Part 2: The File Daniel Never Knew Existed.

The courtroom doors opened at exactly ten.

Daniel squeezed Olivia’s hand before walking inside.

I noticed.

I also noticed my attorney place a thick blue folder on the table.

Daniel noticed that too.

“What’s in there?” he whispered.

I smiled.

“You’ll find out.”

The hearing began quietly. Daniel agreed to the divorce terms with almost insulting speed. He wanted freedom, Olivia, and the life he believed was waiting for him.

Then the judge reached the financial settlement.

Daniel’s attorney stood.

“My client maintains that the majority of the marital assets originated from Carter Development Group and should remain under his control.”

That was the sentence I had been waiting for.

My attorney opened the blue folder.

“Your Honor, we have documents that materially affect that claim.”

Daniel turned toward me.

“What documents?”

My attorney placed several records before the judge.

For years, Daniel had introduced himself as the driving force behind Carter Development Group.

He wasn’t.

The company had originally belonged to my grandfather.

When he died, ownership passed through a family trust.

And six months before Daniel began his affair, controlling interest had quietly transferred to me.

Daniel had been running a company he thought would eventually become his.

He had never owned it.

His face slowly lost its color.

“This is impossible.”

My attorney continued.

There was more.

During the months Daniel had been seeing Olivia, he had used company funds for hotel rooms, luxury dinners, gifts, and the apartment where I had seen her.

Every transaction had been documented.

Daniel stared at me.

“You knew?”

“For months.”

“And you said nothing?”

“I wanted to know how far you’d go.”

Olivia pulled her hand away from his.

“How much of the company do you actually own?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because now he understood the answer.

Almost nothing.

The judge called for a brief recess while the attorneys reviewed the documents.

In the hallway, Daniel followed me.

“Emma, wait.”

I kept walking.

He grabbed my attention with the one subject he believed could still control me.

“What about our baby?”

I stopped.

There it was.

The final secret.

I turned around.

“My attorney advised me not to discuss that until today.”

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

I reached into my bag and removed another envelope.

Eight months earlier, during an ordinary prenatal appointment, a discrepancy had appeared in my medical records.

At first, I assumed it was a clerical mistake.

Then my doctor recommended additional testing.

I had repeated it privately.

Twice.

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“What testing?”

Before I could answer, Olivia suddenly spoke behind him.

“Daniel…”

Her voice sounded terrified.

We both turned.

She was staring at the name of the laboratory printed across the envelope.

And somehow, she recognized it.

That was when I realized my secret wasn’t the only secret in that courthouse.

Olivia had one too.

My attorney stepped beside me.

“Emma, don’t say anything else yet.”

Daniel looked between the three of us.

“What is going on?”

Olivia backed away.

“Nothing.”

But Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Why do you know that laboratory?”

She wouldn’t answer.

Then my attorney quietly handed me his phone.

A message had just arrived from our investigator.

There was a photograph attached.

I enlarged it.

And my stomach dropped.

Olivia.

The same laboratory.

Three months earlier.

Daniel saw my expression.

“What?”

I turned the screen toward him.

His face changed instantly.

Because beneath Olivia’s photograph was a copy of an appointment record.

And beside the word PATERNITY, there was a name.

Not Daniel Carter.

Another man.

Daniel slowly turned toward the woman he had just destroyed his marriage to marry.

“Olivia…”

She stepped backward.

“Daniel, I can explain.”

But before she could say another word, the courtroom clerk opened the doors.

“The judge is ready for everyone to return.”

I picked up my blue folder.

Daniel remained frozen in the hallway.

He had entered that courthouse believing he was leaving one pregnant woman to begin a perfect life with another.

Now he was about to discover that the divorce wasn’t the biggest surprise waiting for him.

And neither was my baby.
