PART 2: THE HUSBAND WHO WANTED ME TO DISAPPEAR

For the next two weeks, I became the perfect wife.

The wife Sergio thought he wanted.

I reminded him to take his supplements.

I prepared his meals.

I asked about his work.

I smiled when he complained.

I even thanked him for “taking care” of me.

Every time I looked at him, I saw the same thing.

Not my husband.

A stranger who had already planned my funeral while I was still alive.

Sergio believed he was winning.

He didn’t know that every document he thought he had hidden was already copied.

Every conversation with his mother was saved.

Every transaction was recorded.

And the most important thing…

I was no longer afraid of losing him.

One morning, Sergio woke up complaining about stomach pain.

I immediately walked over.

“Are you okay?”

He looked surprised.

Before, whenever he felt uncomfortable, I would panic.

I would cancel appointments.

I would search for doctors.

I would stay awake all night taking care of him.

Now I simply smiled.

“You should rest.”

He seemed satisfied.

“See? You finally understand.”

Understand.

That word almost made me laugh.

Yes.

I finally understood.

I understood that love without respect was just a sacrifice.

I understood that loyalty from only one person was not a marriage.

And I understood that sometimes the person you spend your life protecting is the person waiting for your downfall.

A week later, I went through the final medical examinations.

The doctor smiled.

“Your condition is treatable. You found it early.”

I nodded.

For the first time in weeks, I felt relieved.

Not because I was afraid of death.

But because I finally had a chance to start over.

When I returned home, Sergio was sitting on the sofa.

His mother was there.

They stopped talking when they saw me.

That small silence confirmed everything.

They were discussing me.

I placed my bag down calmly.

“Mom came to visit?”

My mother-in-law smiled.

“Yes, I was worried about your health.”

I looked at her.

The same woman who told her son to hide my report.

The same woman who calculated my inheritance before my death.

“That’s very kind.”

Sergio looked at me.

“You should thank Mom. She cares about you.”

I almost smiled.

“Of course.”

After dinner, I went into the bedroom.

I opened the safe.

Inside were all the important documents.

My property records.

My savings.

My insurance information.

And the copy of the conversation I had recovered from the cloud backup.

I didn’t need revenge.

I only needed the truth.

Three days later, Sergio received a call from his lawyer.

I watched his expression change.

“What do you mean the ownership transfer failed?”

He walked around the room nervously.

“But she signed everything years ago.”

I looked up.

Interesting.

So there were more plans.

When he hung up, he noticed me.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

I smiled.

“Nothing.”

He became uncomfortable.

Because for the first time, he couldn’t read me.

That night, Sergio’s mother called him again.

I wasn’t trying to listen.

But the walls were thin.

“Did you solve it?”

“No.”

His voice was frustrated.

“She changed the beneficiary information.”

Silence.

Then his mother’s voice became sharp.

“How could she know?”

I froze.

Because that question answered everything.

They never worried about my illness.

They worried about losing what they wanted.

The next morning, I placed a folder on the dining table.

Sergio looked at it.

“What is this?”

“Something you should read.”

He opened it.

The first page was my medical report.

His face changed.

The second page was the recording of his conversation with his mother.

His hands started shaking.

The third page was my updated will.

He looked at me.

“You knew?”

I sat across from him.

“Yes.”

His face turned pale.

“Since when?”

“Since the night you decided my life was worth less than my assets.”

He stood up.

“You misunderstood.”

I almost smiled.

The same sentence.

The same excuse.

“I misunderstood you saying nobody wants to live with a sick person?”

His mouth opened.

No words came out.

“You tore up my medical report.”

“I didn’t know…”

“You knew enough.”

The room became silent.

For years, I imagined this moment.

I imagined screaming.

Crying.

Demanding answers.

But when it finally happened…

I felt nothing.

Only tiredness.

“I loved you, Sergio.”

He looked at me.

“I was ready to sell everything to save your life.”

His eyes lowered.

“But you were already planning how to benefit from mine.”

He tried to come closer.

I stepped back.

“No.”

For the first time, I stopped letting him touch me when I didn’t want him to.

“Sergio, you made a mistake.”

His eyes filled with fear.

“What mistake?”

I looked at him.

“You thought I was a woman who couldn’t survive without you.”

I picked up my bag.

“But you forgot something.”

“I survived thirteen years beside someone who didn’t love me.”

“And that was much harder than surviving without you.”

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, Sergio shouted:

“Where are you going?”

I stopped.

“To live.”

The divorce papers were already prepared.

The surgery date was already scheduled.

And the investigation into the hidden assets had already begun.

But what Sergio didn’t know…

Was that his biggest secret wasn’t the affair.

It wasn’t the money.

It wasn’t even his plan to abandon me.

Because the woman he thought was dying…

Had discovered something about him that would change everything.

And when the doctor called me the next morning with the final test results…

I finally understood why Sergio had been so desperate to get rid of me.
