Adrian came to my office that afternoon.
I knew it was him before he knocked.
“Come in.”
He entered alone.
Seven years had changed him. He looked calmer, harder somehow.
But the moment he saw Noah’s dinosaur backpack beside my desk, all that composure disappeared.
“Is he mine?”
I continued organizing the medical files in front of me.
“Sofia.”
“Yes.”
One word.
That was all it took.
Adrian grabbed the back of the chair as though he needed it to remain standing.
“You knew?”
“Of course I knew.”
“And you never told me?”
I finally looked at him.
“I tried.”
His expression changed.
“What?”
Seven years earlier, after discovering I was pregnant, I had called Adrian seventeen times.
Every call went unanswered.
Then I went to his apartment.
His manager opened the door.
He told me Adrian had already made his choice.
That he was leaving for Los Angeles with actress Claire Monroe and wanted nothing from his old life following him.
I had handed him an envelope anyway.
Inside was my ultrasound.
A letter.
And my new phone number.
“Your manager promised to give it to you.”
Adrian stared at me.
“What manager?”
“Victor Hale.”
His face went completely still.
“Victor never gave me anything.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Convenient.”
“Sofia, Victor died four years ago. I have no reason to protect him.”
Before I could answer, Adrian unlocked his phone.
He found an old photograph.
Victor.
I recognized him immediately.
But standing beside him was someone else.
My stomach dropped.
My father.
“Why was my father with him?”
“That,” Adrian said, “is what I’ve wanted to ask you.”
He explained that seven years ago, days before I disappeared, my father had offered Adrian a huge amount of money to leave me.
Adrian refused.
A week later, someone sent him photographs supposedly showing me boarding a plane with another man.
“I thought you left me.”
I stared at him.
“I thought you chose your career.”
“And I thought you chose someone else.”
Seven years.
We had both spent seven years believing the other had walked away.
Then Adrian said something that made my skin go cold.
“Your father came to see me again after you disappeared.”
“When?”
“Two months later.”
My hand tightened around the desk.
“He told me you were married.”
I stopped breathing.
“He said you never wanted to see me again.”
“That’s a lie.”
“I know that now.”
Silence filled the office.
Then the door opened.
My mother stood there.
She had brought Noah’s jacket.
The moment she saw Adrian, it slipped from her hand.
“Mom?”
Her face went white.
Adrian slowly turned toward her.
“You knew, didn’t you?”
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Mom.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Your father thought he was protecting you.”
“From what?”
She looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
“From the Vale family.”
Adrian frowned.
“My family?”
My mother sat down.
Years ago, before Adrian became famous, his father and mine had been business partners.

Their relationship ended badly.
My father had spent years believing the Vales had destroyed his company.
When Adrian and I fell in love, Dad saw our relationship as history repeating itself.
So he interfered.
Victor had helped him.
The photographs were staged.
My letter was intercepted.
My calls were blocked.
And neither Adrian nor I had known.
I felt sick.
“Does Dad know about Noah?”
Mom began crying harder.
“Yes.”
I stood so quickly the chair moved backward.
“He knew?”
“From the beginning.”
Adrian’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“So he knew I had a son for six years.”
Mom nodded.
Before either of us could speak, Noah appeared in the doorway with a nurse.
He looked much better.
Then he saw Adrian.
His little face brightened with recognition.
“You’re the man from upstairs.”
Adrian crouched instinctively.
“Yes.”
Noah studied him.
Then he looked at me.
“Mom, is he my dad?”
Nobody had told him.
I froze.
“How did you know?”
Noah reached into his backpack and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed Adrian and me together seven years earlier.
I had never seen it before.
“Grandpa gave me this.”
My blood went cold.
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
He turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
When your father finally comes back, ask him why Victor Hale was paid to separate your parents.
Adrian read it twice.
Then his eyes narrowed.
“Yesterday?”
Noah nodded.
“But Grandpa said I couldn’t tell Grandma.”
My mother looked terrified.
Because my father hadn’t disappeared from our lives years ago.
He was still controlling the story.
And somehow, before Adrian and I had even met again—
he already knew Adrian was coming back.
