PART 2: THE CHILD ADRIAN NEVER KNEW ABOUT

The next morning, I went to the Civil Registry alone.

The sky was gray.

The same city that had witnessed my marriage ten years ago now watched me end it.

The strange thing was…

I didn’t feel sad.

No tears.

No hesitation.

Only calm.

Because the hardest part wasn’t signing the divorce papers.

The hardest part had been accepting that the man I loved had already chosen to leave me long before that day.

When I walked out of the building, my phone kept vibrating.

Adrian.

Again.

And again.

I looked at his name on the screen.

Then I turned it off.

For ten years, I had always answered.

Even when I was exhausted.

Even when I was hurt.

Even when he was wrong.

This time…

I chose silence.

Adrian didn’t believe it.

He thought I was angry.

He thought I would eventually calm down.

Because in his mind, Elena always forgave.

Elena always waited.

Elena always came back.

Until he received the divorce confirmation.

That was when his expression finally changed.

His assistant placed the document on his desk.

“Mr. Cole, the divorce has been officially processed.”

Adrian stared at the paper.

The signature.

My signature.

The same hand that had once held his when he had nothing.

The same hand that had worked until it was covered in scars.

Gone.

“I didn’t agree.”

His assistant hesitated.

“Sir… you signed the agreement fifteen days ago.”

Those words silenced him.

Because he remembered.

He had signed it casually.

At that time, he believed it was temporary.

A strategy.

A sacrifice.

Something he could undo whenever he wanted.

He never imagined that I would accept.

That evening, Adrian returned to the old apartment.

The lights were off.

The place felt smaller than before.

The kitchen still had the old pan I used every day.

The table still had the scratches from years of meals together.

Everything was the same.

Except me.

He opened the bedroom door.

The closet was empty.

My clothes.

Gone.

The small box where I kept his old letters.

Gone.

The photo from our first year together.

Gone.

Only one thing remained.

A small envelope on the bedside table.

He opened it.

Inside was a photo.

A pregnancy ultrasound.

And a note.

His hands began shaking.

“Adrian.”

“Today was the day I planned to tell you.”

“I’m pregnant.”

“Six weeks.”

He stopped breathing.

The room became completely silent.

The man who had just lost his wife was now discovering he had lost the moment to become a father.

Adrian rushed to find me.

But this time…

I didn’t make it easy.

For ten years, he always knew where I was.

At home.

Waiting.

Now he had no idea.

He searched everywhere.

Until finally, he found my location through the lawyer.

A small apartment.

Nothing luxurious.

But warm.

When I opened the door and saw him standing there, I wasn’t surprised.

I had expected this moment.

His eyes were red.

He looked like someone who hadn’t slept for days.

“Elena…”

I didn’t answer.

His gaze moved to my stomach.

Then back to my face.

“Is it true?”

I knew what he meant.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

His eyes filled instantly.

“I’m going to be a father?”

I looked at him.

“You were supposed to know fifteen days ago.”

The sentence hurt him.

Because it was true.

He had missed the happiest moment.

Not because he didn’t have time.

Because he had chosen another woman.

“I didn’t know.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t want to know.”

His face turned pale.

“Elena, please.”

His voice was different.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

Just fear.

“I made a mistake.”

I smiled slightly.

“A mistake?”

He lowered his head.

“I was wrong.”

I looked at him.

“For ten years, I waited for you.”

A pause.

“I waited while you built your career.”

“I waited while your family accepted me.”

“I waited while you promised tomorrow.”

My hand rested gently on my stomach.

“But I won’t teach my child that love means waiting forever for someone to choose you.”

Adrian’s eyes became wet.

“Please don’t take my child away from me.”

I looked at him quietly.

“I’m not taking anything away.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“I’m protecting my child from learning that being loved means being someone’s second choice.”

A month later, Adrian publicly canceled the alliance with the Hale family.

The project suffered.

The board protested.

Victoria disappeared from his life.

But none of that mattered anymore.

Because by then…

I had already built a new life.

I returned to school.

I restarted my career.

I opened my own small business.

The woman who once stood beside Adrian in the shadows was finally standing under her own light.

Six months later, Adrian came to see me again.

This time, he didn’t bring flowers.

He didn’t bring expensive gifts.

He only brought a small box.

Inside was the ring he had given me ten years ago.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

I looked at him.

“Then why are you here?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because for the first time, I want to do something without expecting anything back.”

Silence.

“I want to be a good father.”

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I nodded.

“That is something you can choose.”

Not for me.

Not for our marriage.

For the child.

Years later, people still asked if I regretted leaving Adrian.

My answer was always the same.

No.

Because I didn’t lose the man who loved me.

I lost the man I thought loved me.

And that difference changed everything.

Adrian once believed one hundred million could replace ten years of my life.

He was wrong.

Because the most valuable thing I had ever given him…

was my love.

And once I stopped giving it…

he finally understood its worth.
