PART 2: THE DAY DOMINIC DISCOVERED WHO AUDREY REALLY WAS.

Dominic thought I was still the same woman who would forgive everything.

The same woman who would smile through exhaustion.

The same woman who would stay silent because she loved him.

He was wrong.

By the time he finished lunch with his family, I was already sitting in a quiet room far away from the chaos of my marriage.

My son Leo was sleeping peacefully beside me.

For the first time in days, I wasn’t wondering whether Dominic would come home.

I wasn’t checking my phone.

I wasn’t trying to understand why the man who promised to protect me had left me standing outside a hospital with twelve dollars in my hand.

I was simply planning my future.

A future without him.

My father’s attorney arrived that afternoon.

She placed several documents on the table.

“Mrs. Brooks, before we proceed, I need to confirm something.”

I looked up.

“Yes?”

“Do you want to file immediately?”

I looked at Leo.

My baby.

The child Dominic had abandoned without hesitation.

“Yes.”

My answer was immediate.

The attorney nodded.

“Then we begin today.”

She opened the first folder.

“The vehicle is registered solely under your name. Your husband has no legal ownership.”

I wasn’t surprised.

My father had always been careful.

The SUV had been a gift before my marriage.

A reminder that I had a family who would always protect me.

Not someone who would use me.

The attorney continued.

“The apartment is also under a trust established before your marriage.”

I stared at her.

“Dominic never knew?”

“No.”

I almost smiled.

For years, Dominic believed he was the provider.

He believed the lifestyle we had was because of his success.

He never knew that my father had quietly protected me from the beginning.

Because my father didn’t want me to marry someone who loved my family name.

He wanted me to find someone who loved me.

And I thought I had.

I was wrong.

Then my phone rang.

Dominic.

I stared at the screen.

The old me would have answered immediately.

The old me would have hoped he was calling to apologize.

But that woman was gone.

I let it ring.

A few seconds later, a message appeared.

Where are you? Why is the SUV not at the house?

Another message came.

Audrey, don’t play games. My mother needs the car tomorrow.

I looked at the words.

Not one question about Leo.

Not one question about my recovery.

Not one apology.

Only the vehicle.

I handed the phone to my attorney.

“Save everything.”

She nodded.

“Already done.”

Meanwhile, at the restaurant, Dominic’s confidence was disappearing.

Because when he walked outside after lunch, his SUV was gone.

Not stolen.

Not missing.

Gone legally.

A security officer was waiting beside the parking area.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

Dominic frowned.

“Yes?”

“I’m here regarding the vehicle.”

His expression changed.

“What about it?”

The officer handed him a document.

“Ownership has been confirmed. The vehicle has been returned to its registered owner.”

Dominic read the paper.

Then his face hardened.

“Who authorized this?”

The officer simply answered:

“Mrs. Audrey Brooks.”

For the first time that day, Dominic felt something he wasn’t used to.

Powerlessness.

Because he had spent years believing I was dependent on him.

He believed taking away comfort would make me come back.

He believed I had nowhere else to go.

Then his phone rang.

His mother.

“What happened to the car?” Victoria demanded.

Dominic looked around.

“I’m handling it.”

“No, you’re not,” she snapped.

“She took back the car?”

Silence.

Because even his mother understood what that meant.

The woman they thought they controlled had finally stopped asking for permission.

When Dominic returned home that evening, he expected to find me waiting.

Instead, the house was quiet.

My clothes were gone.

Leo’s things were gone.

The bedroom that once held my photographs, my memories, my wedding dress…

Was empty.

On the table was a single envelope.

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only a few lines.

Dominic,

For a long time, I thought love meant staying no matter how much I was hurt.

I was wrong.

Love should never require someone to beg to be treated like they matter.

You wanted a wife who would always be there.

Now you have exactly what you wanted.

A life without me.

His hands tightened around the paper.

Because underneath the letter was something else.

A copy of the hospital report.

Leo’s birth records.

And the divorce filing.

The reality finally hit him.

I wasn’t threatening to leave.

I had already left.

Then the front door opened.

Victoria walked in.

“What happened?”

Dominic didn’t answer.

She looked around the empty room.

Then she noticed the documents in his hand.

Her expression changed.

“She actually did it?”

Dominic remained silent.

Because he finally understood something his pride had never allowed him to see.

I had never needed his money.

I had never needed his status.

I had chosen him.

And he had mistaken my love for weakness.

But the biggest shock was still waiting.

The next morning, Dominic received an invitation to a business meeting.

The company listed as the host was one of the most powerful defense organizations in the country.

And the person signing the invitation was a name he knew very well.

General Charles Brooks.

My father.

The man Dominic had dismissed as an ordinary retired employee.

The man who had just learned exactly how his daughter and grandson were treated.

And this time…

Dominic wasn’t going to meet Audrey’s father as a powerful businessman.

He was going to meet him as the man who broke his daughter’s heart.
