PART 2: THE WOMAN ADRIAN NEVER EXPECTED TO LOSE

I stared at Marcus Reed’s message for a long time.

“I want to ask you.”

Three simple words.

Yet after everything that happened that night, they felt strange.

Because for years, nobody had asked me what I wanted.

Not Adrian.

Not his friends.

Not even myself.

Everyone only told me what my place was.

Stay quiet.

Be grateful.

Accept what was given.

I typed slowly.

“What do you want to ask?”

The reply came almost immediately.

“Why did you stay with him for so many years?”

I looked out of the taxi window.

The city lights passed by, one after another.

A few years ago, that question would have hurt.

Because I would have answered:

“Because I loved him.”

But now…

I wasn’t sure that was the whole truth anymore.

“Because I thought he loved me.”

After sending those words, I put my phone down.

But Marcus replied again.

“You deserve someone who chooses you first.”

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t want comfort.

I didn’t want another man’s sympathy.

I only wanted to rebuild the part of myself that Adrian had slowly erased.

That night, I stayed at a small hotel.

Nothing compared to the villa.

No expensive furniture.

No giant bedroom.

No view of the garden where Adrian once told me I would always belong.

But when I closed the door behind me, I finally felt like I could breathe.

For the first time in years…

Nobody was waiting for me to be perfect.

Nobody was deciding what I should wear.

Nobody was reminding me how much they had spent on me.

I sat on the edge of the bed and opened my old laptop.

Inside were documents I hadn’t touched for years.

Certificates.

Work records.

Projects.

Everything from before I met Adrian.

The woman in those documents looked unfamiliar.

Confident.

Independent.

Alive.

I stared at her for a long time.

Then I whispered:

“Welcome back.”

Three days later, Adrian came looking for me.

I wasn’t surprised.

Someone like him wasn’t used to losing control.

He found my new apartment through an old contact.

When I opened the door and saw him standing there, I noticed something immediately.

He looked tired.

Not the calm, perfect Adrian who walked through the villa.

Not the man who proudly stood beside Claire.

Just a man who hadn’t slept.

—Why didn’t you come back?

That was his first question.

Not “Are you okay?”

Not “Where have you been?”

Just:

Why didn’t you come back?

I leaned against the door.

—Why would I?

His jaw tightened.

—Because we need to talk.

I almost laughed.

—About what?

He looked away.

For the first time, he seemed unable to find the right words.

—About what happened.

I nodded.

—You mean when you told everyone anyone could chase me?

His face changed.

—Elena, I was angry.

—No.

I interrupted him.

—You were honest.

That sentence made him freeze.

Because deep down, we both knew it.

Angry people said what they truly thought.

Adrian stepped closer.

—Claire misunderstood the situation.

I looked at him.

—She called me your lover.

Silence.

—And you didn’t correct her.

His expression changed.

—It wasn’t that simple.

I smiled.

—It was actually very simple.

I pointed at him.

—You had a chance to protect me.

Then I pointed at myself.

—You chose not to.

Adrian lowered his head.

For once, he had no excuse.

A week later, something unexpected happened.

The internet exploded.

Claire’s carefully created image began to collapse.

Photos appeared.

Messages leaked.

People discovered that her return to Adrian’s life wasn’t as innocent as everyone believed.

She had known about me.

She knew Adrian and I had been together for years.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

And worse…

She had been encouraging Adrian to distance himself from me long before that night.

When Adrian discovered the truth, he went to confront her.

But it was too late.

Claire had already disappeared.

The woman he thought was his first love had left him with nothing except questions.

That evening, Adrian called me.

I answered only because I wanted closure.

—Elena…

His voice sounded broken.

—I was wrong.

I closed my eyes.

Those words.

The words I had waited years to hear.

But strangely…

They no longer made me happy.

—Adrian, do you know what the worst part was?

He stayed silent.

—I wasn’t angry because you loved someone else.

A pause.

—I was hurt because you made me believe I was important while treating me like I was replaceable.

His breathing became heavier.

—I want to fix this.

I looked around my small apartment.

The place where I had started finding myself again.

—No.

He froze.

—Why?

I answered softly:

“Because I don’t hate you anymore.”

Silence.

“And that’s how I know I’m finally free.”

Months later, Adrian saw me again.

Not in old clothes.

Not carrying a small suitcase.

Not asking him for anything.

I was standing at a business conference, wearing a simple but elegant suit, surrounded by people who respected my work.

The woman he saw wasn’t the woman who left his villa.

She was someone completely different.

Someone who didn’t need to be chosen.

Someone who had already chosen herself.

Adrian stood in the crowd, watching me smile.

And for the first time, he understood the cruelest truth:

He didn’t lose me when he pushed me away.

He lost me years ago…

when he believed I would always stay.
