PART 2: THE LAPTOP THAT COULD DESTROY THE VANCE FAMILY EMPIRE

I thought canceling Tessa Vance’s credit card would be the most satisfying thing I did that day.

I was wrong.

Because by midnight, I discovered the divorce wasn’t the end of my battle with the Vance family.

It was the beginning.

The first sign that something was wrong came when my security system sent me an alert.

Someone was trying to open my front door.

At first, I thought it was a mistake.

Then my phone showed me the camera footage.

Julian.

My ex-husband.

Standing outside my house.

At midnight.

For a few seconds, I just stared at the screen.

The man who had barely looked at me during our final divorce hearing was now standing at my door like his life depended on getting inside.

My first instinct was anger.

My second was fear.

Because Julian wasn’t supposed to have access anymore.

I had changed the locks.

Changed the passwords.

Changed everything.

Then he started knocking.

“Evelyn, open the door.”

His voice was low.

Almost desperate.

I didn’t answer.

“Evelyn, I know you’re inside.”

I remained silent.

Then his tone changed.

The calm businessman disappeared.

“Please.”

That word shocked me more than anything.

Julian Vance never begged.

Not for anything.

I stepped away from the camera.

“Why are you here?”

A few seconds passed.

Then he answered:

“I need something from the house.”

I almost laughed.

“Your belongings were sent to your mother’s place last week.”

“It’s not about my belongings.”

That sentence made my instincts immediately wake up.

“What is it about?”

Silence.

Too long.

Too careful.

Then he said:

“The laptop.”

My heart stopped.

My laptop.

Not his.

Mine.

The one I had used for years.

The one he never cared about because he thought it only contained my work files.

But Julian didn’t know what was inside.

Or maybe…

he knew exactly what was inside.

I moved closer to the security panel.

“Why do you need my laptop?”

His answer came immediately.

“Because there are files on it that belong to my family.”

I smiled.

So there it was.

The truth.

Not an excuse.

Not a mistake.

A confession.

“Julian, my laptop belongs to me.”

His voice became colder.

“Evelyn, don’t make this difficult.”

I looked at the camera.

The same man who spent seven years making decisions for me was now trying to intimidate me.

But he forgot something.

I was no longer his wife.

I was someone who had nothing left to lose.

“I think you should leave.”

The silence afterward felt heavy.

Then he whispered:

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

I looked at the screen.

“Actually, Julian.”

“I finally do.”

He walked away a few minutes later.

But I knew he wouldn’t give up.

So I went straight to my office.

The laptop was sitting on my desk.

I opened it carefully.

For years, I had used it for my consulting business.

But six months before the divorce, I noticed something strange.

Files appearing.

Documents being renamed.

Emails disappearing.

At the time, I assumed it was a technical problem.

Now…

I wasn’t so sure.

I searched through the hidden folders.

And found something I had completely forgotten about.

A backup folder.

Created automatically.

Inside were thousands of files.

Financial records.

Emails.

Contracts.

Donation reports.

At first, I didn’t understand.

Then I saw the name.

“The Vance Foundation.”

Julian’s family’s famous charity organization.

The same charity that had won awards.

The same charity that appeared on television.

The same charity people donated millions of dollars to every year.

I clicked the first document.

My hands started shaking.

Because the numbers didn’t match.

The money coming in was enormous.

But the money going to actual charity programs was a fraction of that.

The rest…

had been transferred through multiple companies.

Companies connected to the Vance family.

I kept opening files.

Each one was worse than the last.

Then I found an email.

From Tessa.

The subject line made my blood run cold.

“Cleaning the accounts before the audit.”

I read the message once.

Then again.

Because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

They weren’t just hiding money.

They knew an investigation was coming.

And they were preparing to destroy evidence.

My divorce wasn’t the reason Julian came to my house.

The credit card cancellation wasn’t what scared him.

It was this laptop.

This evidence.

This proof.

The woman they spent years treating like a convenient tool had accidentally become the person holding the thing that could destroy everything they built.

The next morning, I called the only person I trusted.

My attorney.

When he arrived, he looked through the files silently for almost an hour.

Finally, he closed the laptop.

“Evelyn.”

His expression was serious.

“You understand what this means, right?”

I nodded.

“The Vance family could lose everything.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“They could go to prison.”

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice came through.

Tessa Vance.

“Evelyn.”

Her tone was no longer arrogant.

It was careful.

“Where is the laptop?”

I didn’t answer.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because if you opened those files…”

“You should know Julian wasn’t the only person who came after them.”

I looked toward the window.

And suddenly realized something.

The divorce had not freed me from the Vance family.

It had placed me directly in the middle of their biggest secret.
