PART 2: THE SECRET BURIED UNDER THE POOL.

I walked through Richard’s driveway, unable to understand what I was seeing.

Police cars.

A frightened Melissa.

A furious Richard.

And my father standing beside the pool like he had expected this moment all along.

“Dad,” I called out.

He turned around calmly.

No panic.

No anger.

Just that same quiet confidence he had the day before when Melissa refused to pay him.

I walked closer.

“What is happening?”

Before Dad could answer, the elderly woman stepped forward.

“My name is Eleanor Whitmore.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But it clearly meant something to Richard.

Because the second he heard it, his expression changed.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Richard said sharply.

The woman ignored him.

She handed me another document.

“This property used to belong to my family.”

I looked down at the papers.

Old records.

Property transfers.

Land surveys.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw the address.

Richard’s house.

“This land was sold twenty-seven years ago,” Eleanor continued. “But there was something never removed from the original agreement.”

I looked at my father.

“What does this have to do with the pool?”

Dad finally spoke.

“When I removed the old pipes, I found something unusual.”

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“That doesn’t give you the right to accuse me of anything.”

Dad looked at him.

“I didn’t accuse you of anything.”

His voice stayed calm.

“I simply documented what I found.”

That was when I understood.

Dad hadn’t argued because he wasn’t trying to convince Melissa.

He was protecting himself.

Before replacing anything, he had taken photographs.

Before digging near the foundation, he had recorded everything.

Before touching something that wasn’t part of the repair, he had made sure Richard and Melissa signed the paperwork.

Every single detail.

Richard’s face became pale.

“What exactly did you find?” I asked.

Dad looked toward the pool.

“An old metal box.”

The entire driveway went silent.

Melissa frowned.

“A box?”

Dad nodded.

“Hidden beneath the original pool structure.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“That box belonged to my grandfather.”

I stared at her.

“What was inside?”

She looked toward Richard.

“That is what he doesn’t want anyone to know.”

Richard’s voice became louder.

“This is ridiculous. This woman is confused. She’s eighty years old.”

Eleanor’s expression didn’t change.

“My memory is fine, Richard.”

She opened another folder.

“Especially when it comes to the property documents you tried to erase.”

My stomach tightened.

Erase?

Richard looked angry now.

Not confused.

Not offended.

Scared.

The police officer standing nearby finally stepped forward.

“Mr. Collins, we need you to answer a few questions.”

Richard laughed nervously.

“About a pool repair?”

The officer looked at the documents.

“No.”

He pointed toward the folder.

“About a property transfer that may involve fraud.”

Melissa turned toward her husband.

“Richard?”

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“What is she talking about?”

Richard didn’t answer.

And that silence told everyone more than words could.

I looked at my father.

“You knew this would happen?”

He shook his head.

“I knew something was wrong.”

He looked at the pool.

“When I started repairing it, I noticed the construction didn’t match the records for the house. The pool was newer than the foundation around it.”

“So you investigated?”

“No.”

Dad smiled slightly.

“I did my job.”

That was the thing about my father.

He wasn’t a lawyer.

He wasn’t a detective.

He was just a man who had spent thirty years fixing things.

And fixing things meant paying attention.

A few minutes later, the police opened the old metal box that had been recovered from beneath the pool.

Inside were documents wrapped carefully in plastic.

Old ownership records.

Original agreements.

And one handwritten letter.

Eleanor read the letter silently.

Then tears filled her eyes.

“My grandfather wrote this before he died.”

She looked at Richard.

“He knew someone might try to steal this land.”

Richard’s face changed.

Because suddenly everyone understood.

The pool repair was never about $7,800.

The money was just the beginning.

By refusing to pay my father, threatening my job, and pretending the agreement didn’t exist, Richard had accidentally created a reason for everything to be reviewed.

Dad had forced nothing.

He had simply followed the rules.

And now the truth was sitting in front of everyone.

As Richard was questioned by the police, Melissa slowly walked toward me.

Her voice trembled.

“Your father knew all of this?”

I looked at him.

Dad just picked up his tools and closed his truck.

“No,” I said.

“He just knew better than to let someone bully him.”

Then my phone buzzed.

It was a message from my boss.

Richard.

I opened it.

Only one sentence appeared:

“Your father didn’t just repair my pool… he destroyed everything I built.”

I looked at the message again.

And I realized something.

Richard still didn’t understand.

My father hadn’t destroyed anything.

He had only uncovered what was already broken.
