PART 2: THE MOMENT ADRIAN REALIZED I WAS NO LONGER WAITING

Adrian stared at the divorce agreement on the table.

He didn’t touch it.

He just looked at it as if it were something he couldn’t understand.

After a long silence, he finally asked:

—Claire… are you serious?

I looked at him calmly.

—Yes.

His eyebrows tightened.

—You really want to end our marriage?

I almost smiled.

Because that question was strange coming from him.

The same man who had said those words three times.

The same man who used divorce as a weapon whenever he was angry.

The same man who believed I would always stand there, waiting for him to come back.

—Adrian, you were the one who wanted this.

His lips moved.

But he didn’t answer.

That night, Adrian didn’t leave.

He stayed in the living room for hours.

I knew because every time I opened the door, I saw the light still on.

But he didn’t come to apologize.

He didn’t ask me to stay.

Maybe because pride was still stronger than fear.

Or maybe because he still believed this was just another argument.

A few days later, he realized it wasn’t.

At Marcus’ wedding, everyone noticed something was wrong.

Normally, Adrian and I arrived together.

Everyone knew us as the perfect couple.

The successful CEO and his gentle wife.

The man who had everything.

The woman who always stood behind him.

But this time…

Adrian arrived alone.

People asked:

“Where is Claire?”

He only answered:

“She had something to do.”

A simple sentence.

But for some reason, it made him uncomfortable.

Because it was the first time he had to explain my absence.

Not my presence.

That night, Olivia Lu appeared.

She wore a beautiful dress and stood beside Adrian confidently.

The same way she had stood beside him in countless rumors.

She smiled.

—Adrian, everyone is asking about Claire.

His expression changed slightly.

—Don’t talk about her.

Olivia looked surprised.

—Why? You two aren’t divorced yet, right?

Silence.

Then she laughed softly.

—Don’t tell me you are hesitating.

Adrian looked at her.

For years, he thought Olivia understood him better than anyone.

But suddenly…

Her words sounded different.

—What do you mean?

Olivia took a sip of wine.

—You always said Claire would never leave.

That sentence made his hand stop.

Because it was true.

He had said it many times.

To friends.

To himself.

Claire loved him too much.

Claire needed him.

Claire would forgive him.

But now…

She didn’t.

The next morning, Adrian returned home earlier than usual.

He opened the door.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Before, whenever he came home, Claire would appear within minutes.

“You’re back?”

“Have you eaten?”

“I prepared your favorite dish.”

Those small things had become invisible to him.

Until they disappeared.

He walked into the kitchen.

There was no food waiting.

No warm light.

No familiar figure.

Only silence.

For the first time, he understood something terrifying.

He had not lost a wife.

He had lost a life that someone else had carefully built for him.

That afternoon, Adrian went to the guest room.

He stood outside the door.

Then he knocked.

—Claire.

No answer.

He knocked again.

—Can we talk?

After a while, the door opened.

I looked at him.

Not angry.

Not sad.

Just calm.

That calmness hurt him more than tears.

—What do you want to talk about?

He was silent.

Because he didn’t know.

For years, he was used to me explaining my pain.

Now that I no longer explained…

he didn’t know how to reach me.

Finally, he said:

—Why didn’t you fight for us?

I stared at him.

Then I asked:

—Why didn’t you?

His face froze.

One sentence.

But it left him speechless.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

—Claire, I know I hurt you.

I nodded.

—Yes.

He looked up.

—But I never stopped loving you.

I was quiet for a moment.

Then I answered:

—Maybe.

His expression changed.

Maybe.

Not yes.

Not no.

Just maybe.

Because love without actions had become meaningless to me.

—Adrian, do you know what I wanted after the accident?

He looked at me.

—I wanted you to come because I was your wife.

A pause.

—I didn’t want you to come because someone told you I was dying.

His face turned pale.

Because he finally understood.

I never wanted grand gestures.

I never wanted expensive gifts.

I only wanted to matter.

A week later, Adrian finally signed the divorce agreement.

Not because he stopped loving me.

But because he finally understood he couldn’t force someone to stay.

The day we went to finalize everything, he looked at me for a long time.

—Are you really happier without me?

I thought about it.

Then I nodded.

—Yes.

His eyes lowered.

That answer hurt him.

But it was the truth.

Months passed.

I moved into my own apartment.

I returned to work.

I rebuilt the parts of myself I had abandoned during our marriage.

And Adrian…

He changed too.

Not because he won me back.

But because losing me forced him to look at himself.

One evening, I received a message from him.

“I finally understand why you stopped crying.”

I looked at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

“Because the moment you stopped being afraid of losing me, I was the one who became afraid.”

I didn’t reply.

Not because I hated him.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because some endings didn’t need anger.

Some endings were simply proof that a person had finally chosen themselves.

Adrian once believed saying “divorce” would make me afraid.

He never imagined that one day…

those same words would become the reason I became free.
