Part 2: The Recording That Destroyed His World

Six months after I disappeared, Ethan Blackwood finally heard the recording.

By then, I was living under my maiden name in another city, attending therapy twice a week and learning how to use my hands again.

Some mornings, I could hold a pencil for ten minutes.

Other mornings, I couldn’t button my own shirt.

But I was alive.

And Ethan no longer controlled a single part of my life.

The recording reached him through my attorney.

It was only seven minutes long.

Seven minutes that destroyed everything he believed about Rachel.

Her voice came first.

Calm. Amused.

“You should have seen Isabella’s face when Ethan believed me.”

Another woman laughed.

Rachel continued.

“I barely had to do anything. I scratched her arm, made myself fall, and started crying. Ethan did the rest.”

There was silence on the recording.

Then Rachel said the sentence Ethan would never forget.

“He loves feeling like my protector. All I have to do is look frightened, and he stops thinking.”

According to Ethan’s assistant, he listened to that part four times.

Then he called Rachel.

She denied everything.

She claimed the recording was edited.

So Ethan did what he should have done before destroying our marriage.

He investigated.

The security system near the family altar had supposedly malfunctioned that morning.

It hadn’t.

Someone had manually deleted the footage.

That person was Rachel.

Unfortunately for her, a backup had been automatically uploaded to an external server.

The video showed everything.

Rachel grabbing me.

Rachel scratching my arm.

Rachel checking the hallway before deliberately throwing herself down.

And me standing several feet away when Ethan entered.

Ethan watched the footage without moving.

Then he asked his security chief one question.

“Why didn’t anyone show me this?”

The man stared at him.

“You never asked.”

Those three words apparently broke something inside him.

Because Ethan finally understood the truth.

Rachel had lied.

But he had chosen what happened afterward.

No lie had forced him to condemn me without listening.

No lie had forced him to ignore my injuries.

And no lie could erase the fact that when I begged him to believe me, he walked away.

Three days later, Ethan appeared outside my rehabilitation clinic.

I saw him through the glass doors.

He looked nothing like the man I remembered.

No perfect suit.

No arrogant expression.

He simply stood there holding our divorce papers.

I almost turned around.

Then I realized something.

I wasn’t afraid of him anymore.

I walked outside.

“Isabella.”

His voice cracked.

I said nothing.

“I know everything.”

“Congratulations.”

He flinched.

“I was wrong.”

“No, Ethan. You were cruel.”

His face went pale.

He looked at my hands.

I immediately put them behind my back.

He had lost the right to look at them.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life making this right,” he whispered.

“You can’t.”

“I can get you the best specialists. Whatever treatment you need—”

“I already have specialists.”

“I’ll pay for everything.”

“I don’t need your money.”

“Then tell me what you need.”

For the first time, I smiled.

“I need you to sign.”

I held out the divorce papers.

His fingers tightened around them.

“Isabella…”

“Sign them.”

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then he finally understood.

There was no apology big enough to restore what he had destroyed.

His hand trembled as he signed.

I took the papers and turned away.

But Ethan called after me.

“Rachel is going to be arrested.”

I stopped.

Not because I cared about Rachel.

Because his next words surprised me.

“And I’m turning myself in too.”

I slowly looked back.

Ethan swallowed.

“What I did to you wasn’t justice. It was a crime.”

For once, I had nothing to say.

So I left.

Two months later, Rachel’s carefully constructed image collapsed when investigators uncovered more evidence, including financial transfers and messages proving she had manipulated several members of the Blackwood family.

But there was one discovery nobody expected.

Thomas Blackwood’s accident.

The accident that had made Rachel a widow.

Investigators found inconsistencies in the original report.

Suddenly, Rachel wasn’t only being questioned about what she had done to me.

She was being questioned about what had happened to her husband.

Then, one rainy evening, my attorney called.

“Isabella, there’s something you need to see.”

He sent me a photograph recovered from Thomas’s private files.

I opened it.

And froze.

Thomas was standing beside Rachel.

But Rachel wasn’t the person who caught my attention.

It was the man beside her.

A man I recognized immediately.

One of the four men Ethan had brought into my hospital room.

I called my attorney back.

“What does this mean?”

His answer made my blood run cold.

“We don’t know yet. But Thomas apparently knew him too.”

I stared at the photograph.

For months, I had believed Rachel’s lie had started at the family altar.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

Because written across the back of Thomas’s photograph were six words:

If something happens, investigate Rachel first.

And suddenly, my story wasn’t ending with a divorce.

It was only beginning.
