PART 2: THE FLIGHT WHERE SANTIAGO FINALLY LOST ME

The next morning, Santiago woke up before his alarm.

For five years, that had never happened.

Normally, I was the one who woke him.

I prepared his coffee.

I checked his flight schedule.

I reminded him about weather reports and changes in routes.

I was always the person standing behind him before every flight.

But that morning…

The apartment was strangely quiet.

He walked out of the bedroom expecting to see me.

Instead, he found an empty kitchen.

No breakfast.

No note.

No familiar voice saying:

“Be careful today.”

His eyes moved around the room.

And for the first time, he felt something was wrong.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was no longer there.

At the airport, Santiago saw my name on the new flight schedule.

Captain Clara Jiang.

Route T028.

Independent commander.

He stared at the screen for a long time.

The assistant beside him smiled.

“Captain Shen, congratulations to Captain Jiang. She finally got her own route.”

Santiago didn’t answer.

Finally, he asked:

“When was this approved?”

“Yesterday.”

“Yesterday?”

His voice changed slightly.

The assistant looked confused.

“Yes. Director Morales personally approved it.”

Santiago lowered his eyes.

Yesterday.

The same night I told him I wanted to fly my own sky.

The same night he never noticed the application on the table.

The same night he was more interested in a bracelet than the future of the woman who had flown beside him for five years.

My first flight as captain was not difficult.

Not because the weather was perfect.

Not because the route was easy.

But because for the first time…

I wasn’t flying behind someone.

I wasn’t waiting for someone to notice me.

I was responsible for my own decisions.

When the plane rose above the clouds, I looked through the window.

The sky was exactly the same.

But I was different.

The girl who once believed love was the safest destination was gone.

Now I understood.

Some people were not meant to fly beside you forever.

Some people were only there to teach you how to fly alone.

Three days later, Santiago came to find me.

I had just finished a training session when I saw him standing outside the simulator room.

Still wearing his captain uniform.

Still looking like the man I once loved.

“Clara.”

I stopped.

“Captain Shen.”

That title made him freeze.

Because for five years, I had never called him that.

I always called him Santiago.

My boyfriend.

My partner.

The person closest to me.

Now he was only my colleague.

“What happened to us?”

I looked at him.

A strange question.

Because I had spent months asking myself the same thing.

“You tell me.”

His expression tightened.

“Because of that photo?”

I smiled slightly.

“No.”

“Then because of Natalia?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

I was silent for a moment.

Then I answered:

“Because I was standing beside you for five years, and you still didn’t see me.”

Those words made him unable to speak.

Santiago lowered his voice.

“Clara, Natalia and I are not together.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

He looked surprised.

“That’s it?”

“What else should I say?”

“Don’t you want to ask?”

I looked at him calmly.

“Five years ago, I would have.”

A pause.

“But now I don’t.”

That sentence hurt him more than anger.

Because he finally realized.

The worst thing was not losing an argument.

The worst thing was losing the person who used to care enough to argue.

That afternoon, Natalia appeared.

She walked toward us confidently.

“Captain Shen, the media is asking about the photo.”

Then she noticed me.

Her smile paused.

“Clara.”

I nodded.

She looked at Santiago.

“You haven’t explained?”

Santiago frowned.

“Explained what?”

Natalia looked embarrassed.

“The misunderstanding.”

I watched quietly.

For years, I had wondered why she always appeared at the right moments.

Why she always knew where Santiago was.

Why she always seemed certain he would protect her.

But now…

I didn’t care.

Santiago looked at her.

“Enough.”

For the first time, I heard him say that to her.

But it was too late.

Because protecting me after losing me was meaningless.

A week later, the airline held a celebration.

My promotion was announced publicly.

Captain Clara Jiang.

The first female captain on the T028 independent route.

Everyone applauded.

Including Santiago.

But when our eyes met across the room, I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

Not because I became successful.

Because he finally understood he had been standing beside someone extraordinary…

and treated her like she would always stay.

After the ceremony, Santiago stopped me.

“I miss you.”

I looked at him.

The old me would have cried.

The old me would have run back.

But that woman no longer existed.

“I miss who we were.”

His eyes became red.

“Can we start again?”

I looked toward the airport runway.

Planes were taking off.

Landing.

Flying toward different destinations.

“Maybe.”

He looked hopeful.

Then I continued:

“Maybe in another life.”

His expression fell.

“Clara…”

I smiled softly.

“You taught me something important.”

“What?”

“Love shouldn’t make me smaller.”

Silence.

“I spent five years helping you reach the sky.”

I looked at the aircraft waiting on the runway.

“Now it’s my turn.”

Then I walked away.

Leaving Santiago behind.

Months later, people still talked about the famous pilot couple who separated.

Some said it was because of an ex-girlfriend.

Some said it was because of pride.

But I knew the truth.

A relationship doesn’t end because someone walks away.

It ends when someone keeps choosing not to see the person standing beside them.

Santiago once held my hand while we dreamed about flying together forever.

But forever was never the destination.

Finding myself was.

And this time…

I was finally flying my own route.
