Part 2: The Folder Daniel Never Wanted Me to See

At 8:17 that morning, Theresa wasn’t calling to apologize.

She was calling because the mortgage payment had failed.

“What did you do?” she demanded the moment I answered.

I calmly closed my laptop.

“I stopped paying bills that aren’t mine.”

There was silence.

Then her voice rose.

“You can’t just abandon this family! The bank contacted me this morning!”

“Theresa, whose name is on the mortgage?”

“Mine, but—”

“Then I suggest you pay it.”

She started shouting about loyalty, marriage, and everything she had supposedly done for me.

Not once did she mention the empty plate.

Then Daniel grabbed the phone.

“Mariana, stop this. Mom is panicking.”

I almost laughed.

Two nights earlier, I had been humiliated in front of everyone, and he had told me not to make a scene.

Now his mother received one warning from the bank, and suddenly her feelings mattered.

“I’m not stopping anything,” I said. “I’m simply no longer financing it.”

“You’re my wife.”

“And you were my husband when your mother told me I wasn’t worth feeding.”

Daniel went quiet.

Then he said something that confirmed I had made the right decision.

“Can’t you just turn the payments back on until we figure this out?”

Not I’m sorry.

Not Come home.

Just turn the money back on.

“No.”

I ended the call.

By lunchtime, Aaron had called four times.

Lauren sent me a message accusing me of “financially abusing the family.”

I deleted it without replying.

But that afternoon, something happened I hadn’t expected.

Robert, my accountant, called.

“Mariana, I think you need to come to my office.”

His voice sounded different.

Serious.

“What happened?”

“I found something while separating Daniel’s accounts from yours.”

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting across from him.

A thick folder rested between us.

Robert pushed it toward me.

“I went back three years.”

Inside were bank statements, credit card records, transfers, and loan documents.

At first, nothing made sense.

Then I began recognizing the charges.

Restaurants.

Luxury hotels.

Designer stores.

Expensive electronics.

But they weren’t mine.

Robert pointed to several recurring transfers.

“Look at the recipient.”

L. Carter.

Lauren Carter.

My stomach tightened.

Every month, money had been leaving Daniel’s account and going directly to Lauren.

Sometimes $800.

Sometimes $1,500.

Once, nearly $6,000.

“There’s more,” Robert said.

He turned another page.

Aaron had opened two personal loans.

Theresa had co-signed both.

And somehow, Daniel had been making the payments.

With money transferred from our joint account.

The same account I had been constantly replenishing.

I stared at Robert.

“How much?”

He hesitated.

“Over three years? More than $140,000.”

I felt strangely calm.

The family hadn’t been struggling.

They had been spending.

And I had been quietly filling the hole.

Then Robert pulled out one final document.

“This is the part that concerns me.”

It was a refinancing application for Theresa’s house.

Submitted six weeks earlier.

I scanned the pages.

Then I froze.

My income was listed as financial support.

My assets were listed.

Even my condo appeared in the supporting documents.

“I never approved this.”

“I know.”

At the bottom was a signature.

Mariana Reyes.

It looked almost exactly like mine.

Almost.

But I hadn’t signed it.

Someone had forged my signature.

Before I could say anything, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I declined it.

He called again.

Then a text appeared.

We need to talk before Mom does something stupid. Please come to the house tonight.

Robert looked at the message.

“Are you going?”

I closed the folder.

“Yes.”

That evening, I walked into Theresa’s house carrying the documents under my arm.

Everyone was waiting.

Theresa.

Aaron.

Lauren.

And Daniel.

The extravagant dining table from two nights earlier was completely empty.

Theresa stood first.

“You’ve embarrassed this family enough.”

I placed the folder on the table.

“No, Theresa.”

Daniel’s face changed the second he saw it.

That was when I knew.

He recognized the folder.

I slowly opened it to the forged refinancing application.

“I think we should talk about who has really been embarrassing this family.”

Lauren stopped smiling.

Aaron looked at Daniel.

Theresa went pale.

But Daniel whispered only three words.

“Where’d you get that?”

I stared at my husband.

Not What is that?

Not Who did this?

He already knew.

I slid the document toward him.

“You have thirty seconds to explain why my signature is on a loan application I’ve never seen.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, Theresa suddenly reached for the folder.

I pulled it away.

And then Lauren stood up.

Her chair scraped violently against the floor.

“Daniel,” she said, her voice shaking, “tell her the truth before I do.”

The entire room went silent.

I looked from Lauren to my husband.

Daniel’s face had lost all color.

Because whatever was hidden inside that folder wasn’t only about money.

And judging by the way Lauren was staring at him, I was about to discover why my husband had been secretly sending thousands of dollars to his brother’s wife.
