Part 2: The Wedding Became His Reckoning

When I entered the ballroom alone, three hundred people stood.

Then they realized Adrian wasn’t behind me.

The music stopped.

My father rushed toward me.

“Elena, where is he?”

I walked straight to the microphone.

“Adrian won’t be coming yet.”

Whispers spread across the room.

Victoria appeared near the front table, pale and furious.

She shook her head at me.

A warning.

Don’t say it.

I smiled.

“Apparently, my fiancé had an emergency involving Claire Donovan and her twelve-year-old son, Noah.”

The room went quiet.

“And twenty minutes ago, I learned why Adrian considered that emergency more important than our wedding.”

Victoria stood.

“Elena, stop.”

I looked directly at her.

“Why? Because your guests don’t know Noah is Adrian’s son?”

Chaos.

Adrian’s father dropped his glass.

My mother covered her mouth.

Several relatives turned toward Victoria.

But the strangest reaction came from Adrian’s grandfather.

He didn’t look surprised.

That’s when I understood.

They knew.

Maybe not everyone.

But enough of them.

My phone started ringing.

Adrian.

I declined it.

He called again.

Declined.

Then a message appeared.

DON’T SAY ANOTHER WORD. I’M COMING.

I handed the phone to Camila.

“Save everything.”

Then I faced the guests again.

“There will be no wedding today.”

Victoria marched toward me.

“You’re destroying Adrian’s reputation because you’re emotional.”

“No. Adrian destroyed our relationship. I’m simply refusing to hide it.”

“You don’t understand what happened twelve years ago.”

“Then explain.”

She froze.

And suddenly a man’s voice came from behind us.

“I can.”

Adrian’s father, Richard, stood.

Victoria’s face changed instantly.

“Richard.”

He ignored her.

“Noah’s existence wasn’t hidden only from Elena.”

The room became silent again.

Richard looked at me.

“I found out three years ago.”

My stomach tightened.

Three years.

Exactly when Adrian had asked me to move in with him.

“Adrian knew before that?” I asked.

Richard nodded.

“He’s known since Noah was four.”

Eight years.

Adrian had known for eight years.

He had dated me for six.

My phone rang again.

This time I answered.

“What?”

“Elena, what the hell are you doing?”

Adrian sounded breathless.

Behind him I heard voices and movement.

“Is Noah safe?”

A pause.

“Yes. Paramedics are here.”

Relief passed through me.

Whatever Adrian had done, Noah was a child caught inside adults’ lies.

“Good.”

“Elena, listen to me. I’m coming back. We can delay the ceremony two hours.”

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“There is no ceremony.”

Silence.

Then his voice hardened.

“You’re overreacting.”

“Did you know Noah was your son?”

Another silence.

That one lasted longer.

“Elena—”

“Yes or no?”

“Yes.”

One word erased six years.

“Since he was four?”

Adrian said nothing.

I closed my eyes.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For finally answering one question honestly.”

I ended the call.

But before I could put my phone down, Camila touched my shoulder.

“Elena.”

She was staring toward the ballroom entrance.

Claire was there.

Adrian stood beside her.

And between them was Noah.

The boy looked exhausted and frightened.

The moment I saw him, my anger shifted.

This wasn’t his scandal.

I stepped away from the microphone.

Adrian immediately walked toward me.

“What did you tell everyone?”

“The truth.”

“You had no right to expose Noah!”

“I never said anything about him beyond what your own family confirmed.”

Claire suddenly spoke.

“Elena, please. Noah has been through enough.”

I looked at her.

“I agree.”

She seemed surprised.

“So take him somewhere quiet. He shouldn’t be standing in the middle of this.”

Claire’s expression faltered.

Adrian, however, grabbed my arm.

“We need to talk privately.”

I pulled away.

“We had six years to talk privately.”

Then Noah said something.

Quietly.

But loud enough for all of us to hear.

“Dad, is she the woman you were supposed to marry?”

Adrian froze.

Dad.

Not Adrian.

Not Mr. Blake.

Dad.

Noah had always known.

I looked at Adrian.

Then Claire.

“How long has Noah known?”

Claire lowered her eyes.

Adrian answered.

“Four years.”

My chest tightened.

Four years of birthdays.

Four years of secret visits.

Four years of family gatherings I had apparently never been invited to.

And suddenly dozens of strange memories rearranged themselves.

Business trips.

Canceled weekends.

Emergency calls from Claire.

Christmas Eve three years ago, when Adrian disappeared for five hours because a “client” needed him.

I finally understood where he had been.

But Camila suddenly stepped beside me.

“Elena, there’s something else.”

She held out her phone.

“What?”

“While you were speaking, someone sent this to me.”

It was an email from an unknown address.

One attachment.

A scanned document.

I opened it.

At first I didn’t understand what I was seeing.

Then I saw the date.

Six years earlier.

Three months before Adrian and I started dating.

It was a custody agreement.

Adrian Blake acknowledged paternity of Noah Donovan.

But underneath was another clause.

A financial settlement between Adrian and Claire.

And one sentence had been highlighted:

The parties agree that any future marriage entered into by Adrian Blake shall not affect the inheritance arrangement established for their son.

I slowly raised my head.

“Inheritance?”

Adrian went pale.

Claire whispered:

“Who sent you that?”

That reaction told me the document was real.

Richard stepped closer.

“What inheritance arrangement?”

This time Victoria looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

Adrian turned toward his mother.

“Mom?”

Nobody moved.

Then my father, who had been silent the entire time, took the phone from my hand.

He read the document.

His face changed.

“Elena…”

“What?”

He looked at Adrian.

Then at Victoria.

And finally at me.

“This isn’t only about Noah.”

My stomach dropped.

My father pointed toward another paragraph farther down the page.

I read it.

Once.

Twice.

Then a third time.

The agreement referenced a trust established by my grandfather.

My grandfather.

Not Adrian’s family.

Mine.

I looked at my father.

“Why is our family trust mentioned in an agreement between Adrian and Claire?”

He didn’t answer.

Victoria backed away.

And suddenly I understood the expression on her face.

She hadn’t been afraid that I would discover Adrian had a son.

She had been afraid I would discover why Adrian had been so determined to marry me.

I turned toward the man who, less than an hour earlier, had ordered me to keep our wedding “on track.”

“Adrian.”

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

“Did you ever actually intend to marry me because you loved me?”

His silence lasted only a few seconds.

But this time, three hundred witnesses heard the answer.
