PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO LEFT BEFORE HE COULD ABANDON HER

Three days after I sent the message to my father, everything changed.

Not because Adrián noticed.

He didn’t.

That was the most painful part.

The man who once claimed he could recognize every emotion on my face didn’t realize I had already stopped waiting for him.

He didn’t see the empty shelves.

He didn’t see the missing photographs.

He didn’t see that the woman who used to run to the door every time he came home was no longer there.

For him, I was still the same Isabella.

The obedient girl who would forgive anything.

The woman who would stay.

But he had forgotten one thing.

A person can love someone deeply and still choose to leave.

The next morning, my father called me.

“Isabella.”

His voice was gentle.

“Are you sure?”

I looked at the half-packed suitcase beside me.

For years, France had been a possibility.

A marriage alliance between families.

A future my father had mentioned many times.

But I always refused.

Because I had Adrián.

Because I believed love was more important than status.

Because I thought I had already found my home.

Now, looking at everything I had packed, I realized something.

I wasn’t running away.

I was returning to myself.

“Yes, Dad.”

There was silence.

Then he asked:

“Did he hurt you?”

I closed my eyes.

A simple question.

But one I couldn’t answer easily.

Because Adrián had never hit me.

He had never shouted at me.

He had done something much quieter.

He had spent three years making me believe I was chosen…

when I was only a replacement.

“Yes,” I finally whispered.

My father’s voice became colder.

“Tell me his name.”

“No.”

“Isabella.”

“I don’t want revenge.”

I looked at the ring box sitting on the table.

“I just don’t want to spend another day being someone’s substitute.”

That afternoon, Adrián finally returned.

He walked into the villa carrying flowers.

Again.

The same roses.

The same smile.

The same performance.

“Isabella.”

He looked around.

Then frowned.

Something was different.

“What happened here?”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“The house feels empty.”

I almost smiled.

Interesting.

He noticed the house before he noticed me.

“I packed some things.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“Why?”

I looked at him.

“Because I’m leaving.”

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Then he laughed.

A short, confused laugh.

“Leaving where?”

“France.”

The smile disappeared.

“What?”

“My father arranged everything.”

His expression changed immediately.

Not sadness.

Not fear of losing me.

Disbelief.

As if the idea that I could make a decision without him was impossible.

“Isabella, stop being dramatic.”

There it was.

The same tone.

The same arrogance.

The same assumption that my feelings were just temporary emotions.

“I’m not being dramatic.”

“Then what is this?”

“A decision.”

He stepped closer.

“You are upset because of Lucía.”

I looked at him.

Finally.

After everything.

He still thought this was about another woman.

“No, Adrián.”

I shook my head.

“I’m upset because I finally understood who I was to you.”

His face became serious.

“You misunderstood that conversation.”

“No.”

My voice remained calm.

“I understood every word.”

His expression changed slightly.

A small crack.

“You heard that?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

For the first time, Adrián looked uncomfortable.

“I was angry.”

“You called me a copy.”

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“You said I was seventy percent.”

He looked away.

That was enough.

Because some words couldn’t be taken back.

“You spent three years loving the memory of another woman.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

I picked up my suitcase.

“And the worst part is that you never even realized I was a real person.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re choosing a stranger’s family over me?”

I stopped.

A stranger’s family.

That sentence almost made me laugh.

Because for three years, I had chosen him over everyone.

My friends.

My opportunities.

My own identity.

And he had the courage to call my future a betrayal.

“I chose myself.”

Those four words silenced him.

The next week, news spread quickly.

The Salvatierra family alliance with France was confirmed.

Everyone wanted to know why.

Some said I was heartless.

Some said I abandoned Adrián after he became successful.

Nobody knew the truth.

Nobody knew that I had already spent three years disappearing while standing beside him.

The day before my flight, Adrián came to see me.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“I ended things with Lucía.”

I looked at him.

“And?”

His eyes lowered.

“Come back.”

A year ago, those words would have destroyed me.

Now they only made me sad.

“Why?”

His face changed.

“Because I love you.”

I smiled gently.

“No, Adrián.”

He froze.

“You love the person who always stayed.”

I picked up my passport.

“But that person is gone.”

At the airport, I didn’t look back.

Not because I didn’t care.

Because I finally cared about myself more.

Months later, when I arrived in France, I started a new life.

A new language.

A new city.

A new version of Isabella.

And one evening, I received a message from an old friend.

Attached was a news article.

Adrián Moreau had publicly apologized for his past relationship.

The article said he had lost the woman he thought would always wait for him.

I closed the message.

I didn’t feel victorious.

I didn’t feel happy.

I only felt peaceful.

Because the greatest revenge wasn’t watching him regret losing me.

It was realizing…

I had stopped wanting him back long before he realized he had lost me.
