PART 2: THE WIFE THEY IGNORED RETURNED AS THE WOMAN WHO COULD TAKE EVERYTHING AWAY.

Aaron called me forty-seven times that day.

I knew because when I turned my phone back on the next morning, the screen was filled with his name.

Forty-seven missed calls.

Three voice messages.

Nine messages from his mother.

And one message from Jasmine.

Claire, this has gone too far. You embarrassed Aaron publicly. We need to talk.

I stared at the screen.

Then I deleted it.

For three years, everyone had expected me to explain myself.

To apologize.

To understand.

To forgive.

But nobody ever asked Aaron why he disappeared every night.

Nobody asked why Jasmine knew his schedule better than I did.

Nobody asked why my husband looked more comfortable standing beside another woman at company events than standing beside his own wife.

So I stopped answering questions.

I started making decisions.

By noon, Nathan had finished reviewing every document.

He placed the folder on the desk.

“Claire, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“This isn’t a normal divorce.”

I looked at him.

“Because of Aaron?”

He shook his head.

“Because of you.”

I frowned.

Nathan opened the folder.

“Your grandfather didn’t just leave you shares.”

“He left you voting rights.”

I remained silent.

“Do you know what that means?”

“Control?”

“Exactly.”

He leaned forward.

“For three years, Aaron Prescott has been making decisions at Prescott Global believing he had complete freedom.”

“But a portion of that power never belonged to him.”

“It belonged to the person he ignored every night.”

I looked out the window.

It was almost funny.

Aaron spent years introducing me as:

“My wife Claire.”

As if being his wife was my entire identity.

He never realized…

I was Claire Prescott before I was Claire Prescott.

The following Monday, Aaron called an emergency meeting.

I knew because Nathan sent me the invitation.

Prescott Global board meeting.

Agenda:

“Discussion regarding recent personal actions affecting company reputation.”

I almost laughed.

The man who spent years protecting his image was finally worried about reputation.

But I attended.

Not as Aaron’s wife.

As a shareholder.

The room went silent when I walked in.

Aaron stood at the end of the table.

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man who held my hand during our wedding.

The man who promised I would always come first.

Then I remembered the empty side of the bed.

The unanswered messages.

The nights he chose someone else.

And the feeling disappeared.

“Claire.”

His voice was low.

“What are you doing here?”

I placed my folder on the table.

“Attending the meeting.”

One of the executives looked confused.

“Mrs. Prescott, this is a company matter.”

I smiled.

“Exactly.”

I opened the folder.

“Which is why I’m here.”

Aaron’s face changed.

Because he finally understood.

I wasn’t there to discuss our marriage.

I was there because I had a legal right to be there.

Nathan handed documents to the board members.

“The Prescott family trust has confirmed that Claire Prescott holds a significant minority position with voting authority.”

The room became completely silent.

Aaron looked at me.

“You never told me.”

I met his eyes.

“You never asked.”

That sentence hurt him more than anger would have.

Because it was true.

He knew everything about the woman he wanted me to be.

He knew how I cooked.

How I organized his life.

How I supported his career.

But he never asked who I was without him.

Then Jasmine walked into the room.

She looked confused.

“Aaron, what’s happening?”

Nobody answered.

She looked at the documents.

Then at me.

“You can’t do this.”

I turned toward her.

“Do what?”

“Take control?”

“Protect my interests?”

“Use the rights that were mine before you entered my life?”

Her face turned pale.

Because she finally realized something.

I wasn’t the obstacle.

I was the foundation.

The company she thought she was stepping into…

was partly standing on my family’s money.

Aaron stepped closer.

“Claire, can we talk privately?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because for three years, you made private decisions that affected my life.”

“Today, we discuss them publicly.”

Nobody spoke.

The same people who watched Jasmine stand beside Aaron at events were now watching her realize she had never truly belonged there.

Then Nathan placed one final document on the table.

“This is the financial audit.”

Aaron looked at him.

“What audit?”

“The one requested after we discovered irregular transfers.”

His expression changed.

“What transfers?”

Nathan looked at him.

“Payments made to businesses connected to Jasmine Cole.”

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Questions.

Confusion.

Aaron turned toward Jasmine.

“What is he talking about?”

For the first time…

Jasmine had no perfect answer.

Because the woman who always knew exactly what to say…

was finally caught without a script.

I watched Aaron’s expression change.

Not because he finally understood my pain.

But because he finally realized something much worse.

The woman he thought was loyal to him…

might have been using him too.

That evening, Aaron came to my house.

Not the company.

Not the office.

My house.

The place he left behind.

He stood outside the door.

“Claire.”

I opened it.

“What?”

His eyes were tired.

“I made a mistake.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“You made choices.”

He lowered his head.

“Can we fix this?”

I was quiet for a moment.

Then I answered:

“The woman who wanted to fix everything disappeared the fifth time you didn’t come home.”

His face changed.

Because he remembered.

The fifth night.

The night I stopped calling.

The night I stopped crying.

The night I finally understood that losing him was not the worst thing that could happen.

The worst thing was losing myself while trying to keep him.

Aaron looked at me.

“Is there any chance?”

I closed the door halfway.

“Maybe.”

His eyes lifted.

A small hope appeared.

Then I continued:

“But not for the woman you ignored.”

“The woman standing here now has nothing to prove to you.”

The door closed.

And for the first time in three years…

Aaron Prescott was the one standing outside.

Waiting.

The next morning, the board received another announcement.

A new strategic leader would join Prescott Global.

And when Aaron saw the name attached to the position…

he finally understood.

The wife he abandoned wasn’t fighting for revenge.

She was simply returning to the place she had always belonged.

And this time…

everyone would know her name.
