I stared at the document.
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
Because the name written on that page wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had helped me after Sarah died.
My hands tightened around the paper.
“That’s impossible.”
Renee didn’t look surprised.
“That’s what everyone says when they discover the truth.”
I looked at her.
“How long have you known?”
“Three months.”
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?”
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
“Because the person behind this controls almost everyone around me.”
She pointed toward the document.
“That includes doctors, executives, and people I once called friends.”
I read the report again.
Financial transfers.
Private communications.
Hidden agreements.
Someone had been preparing to remove Renee from Sterling Global long before her condition became public.
And the person leading it…
was Marcus.
Her missing boyfriend.
The same man she thought had abandoned her because he couldn’t handle her illness.
He hadn’t disappeared.
He had been negotiating.
“Why me?”
The question came out before I could stop it.
Renee looked at me.
“Because you are the only person Marcus doesn’t know how to control.”
I almost laughed.
“I’m an electrician.”
“No.”
Her voice was calm.
“You’re someone who lost everything and still chose to do the right thing.”
I looked away.
I didn’t feel like a hero.
I felt like a man who spent four years avoiding the place where his wife died.
But Renee saw something else.
“You came to a hospital in the middle of the night for a stranger.”
“Most people wouldn’t.”
I didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
Six months.
That was what she wanted.
Six months pretending to be her partner.
Six months attending company events.
Six months convincing the board that Renee still had support.
Six months until she could expose the people trying to steal her company.
The money was unbelievable.
But that wasn’t why I agreed.
I agreed because I understood something.
Renee wasn’t afraid of dying.
She was afraid of dying while everyone around her celebrated.
The next morning, the news shocked the business world.
“Sterling Global CEO Renee Sterling returns after health crisis.”
And beside her…
was me.
Daniel Carter.
A man who repaired broken machines for a living.
The headlines were brutal.
“Unknown man appears beside billionaire heiress.”
“New mysterious partner?”
“Is Renee Sterling hiding something?”
I ignored all of it.
But Marcus didn’t.
Three days later, he appeared outside Renee’s mansion.
I saw him through the window.
A handsome man in an expensive suit.
Confident.
Perfect.
The kind of person who believed every problem had a price.
Renee watched him enter.
Her face became completely cold.
“That’s him.”
“The man who left you?”
She nodded.
“He will pretend he is worried.”
“And then?”
“He will try to find out what I know.”
Marcus walked into the room.
The moment he saw me, he stopped.
His expression changed.
Not jealousy.
Recognition.

“You.”
I frowned.
“You know me?”
Marcus smiled slightly.
“I’ve seen your name before.”
Renee immediately stepped between us.
“Leave.”
Marcus ignored her.
“Daniel Carter.”
He looked at me carefully.
“South Boston. Electrical repair shop. Daughter named Lily.”
My stomach tightened.
“How do you know that?”
His smile disappeared.
“Because people like me always know who is standing near important people.”
Renee’s eyes became colder.
“You threatened him?”
“No.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I’m warning you.”
“You’re making a mistake.”
I stepped forward.
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“Your mistake was thinking everyone could be bought.”
For the first time, Marcus looked uncertain.
Then he left.
But after the door closed, Renee became quiet.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“There is something I didn’t tell you.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She walked to the safe behind the painting.
Inside was a small box.
She opened it.
A DNA report.
A birth certificate.
And a photograph.
I picked up the photo.
It was Renee.
And a little girl.
I looked at her.
“You have a daughter?”
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Yes.”
“Then why is she not with you?”
Renee took a deep breath.
“Because Marcus told me she died.”
The room went silent.
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
“He told me our daughter didn’t survive.”
“But three months ago, I found evidence that he lied.”
I looked at the documents.
A child.
A hidden identity.
A missing inheritance.
Everything suddenly became bigger than a company takeover.
Renee looked at me.
“Daniel, I need you to understand something.”
“This was never just about Sterling Global.”
“Marcus isn’t trying to take my company.”
“He’s trying to erase my entire life.”
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I picked up.
A small girl’s voice came through.
“Are you Daniel?”
I froze.
“Who is this?”
The girl whispered:
“My mom said if anything happened to her, I should call you.”
I looked at Renee.
Her face had gone completely pale.
Because she recognized the voice.
Then the girl said the words that changed everything:
“Please help me.”
“Marcus found out I know the truth.”
