There were two.”

Flynn gripped the edge of the tray.

“Twins?”

I turned my face toward the window.

I didn’t want to watch him pretend this devastated him more than what he had done to me.

“Mabel…”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“You don’t get to say my name like that.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know.”

“That changes nothing.”

Selina had told him a lie.

And Flynn had believed her without asking a single question.

But that wasn’t even the worst part anymore.

Because I had heard the recording.

Every word.

Selina had not simply manipulated him in the moment.

They had planned something.

Flynn lowered his voice.

“I lost control.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He blinked.

“You said, ‘Just like you told me.’”

His face changed instantly.

That tiny reaction told me everything.

Dr. Reed glanced between us.

“What does that mean?”

Flynn quickly shook his head.

“She’s confused. She just woke up.”

I almost laughed.

Three days earlier, he had believed Selina’s story without evidence.

Now he needed everyone to believe I couldn’t trust my own memory.

Unfortunately for him, I didn’t need memory.

My smartwatch had already uploaded the recording to my phone.

And my phone automatically backed up to the cloud.

I looked toward the door.

“You can come in.”

Flynn turned.

Two detectives entered.

Behind them stood my older brother, Daniel.

Flynn went pale.

“What is this?”

Daniel did not answer him.

He walked directly to me.

His expression softened when he saw that I was awake.

Then he placed my phone on the bedside table.

“I recovered everything.”

Flynn stared at it.

I watched realization spread across his face.

“What did you recover?”

I said nothing.

Daniel tapped the screen.

Flynn’s own voice filled the hospital room.

“She’s gone.”

Then another sentence.

“I did it, Selina. Just like you said.”

Flynn looked as though the floor had vanished beneath him.

The recording continued.

Selina’s voice came next.

Calm.

Far calmer than she had sounded when pretending to cry earlier.

“Then stop standing there. We need to make this look like she attacked you first.”

One detective immediately looked at Flynn.

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then Selina spoke again through the recording.

“And check whether she changed the beneficiary.”

My blood went cold.

I hadn’t heard that part before.

Neither had Daniel.

He paused the recording.

“What beneficiary?”

Flynn stepped backward.

“This is being taken out of context.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“What beneficiary?”

Flynn refused to answer.

One detective did.

“We may already know.”

He opened a folder.

Earlier that morning, investigators had searched the house after reviewing the hospital report.

In Flynn’s office they found copies of my insurance paperwork.

There was also a draft petition concerning control of certain assets I had inherited before our marriage.

I stared at him.

“You were going after my money?”

“No.”

“Then explain it.”

Flynn’s voice rose.

“Selina handled some personal paperwork for me. That doesn’t mean anything.”

Daniel gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Your mistress just happens to manage documents tied to your wife’s death?”

Flynn flinched.

That word.

Death.

Because that was clearly what they had expected.

The detective continued.

“There’s more.”

He slid a photograph onto the tray.

It showed an email printed from Flynn’s office computer.

The sender was Selina.

The subject line:

MABEL — FINAL TIMELINE.

My hands went cold.

Flynn lunged toward the document.

The detective blocked him.

“You need to step back.”

“What timeline?” I asked.

The detective hesitated.

Then answered.

“It appears Ms. Cole and your husband had been discussing your finances for several weeks.”

Flynn shook his head violently.

“No. She was helping me plan a divorce.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why does the email mention her life insurance?”

Flynn stopped talking.

I felt strangely calm.

Maybe because the worst thing had already happened.

I had trusted a man who had shown me exactly how little my life meant to him.

Now I simply wanted the truth.

“Where is Selina?”

The detective’s expression hardened.

“She’s missing.”

Flynn looked up sharply.

That reaction was not fear for her.

It was surprise.

“She left the hospital before officers could locate her,” the detective continued. “Her apartment has been emptied.”

Daniel frowned.

“When?”

“Sometime during the last forty-eight hours.”

I looked at Flynn.

“She abandoned you.”

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t know anything.”

“Then tell us.”

He said nothing.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

Daniel reached for it first.

Then stopped.

His expression changed completely.

“What?”

He turned the screen toward me.

There was a photograph.

Selina.

Standing beside a black car.

Behind her was a man I recognized immediately.

Flynn’s father.

Chairman Richard Vance.

Under the image was one sentence:

FLYNN WAS NEVER THE ONE RUNNING THIS.

I looked toward my husband.

He had gone completely white.

The detective noticed.

“You know what that means?”

Flynn sat down slowly.

For the first time, he looked genuinely terrified.

Then he whispered:

“My father told me Selina was helping us protect the company.”

I stared at him.

“What company?”

Flynn looked at the detectives.

Then at me.

And finally said the sentence that changed everything.

“Vance Global doesn’t belong to my family anymore.”

He swallowed.

“It belongs to you.”
