PART 2: MY DAUGHTER STOPPED WAITING FOR HER FATHER, AND THAT WAS WHEN HE FINALLY BROKE

Nathan stood in the middle of the living room.

The broken pieces of Mia’s castle were still lying on the floor.

For years, he had always believed that no matter what happened, Mia would run into his arms.

That little girl who used to wait by the door every night.

The little girl who kept his pictures beside her bed.

The little girl who cried whenever he left for a business trip.

But now…

She only looked at him like he was a stranger.

“Mia…”

His voice softened.

“Dad didn’t mean to hurt you.”

Mia looked at him quietly.

Then she shook her head.

“You don’t have to explain, uncle.”

Those three words hit him harder than any accusation.

Nathan froze.

“Stop calling me that.”

Mia held my hand tighter.

“But that’s what mom taught me.”

Nathan looked at me with disbelief.

“You really taught her to call me uncle?”

I didn’t avoid his eyes.

“Yes.”

His expression became angry.

“How could you do that to your own daughter?”

I smiled sadly.

“How could I not?”

“Every time you left her behind for Emily and Alex, what was I supposed to tell her?”

“That her father was busy?”

“That he loved her but had no time for her?”

“That she should keep waiting?”

Nathan opened his mouth.

But no words came out.

Because he knew.

Mia had waited.

She waited at the dinner table.

She waited at school events.

She waited every night by the window when she heard a car outside.

And every time…

It wasn’t him.

The next morning, I placed the divorce papers on the table.

Nathan stared at them for a long time.

“You already prepared this?”

I nodded.

“The thirty days are over.”

His fingers tightened around the documents.

“Laura, are you really going to leave?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

His eyes showed a small hope.

Then I continued:

“Mia and I already left a long time ago.”

That sentence destroyed the last bit of confidence on his face.

Because he finally understood.

The divorce was not the reason he was losing us.

The divorce was only the document proving what had already happened.

At that moment, his phone rang.

Emily.

Again.

Nathan looked at the screen.

For years, he would immediately answer.

But this time…

He didn’t.

The phone continued vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Mia watched him silently.

Then she said:

“You should answer.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You don’t care anymore?”

Mia lowered her eyes.

“No.”

A six-year-old child saying that should never sound so calm.

Nathan sat down slowly.

“When did you stop needing me?”

Mia thought for a moment.

Then she answered:

“When I realized you were already someone’s dad.”

Nathan’s eyes turned red.

“No, Mia. That’s not true.”

“You’re my daughter.”

“Then why did you always leave me?”

He couldn’t answer.

Because there was no excuse big enough.

No explanation could erase all those moments.

The kindergarten events.

The nights she had a fever.

The birthdays where she waited for him to come home.

The little drawings where she always included three people.

Until one day…

She stopped drawing him.

Nathan reached for her hand.

But Mia stepped back.

That small movement hurt him more than anything.

Because he finally felt what I had felt for months.

Being rejected by someone you love.

That afternoon, Nathan went to Emily’s house.

For the first time, he didn’t go because she needed him.

He went because he needed answers.

Emily opened the door with surprise.

“Nathan?”

He looked around.

There were pictures everywhere.

Alex’s drawings.

Alex’s toys.

Alex’s school awards.

Everything was about Alex.

Then he saw something on the table.

A family photo.

Emily.

Alex.

And him.

Taken three months earlier.

A photo Mia had asked him to take at the park.

But he had refused because Emily said Alex needed him more that day.

Nathan stared at the picture.

For the first time, he saw the truth.

He had spent years trying to be a father to someone else’s child…

while slowly becoming a stranger to his own.

Emily noticed his expression.

“Nathan, what’s wrong?”

He looked at her.

“Did you ever think about Mia?”

Emily became silent.

“Of course I did.”

“No.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You thought about what Mia could give Alex.”

Emily’s face changed.

“What are you saying?”

“I missed my daughter’s childhood because you kept needing me.”

The room became quiet.

Then Emily’s expression hardened.

“So now I’m the problem?”

Nathan didn’t answer.

Because deep inside…

He already knew.

The problem wasn’t only Emily.

The problem was him.

He was the one who made choices.

He was the one who kept leaving.

He was the one who believed Laura would always wait.

That night, Nathan returned home.

But the house was different.

The lights were off.

Mia’s room was empty.

Her toys were gone.

Only one thing remained on the bed.

A small drawing.

Nathan picked it up with shaking hands.

It was a picture of three people.

A mother.

A little girl.

And a man standing far away.

Above him was one word.

“Uncle.”

Nathan collapsed onto the chair.

Because for the first time…

he understood something too late.

A child does not stop loving a parent in one day.

They stop waiting.

Little by little.

Silently.

Until one day…

the person they loved becomes someone they no longer recognize.

And tomorrow morning, when Nathan opened the envelope left by Laura…

he would discover the secret she had hidden for six years.

The reason she had never fought Emily.

The reason she had always stayed silent.

Because the truth about Mia’s birth…

was something Nathan had never been prepared to hear.
