PART 2: THE NIGHT MY HUSBAND LOST EVERYTHING.

Daniel’s name flashed across my phone screen.

I watched it ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

I didn’t answer.

Because for three weeks, Daniel had been planning the moment when he would leave me with nothing.

Now, I wanted him to experience the same uncertainty.

The call stopped.

A few seconds later, another one came.

Then another.

Finally, a message appeared.

“Pick up the phone, Audrey. What does ‘the accounts are frozen’ mean?”

I smiled.

For the first time in months, I allowed myself to smile.

Because Daniel had always underestimated one thing about me.

He thought silence meant ignorance.

He thought patience meant weakness.

He thought because I didn’t react, I didn’t know.

But I knew everything.

I answered the phone.

“Hello, Daniel.”

His breathing was heavy.

“What did you do?”

Interesting.

Not “Are you okay?”

Not “How did you find out?”

Not even an attempt to pretend innocence.

His first concern was the money.

“The accounts,” he said urgently. “Why can’t I access anything?”

I looked out at the sunrise beginning over the city.

“Because they belong to Sterling Global.”

There was a pause.

Then he laughed.

A nervous laugh.

“You can’t freeze my accounts.”

“No?”

“No, Audrey. We’re married.”

That sentence almost made me laugh.

For years, Daniel had used marriage as a shield.

A way to justify his decisions.

A way to make himself believe he was entitled to everything I had.

“You’re right,” I said calmly.

“We’re married.”

His voice softened slightly.

“Exactly. So stop playing games.”

I closed my eyes.

Playing games.

That was what he called protecting myself.

“Daniel, do you remember the first contract you signed when you joined Sterling Global?”

Silence.

“The executive access agreement.”

His breathing changed.

“You remember the clause?”

I heard him swallow.

Every executive who worked with my mother had to sign it.

A protection clause.

If anyone attempted unauthorized transfers, asset removal, or misuse of company resources, their access would immediately be terminated pending investigation.

Daniel had signed it six years ago.

He never read the details.

He was too busy celebrating his new position as my husband.

“You don’t understand,” he finally said.

“I understand perfectly.”

“No, Audrey. Chloe and I—”

He stopped.

Too late.

I noticed.

He had said her name.

Not “my colleague.”

Not “the consultant.”

Chloe.

The woman he had spent months hiding.

“The funny thing,” I said, “is that I never mentioned Chloe.”

The silence on the other end was complete.

I could almost feel the panic spreading through him.

“Who told you that?”

I leaned back.

“You told me.”

“I never—”

“You just did.”

Daniel went quiet.

And for once, he had no clever answer.

Then his voice changed.

Less arrogant.

More desperate.

“Audrey, listen to me. This isn’t what you think.”

There it was.

The sentence every guilty person used.

I looked at the evidence folder sitting on my desk.

Photos.

Documents.

Bank records.

Security footage.

Everything.

“You drugged my tea.”

The silence became even heavier.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Daniel.”

My voice became cold.

“I poured it into the sink.”

He stopped breathing.

“I knew something was wrong when you suddenly became thoughtful enough to make me tea.”

“You’re paranoid.”

“No.”

I opened the folder.

“I’m careful.”

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel whispered:

“What do you want?”

That question told me everything.

He wasn’t sorry.

He was negotiating.

“I want my mother’s bracelet returned.”

“You froze everything over a bracelet?”

I laughed softly.

“No, Daniel.”

I looked at the picture he sent me from the airport.

Chloe smiling.

Wearing something that represented my mother’s legacy.

“I froze everything because you thought you could steal from me and walk away.”

“It wasn’t stealing.”

“Then what was it?”

Silence.

“Daniel?”

He had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

A few hours later, my attorney arrived at my house with two investigators from Sterling Global.

They reviewed every item Daniel had removed.

The passports.

The cash.

The jewelry.

The documents.

And then we found something even worse.

The blue folder.

The one he took from the safe.

Inside were copies of internal company documents.

Confidential acquisition plans.

Future investment strategies.

Information that could destroy the company if it reached competitors.

My stomach turned.

This wasn’t just betrayal.

This was something much bigger.

Daniel hadn’t planned to leave me.

He had planned to destroy everything my mother spent her life building.

That afternoon, I received a message from Chloe.

At first, I thought it was a mistake.

But then I opened it.

“Audrey, please. You need to know the truth about Daniel.”

I stared at the screen.

The woman who had stolen my husband was asking to talk.

I almost ignored her.

Almost.

Then the next message arrived.

A photo.

Not of Daniel.

Not of Chloe.

A document.

And at the bottom was a signature that made my entire body go cold.

Because it belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had been helping Daniel long before he left that night.

Someone inside Sterling Global.

And suddenly, I realized Daniel wasn’t the only person who had been lying to me.
