PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND MY HUSBAND’S FIRE STATION.

I stood there holding the birthday cake, surrounded by the people who had spent years standing beside my husband in the most dangerous moments of his life.

But none of them could look me in the eyes.

That scared me more than anything.

“Captain Reyes,” I said slowly, “please tell me what happened.”

He looked at the balloons again.

The bright colors suddenly felt ridiculous in the cold silence of the station.

Then he sighed.

“Amanda… Tyler didn’t tell you?”

My stomach tightened.

“Tell me what?”

The captain rubbed his forehead.

For nine years, I had watched Tyler run toward burning buildings while everyone else ran away. I knew the risks. I knew every phone call in the middle of the night could change everything.

But this was different.

This wasn’t fear for his safety.

This was fear of the truth.

“Where is my husband?” I asked.

No one answered.

Then one of the younger firefighters quietly said, “He’s in the training room.”

I started walking.

But Captain Reyes stepped in front of me.

“Before you go in there, you need to understand something.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Tyler wasn’t trying to hurt you.”

That sentence confused me even more.

“What does that mean?”

The captain lowered his voice.

“It means he made a decision. A big one. And he thought keeping you away from it was protecting you.”

My heart sank.

Protecting me?

From what?

I pushed past him.

The training room door was slightly open.

And there he was.

Tyler.

My husband.

The man who always came home smelling like smoke and carried my sleeping daughter from her bed when he thought I wasn’t watching.

But he wasn’t training.

He was sitting alone at a table.

In front of him were several documents.

And a photograph.

When he saw me, his entire face changed.

Shock.

Guilt.

Fear.

“Amanda?”

I held up the cake.

My hands were shaking.

“Happy birthday.”

His eyes dropped.

The guilt on his face was immediate.

And that hurt more than anger would have.

“What happened?” I asked.

Tyler stood slowly.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

He didn’t answer.

That was my answer.

I walked closer and looked at the papers on the table.

My heart stopped.

They weren’t divorce papers.

They weren’t anything like that.

They were medical documents.

Tyler’s medical documents.

“What is this?”

He looked away.

“Amanda…”

“What is this?”

Finally, he whispered:

“I failed a physical evaluation three months ago.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“What do you mean failed?”

He swallowed.

“My lungs.”

The word hit me harder than I expected.

“My lungs were damaged from years of smoke exposure.”

I felt the cake box slip slightly in my hands.

“Tyler…”

“The department wanted me to step back temporarily.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

He looked down.

“I didn’t want you to worry.”

I laughed quietly, but there was no happiness in it.

“You thought hiding something this serious was protecting me?”

He had no answer.

For nine years, I had been afraid of losing him every time he walked into a burning building.

But I never imagined I would lose him while he was standing right in front of me.

Then I noticed another document.

A transfer request.

My eyes moved across the page.

And I froze.

“Tyler…”

He looked at me.

“Why does this say you requested a transfer to another station?”

His expression changed.

Because there was something else.

Something he hadn’t told me.

“I didn’t request it for myself.”

“Then for who?”

He hesitated.

And that hesitation brought back the same fear I felt when Captain Reyes looked at me earlier.

“Tyler.”

He finally took a deep breath.

“After my last call, I found out something.”

“What?”

He looked toward the station window.

Outside, the entire crew was silently watching.

“I wasn’t the only firefighter affected.”

My eyebrows tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

Tyler picked up the photograph from the table.

It showed the scene of one of his recent calls.

A building fire.

A rescue operation.

And several firefighters standing outside afterward.

He pointed to one person in the picture.

“Look at him.”

I stared.

Then I recognized the man.

Captain Reyes.

But that wasn’t what shocked me.

It was the person standing beside him.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had no reason to be there.

My own brother.

I looked back at Tyler.

“Why was my brother at your fire scene?”

Tyler’s face turned pale.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to find out.”

Before I could respond, his phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

And all the color disappeared from his face.

“Who is it?” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Because the name flashing on the screen was one neither of us expected.

It was my brother.

And the message he sent contained only six words:

“Tyler knows too much. Stop him.”
