PART 2: THE SECRET MY BROTHER HID FOR FIFTEEN YEARS.

I stared at Tobias.

The man standing in front of me was someone I thought I knew my entire life.

My older brother.

The person who had been sitting in that wheelchair since we were teenagers.

The person I had protected.

The person I had felt guilty for leaving alone while I built my own life.

And now he was standing in front of me like the last fifteen years had never happened.

“You can’t just say something like that and expect me not to ask questions,” I whispered.

Tobias looked away.

The confidence he had shown underwater disappeared.

What remained was exhaustion.

Pain.

The kind of pain someone carries when they have been keeping a secret for too long.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

His silence answered before his words did.

“Because every person who knew the truth ended up losing something.”

The river moved quietly beneath the old pier.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Tobias reached into the waterproof pouch he had carried from the SUV.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

My hands started shaking as I looked through them.

The first picture was from fifteen years ago.

The night our parents died.

The official report said their car lost control on a mountain road.

A tragic accident.

But the photo showed something different.

The brake line.

Cut.

I looked at Tobias.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“I was sixteen. I survived because I was thrown from the vehicle before it caught fire.”

My breathing stopped.

“You weren’t paralyzed.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Tobias closed his eyes.

“Because the people responsible were still watching.”

He explained that after the accident, he discovered our parents had been fighting a business takeover attempt against Garrett’s father, Victor.

The shipyard our family built was worth hundreds of millions.

Victor wanted control.

But our parents refused to sell.

So he found another way.

The accident destroyed the family.

Or at least, that was what everyone thought.

“But Garrett wasn’t involved back then,” I said.

Tobias looked at me.

“That’s what I wanted to believe too.”

He handed me another document.

A marriage application.

Garrett’s signature.

Three years before our wedding.

But the date was what made my blood run cold.

It was signed before Garrett had even met me.

“How is this possible?”

Tobias answered quietly.

“Because he knew exactly who you were before you knew who he was.”

I felt sick.

Every memory replayed differently.

The first meeting.

The perfect timing.

The way Garrett always seemed to know what I needed.

The way he pushed me to trust him quickly.

It wasn’t romance.

It was strategy.

Then Tobias showed me one more thing.

A medical report.

My name was written at the top.

I recognized the hospital.

My heart dropped.

“What is this?”

Tobias hesitated.

“Your yearly health checks.”

I scanned the pages.

Everything looked normal.

Until I saw the notes from the laboratory.

A repeated prescription.

A supplement Garrett insisted I take every morning.

My hands went numb.

“That’s impossible.”

Tobias shook his head.

“It wasn’t a supplement.”

I looked at him.

“What was it?”

He took a deep breath.

“A drug designed to make you dependent, tired, and easier to control.”

The world became silent.

For three years, I had blamed myself.

My exhaustion.

My dizziness.

My inability to focus.

I thought I was overworked.

I thought running the shipyard was breaking me down.

But Garrett had been slowly changing me.

Preparing me.

Making me easier to manipulate.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Both of us froze.

There was one message.

Unknown number.

I know you survived.

My blood turned cold.

Another message arrived seconds later.

Your brother was always the weak link. You should have let him drown.

Tobias took the phone from my hand.

His face changed.

Because he recognized the number.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

“Tobias.”

Finally, he whispered:

“It’s Victor.”

Garrett’s father.

The man who was supposed to be retired.

The man who was supposed to have no connection to any of this.

Then another message appeared.

You have one choice, Rosalind. Come back and sign the transfer documents, or your brother’s secret becomes public.

I looked at Tobias.

He understood immediately.

They knew about him walking.

They had known all along.

The entire drowning attempt wasn’t just to kill me.

It was a test.

They wanted to see if Tobias would reveal himself.

And now they had their answer.

But before we could decide our next move, Tobias looked toward the road.

His expression changed.

“Rosalind…”

“What?”

“He didn’t come alone.”

I followed his eyes.

Across the water, hidden beneath the darkness, several headlights appeared.

Garrett was standing there.

Watching.

Waiting.

And beside him was someone I never expected to see.

Someone who should have been on our side.

Someone who knew every secret about our family.

My lawyer.

The person who had handled my inheritance since my parents died.

Tobias whispered:

“The person who helped Garrett plan everything…”

“Was the person we trusted most.”
