Part 2: The Teacher Knew My Husband Before I Did

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

—Luke went to your house?

Rebecca nodded.

—Around nine.

That was impossible.

At nine the previous night, Luke had told me he was going to the pharmacy.

I turned toward him.

He was already walking toward us.

Kayla followed.

—Lori —Luke said quickly—, let me explain.

Rebecca stepped backward.

I looked at my husband.

—Why were you at Ethan’s teacher’s house?

Luke rubbed his forehead.

—Because Mom called me after your argument.

I looked at Kayla.

—Why?

Kayla’s face had gone pale.

Rebecca finally spoke.

—Because I wasn’t supposed to be Ethan’s teacher.

That confused me even more.

—What does that mean?

Rebecca swallowed.

—Kayla asked me weeks ago to transfer to another class.

I stared at my mother-in-law.

—You tried to remove my son’s teacher before he even started school?

—Lori, please—

—Why?

Nobody answered.

Then Rebecca said quietly:

—Because Luke and I knew each other years ago.

My stomach dropped.

Luke immediately interrupted.

—Before you and I met.

I looked at Rebecca.

—How well?

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Luke did.

—We were engaged.

The schoolyard seemed to disappear around me.

—Engaged?

—For less than a year. It ended long before I met you.

I turned toward Kayla.

Suddenly her behavior made sense.

The objections.

The strange looks toward Luke.

Her desperation to change Ethan’s school.

But something still didn’t fit.

—If that’s all this is, why didn’t anyone simply tell me?

Rebecca’s eyes filled with discomfort.

—Because that’s not everything.

Luke closed his eyes.

—Rebecca.

—She deserves to know.

Kayla stepped between us.

—Not here.

I laughed.

—You came here after I specifically told you not to. Now you’re worried about where we have this conversation?

Rebecca looked directly at me.

—Last month, when I received Ethan’s enrollment information, I recognized Luke’s name.

She paused.

—Then I saw Ethan’s date of birth.

Luke went completely still.

I noticed.

—What about his birthday?

Rebecca didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old envelope.

—Luke came to my house last night because Kayla told him I still had this.

Inside was a photograph.

Luke.

Rebecca.

And Kayla.

Taken almost eight years earlier.

Rebecca was visibly pregnant.

I couldn’t breathe.

—You had a baby?

Rebecca nodded.

—A boy.

I looked at Luke.

—Where is he?

Rebecca’s voice broke.

—He died shortly after birth.

I looked away for a moment.

Whatever I felt about Luke, I wasn’t going to turn that loss into an accusation.

But Rebecca continued.

—Afterward, Luke and I separated. I moved away. I became a teacher. I didn’t see his family again until recently.

—Then why does Ethan matter?

Rebecca handed me something else.

A photocopy of an old hospital document.

Two names had been highlighted.

Luke Carter.

Kayla Carter.

Then another name.

Dr. Benjamin Carter.

Luke’s father.

I frowned.

—What am I looking at?

Rebecca answered carefully.

—Your husband told you his father died before Ethan was born, right?

—Yes.

Luke whispered:

—Lori…

Rebecca shook her head.

—Benjamin Carter was alive for almost three years after Ethan was born.

I turned toward my husband.

—What?

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

That was the moment I realized Rebecca wasn’t the secret Kayla had been trying to keep away from Ethan’s school.

The secret was something much older.

And much closer to my son.

Luke finally said:

—My father didn’t die when I told you he did.

—Why would you lie about that?

Kayla began crying.

—Because Benjamin knew about Ethan.

I stared at her.

—Of course he knew about Ethan. He was his grandfather.

Kayla shook her head.

—That’s not what I mean.

Then Rebecca took one final document from the envelope.

It was a letter written by Luke’s father.

The date was six years ago.

The first line contained my son’s full name.

“Regarding Ethan Carter’s parentage…”

My hands started shaking.

I looked at Luke.

—What did your father know?

Luke didn’t answer.

Kayla did.

—That’s why I didn’t want Ethan attending this school.

I looked from her to Rebecca.

And suddenly understood.

—You weren’t afraid Rebecca would see Luke again.

Kayla lowered her eyes.

—You were afraid she’d see Ethan.

Nobody spoke.

Then Rebecca whispered:

—Because the first time I saw your son’s enrollment photograph, Lori…

She looked at Luke.

Then back at me.

—I recognized the face immediately.

—Whose face?

Rebecca’s answer left Luke completely motionless.

—Luke’s father.
