PART 2: MY EX-HUSBAND FINALLY DISCOVERED WHO HAD BEEN PAYING FOR HIS FAMILY

The next morning, Adrian arrived at my apartment.

Not with anger.

Not with arrogance.

But with panic.

I had never seen that expression on his face before.

The man who once told me that I would regret leaving him was now standing outside my door, looking like someone who had lost everything.

“Elena.”

I didn’t invite him in.

“What do you want?”

He lowered his voice.

“Why did you tell Vanessa you won’t transfer the money anymore?”

I looked at him for a few seconds.

Then I laughed.

“That’s why you came?”

“Not because we just divorced?”

“Not because you lost your wife?”

“But because you lost the money.”

His face changed.

“That’s not fair.”

“Fair?”

I repeated his word.

“Adrian, do you know how many times I heard that word during our marriage?”

“Every time your sister wanted something.”

“Every time Hannah needed something.”

“Every time your family spent my salary.”

“You always said: We are family.”

I stepped aside and took out a folder.

“Since you like talking about family, let’s review our family expenses.”

I placed the documents on the table.

Adrian looked confused.

“What is this?”

“Your family’s expenses.”

His fingers slowly opened the folder.

The first page.

English course.

The second page.

Private tutoring.

The third page.

Summer camp.

Then phones.

Tablets.

Clothes.

Medical expenses.

Vacations.

Hundreds of transfers.

Thousands of dollars.

His face became darker with every page.

“You kept records?”

“Yes.”

“Because every time I asked you where my money went, you said I was being selfish.”

“I needed proof.”

Adrian turned the pages faster.

Then he stopped.

His expression froze.

“What is this?”

I looked at him.

“The mortgage payments.”

He stared at the document.

“These payments…”

“Where did they go?”

I smiled.

“That’s what I wanted to know too.”

For three years, I thought we were building our home.

I thought every month we were getting closer to owning our apartment.

But according to the bank records…

Several payments had been delayed.

Some money had been transferred somewhere else.

And the person who had access to our account…

was Adrian.

He looked terrified.

“Elena, I can explain.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You can explain to yourself.”

“I spent three years trusting you.”

“Three years believing your family needed help.”

“But the truth is…”

I looked straight into his eyes.

“Your family didn’t need my help.”

“They needed my salary.”

Adrian sat down slowly.

For the first time, he had no excuse.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He looked at the screen.

He didn’t answer.

It rang again.

And again.

Finally, he picked up.

“What happened?”

I could hear Vanessa’s voice even from where I stood.

She sounded nervous.

“Adrian, the academy called.”

“They said Hannah’s course payment failed.”

“The teacher said she can’t continue if we don’t pay.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then he looked at me.

“Elena…”

I interrupted him.

“No.”

“Don’t say my name when you need money.”

His expression became painful.

“But Hannah has an exam.”

I nodded.

“Then her mother can pay.”

“Or you can.”

“Or maybe your family can finally support each other.”

He remained silent.

Because for years, everyone had supported themselves with one person’s sacrifice.

Mine.

That afternoon, something unexpected happened.

Hannah came to my apartment.

She stood outside holding a notebook.

When she saw me, her eyes became red.

“Aunt Elena…”

I looked at her.

She was not the person who hurt me.

She was just a child caught in the middle of adults’ choices.

“Come in.”

She sat on the sofa.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Finally she whispered:

“Is it true?”

“What?”

“That you don’t want to help me anymore?”

I looked at her carefully.

“Hannah, do you know how much I helped you?”

She lowered her head.

“Mom said you didn’t mind because you were family.”

I smiled sadly.

“That’s what everyone said.”

“Family.”

“But nobody asked if I was tired.”

Hannah started crying.

“I thought you liked helping me.”

That sentence hurt.

Because I realized something.

She didn’t understand either.

She had been taught to receive.

Not to appreciate.

I handed her the notebook she brought.

“Study hard.”

She looked surprised.

“You’re still helping me?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I’m giving you one last lesson.”

“Never let anyone convince you that another person’s sacrifice is something you automatically deserve.”

Hannah cried harder.

And for the first time…

she understood.

That night, Adrian sent me a message.

Only one sentence.

“I didn’t know you were this important.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I replied:

“You knew.”

“You just thought I would never leave.”

The next morning, the Cole family group chat exploded.

Vanessa had discovered something.

The apartment they lived in…

The car Adrian drove…

Even Hannah’s expensive courses…

Many things had been paid with money they never knew existed.

Money from my account.

Money they thought came from Adrian.

Then Vanessa sent me a message.

“Elena, we need to talk.”

I looked at it.

Three years ago, I would have answered immediately.

This time…

I deleted it.

Because I finally understood something.

The hardest part of leaving a marriage was not losing someone you loved.

It was discovering how many people only loved what you provided.

And Adrian was about to discover the final truth.

The money he had been using for years…

was not just my salary.

It was the inheritance I had hidden since before our wedding.

And the moment his family learned whose money they had truly spent…

their entire world would collapse.
