PART 2: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LETTER “T”

The silence inside Ocean Crown lasted only a few seconds.

But to me, it felt like an entire year.

Thirty-eight people were standing behind me.

My family.

His family.

Everyone who had spent years believing Ethan Walker was the perfect husband.

The man who worked hard.

The man who respected his marriage.

The man who was too busy saving flights and passengers to make mistakes.

But now he was sitting at a romantic table.

With another woman.

On the exact night he said he had to work.

Ethan stood up slowly.

His face had lost all color.

“Claire…”

My mother-in-law looked at him.

Then at the woman beside him.

Then back at me.

Her expression changed from confusion to embarrassment.

“What is happening?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone already understood.

The woman beside Ethan looked terrified.

She immediately stepped away.

“Mr. Walker, I think I should leave.”

Ethan grabbed his phone from the table.

“No.”

The word came out too quickly.

Everyone heard it.

Including me.

The woman stopped.

And that tiny reaction told me more than any confession could.

He wasn’t worried about explaining.

He was worried about losing her.

I looked at the table.

The pink tulips.

The expensive wine.

The card.

“To my dear T.”

I picked it up.

Ethan’s eyes followed my hand.

“Claire, listen.”

I looked at him.

“I am listening.”

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

That scared him.

Because Ethan knew me.

He knew I was not someone who created scenes.

I was the person who stayed quiet until I was certain.

“The reservation was made yesterday,” I said.

His expression froze.

“What?”

“The romantic table.”

I held up the card.

“The flowers.”

I looked at the woman.

“And your guest.”

Nobody spoke.

My cousin whispered:

“Is this why he said he was working?”

My mother closed her eyes.

My father looked at Ethan with disappointment.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Claire, this isn’t what you think.”

I almost smiled.

How many times had people said that when it was exactly what I thought?

“Then explain.”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The woman finally spoke.

“My name is Tessa.”

I looked at her.

Tessa.

The letter.

T.

“I didn’t know he was married.”

A few people reacted immediately.

My mother-in-law looked shocked.

“You didn’t know?”

Tessa shook her head.

“He told me…”

She stopped.

Her face changed.

Because she realized something.

She had said too much.

I stepped closer.

“He told you what?”

Silence.

Tessa looked at Ethan.

For the first time, she looked uncertain about him.

“He told me he was separated.”

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Separated.

Ethan looked at me.

“Claire, I was going to tell you.”

I laughed softly.

Not loudly.

Not angrily.

Just disappointed.

“Tell me when?”

He didn’t answer.

“After New Year’s?”

Silence.

“After you finished pretending?”

His jaw tightened.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“No.”

I nodded.

“You just wanted both lives.”

That sentence hit him.

Because it was true.

He wanted the wife who managed the home.

The family who respected him.

The stable life.

And he wanted the woman waiting at the romantic table.

The fantasy.

The escape.

My mother-in-law suddenly stepped forward.

“Claire, maybe we should discuss this privately.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

She hesitated.

“Because everyone is here.”

I smiled.

“Exactly.”

I looked around.

“Everyone is here.”

For years, Ethan had protected his image.

He cared about how people saw him.

His reputation.

His perfect life.

So I gave him exactly what he gave me.

The truth.

In front of everyone.

“Ethan told me he was working tonight.”

I looked at the table.

“But he reserved this dinner.”

I held up my phone.

“The reservation was made under our shared account.”

Everyone looked at him.

“You paid for this with money from our family account.”

Ethan immediately said:

“I was going to replace it.”

I nodded.

“Of course.”

That answer was almost worse.

Because it meant he knew.

He knew it wasn’t okay.

He just thought he could fix everything later.

The restaurant manager approached carefully.

“Ms. Bennett?”

I turned.

“Yes?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“There is something else you should know.”

Ethan’s face changed.

“What?”

The manager looked at him.

“Mr. Walker requested this table three weeks ago.”

Three weeks.

Not yesterday.

Not an impulse.

Three weeks.

The same period when Ethan started acting like the perfect husband.

Breakfast.

Flowers.

The new coat.

All of it.

Not love.

Guilt.

The manager continued:

“He also requested that the reservation remain hidden from the main guest list.”

The room became silent again.

I looked at Ethan.

“Hidden.”

He looked away.

And finally, I understood.

The edited work schedule.

The fake duty shift.

The sudden kindness.

Everything had a reason.

He wasn’t planning one bad night.

He was building another life.

I removed my wedding ring slowly.

The room went quiet.

Ethan stared.

“Claire…”

I placed the ring on the table beside the tulips.

“The family dinner can continue.”

His eyes widened.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“But I won’t.”

I turned around.

My mother called my name.

My aunt reached for my arm.

But I kept walking.

Outside Ocean Crown, the cold night air touched my face.

For the first time that evening, I felt calm.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Ethan.

“Please don’t end twelve years because of one mistake.”

I looked at the screen.

One mistake.

I typed back:

“You didn’t make one mistake, Ethan.”

I paused.

“You made a reservation.”

Then I blocked his number.

Because a reservation could be canceled.

A dinner could be forgotten.

But trust…

Once someone deliberately breaks it…

You don’t simply book it again.
