PART 2: THE SECRET MY HUSBAND NEVER KNEW ABOUT ME.

Luca stood frozen in the doorway.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked completely lost.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Not annoyed.

Lost.

His eyes moved from my father to the baby sleeping peacefully in his arms.

Then back to me.

“Jessi…”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Why is Arthur Sterling holding my son?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because for three days, I had replayed that moment in my mind.

The moment I sat alone in the hospital.

The moment I heard him laugh while I was in pain.

The moment he chose a birthday dinner over the birth of his own child.

And now he was standing in front of me, confused because the truth he had ignored for years was finally right in front of him.

My father looked at Luca calmly.

“Because unlike you, I showed up.”

The room became silent.

Luca’s face changed.

The words hit harder than any argument could have.

“Mr. Sterling…”

Dad interrupted him.

“No.”

His voice remained steady.

“Don’t call me that.”

Luca swallowed.

Because he suddenly realized.

The man he had dismissed.

The man his mother had mocked.

The man he thought was just an old retired salesman…

Had been standing beside me while he was celebrating.

“I didn’t know,” Luca said.

I looked at him.

“That’s the problem.”

He turned toward me.

“Jessi, I swear, I didn’t know you were…”

“Rich?”

I finished his sentence.

“Important?”

I shook my head.

“That’s what you’re worried about?”

Luca opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he knew.

He knew the answer was yes.

For two years, he had loved the version of me he thought was ordinary.

The version who cooked dinner.

The version who listened to his complaints.

The version who never used her family name.

But now that he knew who my father was, everything suddenly looked different to him.

And that hurt more than anything.

My father carefully adjusted Leo’s blanket.

“Your son was born at 4:17 in the morning.”

Luca looked down.

“I know.”

“No.”

Dad’s eyes hardened.

“You know the time because your wife told you.”

A pause.

“You weren’t there.”

Luca looked away.

“I made a mistake.”

I almost laughed.

A mistake.

That word again.

People always called things mistakes when they finally realized the consequences.

“You missed the birth of your son because your mother wanted a birthday celebration.”

His face tightened.

“She’s my mother.”

“And I was your wife.”

Silence.

That was the first time he had no excuse.

Then his phone rang.

The name on the screen appeared.

Wendy.

His mother.

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Luca, where are you?”

The speaker was loud enough that we could hear her.

“I told you not to let Jessi turn this into a drama. You need to come home. Your family is waiting.”

My father looked at me.

I didn’t say anything.

I didn’t need to.

Luca finally heard what I had heard.

His mother didn’t care about the hospital.

She didn’t care about Leo.

She only cared about controlling the situation.

“Mom…”

His voice changed.

“What did you say to Jessi?”

There was a pause.

Then Wendy laughed.

“What? She complained to you?”

Luca’s expression darkened.

“She was in labor.”

Another pause.

“She was going to be fine.”

The room went completely still.

Even Luca seemed shocked hearing it out loud.

Because when someone says something cruel casually, sometimes it sounds even worse.

“I was at your birthday dinner,” he whispered.

“Yes.”

“And my son was being born.”

Wendy became defensive.

“Oh, don’t start acting guilty now. You’re still coming home, right?”

Luca slowly lowered the phone.

For once, he didn’t follow her instructions.

He ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

“Jessi…”

I saw the regret in his eyes.

Real regret.

But regret was not the same as love.

Regret came after damage was done.

“I want to fix this.”

I looked at him.

“You can’t fix the moment you chose not to be there.”

His face fell.

My father placed Leo gently into my arms.

Then he stood.

“Luca.”

Luca looked at him.

“You need to understand something.”

Dad walked closer.

“My daughter never told you who I was because she wanted you to love her without knowing.”

A pause.

“But you proved something.”

“What?”

Dad looked directly at him.

“You didn’t fail because you didn’t know her family.”

His voice became colder.

“You failed because you never bothered to know her.”

Luca stood silently.

Then his eyes moved toward the folder on the table.

My divorce papers.

He noticed them.

His expression changed.

“You filed?”

I nodded.

His breathing became heavier.

“When?”

“The day after Leo was born.”

“You were serious?”

I looked at my son.

“Yes.”

For the first time, Luca looked afraid.

Not of my father.

Not of losing money.

Of losing me.

Because he finally understood something.

I wasn’t leaving because I wanted revenge.

I was leaving because I had finally accepted that my husband had already abandoned me.

Then Dad’s assistant entered the room.

“Mr. Sterling, the documents you requested are ready.”

Luca looked confused.

“What documents?”

I watched his face carefully.

Because the next thing my father was about to reveal would change everything.

Dad took the folder.

And placed it on the table between us.

“Documents proving what your family has been hiding from Jessi for the last two years.”

Luca froze.

“What are you talking about?”

My father opened the folder.

Inside were financial records.

Messages.

And one name that made Luca’s entire expression change.

Wendy.

Because my father hadn’t just come to protect me after labor.

He had spent the last three days finding out exactly why my marriage had fallen apart.

And what he discovered was something even I never expected.
