PART 2: THE DAUGHTER WHO STOPPED WAITING FOR HER FATHER

I stood in the middle of the school hallway, unable to move.

Sofia’s small hand was still holding Lucas’s.

Not mine.

His.

And for the first time in years, I realized there was a place in my daughter’s life where I no longer existed.

“Gabriel.”

Lucas’s voice brought me back.

He looked at me calmly.

Too calmly.

The old Lucas would have joked.

He would have patted my shoulder and said something sarcastic.

But the man standing in front of me now felt different.

Older.

Tired.

Like someone who had carried a burden alone for a long time.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

“Why is Sofia with you?”

Lucas looked at Sofia.

Then he looked at me.

“I think you already know.”

I frowned.

“No, I don’t.”

He sighed.

“That’s the problem, Gabriel.”

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

“Because you never knew.”

Those words hit me harder than I expected.

Sofia lowered her head.

She didn’t want to listen.

She had heard enough.

I took a step forward.

“Lucas, what are you talking about?”

He remained silent for several seconds.

Then he said:

“After your divorce, Elena had to work three jobs.”

My expression changed.

“What?”

“You didn’t know?”

I opened my mouth.

But no words came out.

Lucas continued.

“She didn’t tell you because she didn’t want your pity.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“She said you had already chosen another family. She didn’t want Sofia to grow up thinking she was begging her father for help.”

I looked at Sofia.

The girl who used to run toward me whenever I came home.

The girl who used to ask me to read bedtime stories.

The girl who once cried because I missed her school performance.

When did she stop asking me to come?

When did she learn not to expect me?

Lucas looked at me.

“I was there because someone had to be.”

My face turned pale.

“What do you mean?”

He looked away.

“When Elena got sick, she couldn’t pick Sofia up from school.”

My heart stopped.

“She called me.”

“Why didn’t she call me?”

Lucas gave me a strange look.

A look full of disappointment.

“Because she called you.”

Silence.

“Three times.”

I froze.

“Your phone was turned off.”

I tried to remember.

Those days.

The meetings.

The dinners with Clara.

The weekends I spent trying to build a new life.

Suddenly everything became blurry.

Lucas continued:

“After that, Sofia stopped asking about you.”

I looked at my daughter.

She stood there quietly.

Not angry.

Not crying.

Just distant.

That hurt more than anything.

Because anger meant she still cared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I whispered.

Lucas smiled sadly.

“Tell you what?”

“That your daughter needed you?”

He shook his head.

“You were too busy being a father to someone else’s child.”

My body froze.

Mateo.

The boy I had spent years raising.

The boy I proudly introduced to everyone.

The boy I thought needed me.

But my own daughter…

Had learned to live without me.

At that moment, my phone rang.

It was Clara.

I looked at the screen.

For the first time, I didn’t feel the warmth I used to feel.

I answered.

“Gabriel, where are you?”

Her voice sounded impatient.

“I need you to come home. Mateo has a problem with his project.”

I looked at Sofia.

Then at Lucas.

And suddenly I understood something painful.

I had spent years running toward a child who called me dad.

While ignoring the child who was actually my daughter.

“I can’t.”

There was silence on the other side.

“What do you mean?”

“I need to talk to Sofia.”

Clara’s voice changed.

“Gabriel…”

But I ended the call.

For once, I chose the person who had been waiting for me.

Even if she no longer waited anymore.

I walked toward Sofia slowly.

“Can we talk?”

She looked at Lucas.

He nodded gently.

Then she looked at me.

“About what?”

That simple question broke me.

Because once upon a time, my daughter would have asked:

“Dad, are you staying for dinner?”

“Dad, will you come to my school?”

“Dad, can we spend time together?”

Now she only asked:

“About what?”

I swallowed.

“About all the things I missed.”

Sofia was quiet.

Then she said something that made my heart fall apart.

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

I stared at her.

She continued softly:

“Because you weren’t there.”

Behind her, Lucas lowered his eyes.

And in that moment, I finally understood the truth.

I didn’t lose my daughter when I divorced Elena.

I lost her little by little…

Every day I chose not to come back.

And the most painful part was that someone else had been there to catch every moment I missed.

Someone my daughter now trusted more than me.

Someone she called…

Dad.
