PART 2: THE DAY I STOPPED WAITING FOR A WEDDING THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN

I thought the hardest moment of my life would be discovering Adrian loved another woman.

I was wrong.

The hardest moment was realizing that, for two years, I had been the only person still fighting for a future that he had already abandoned.

That night, after Adrian turned his back on me and fell asleep as if nothing had happened, I stayed awake until sunrise.

I didn’t cry.

I didn’t argue.

I didn’t ask him any more questions.

Because suddenly, every unanswered question had an answer.

The missed anniversaries.

The postponed wedding.

The endless business trips.

The way he always defended Vanessa before even listening to me.

It was never that he didn’t notice.

He noticed everything.

He just didn’t care enough to change.

The next morning, Adrian acted normal.

He walked into the kitchen, kissed my forehead, and smiled.

“Are you still upset about yesterday?”

I looked at him quietly.

For years, that question would have broken me.

Because it meant he didn’t understand my pain.

But that morning, I finally understood something.

He understood.

He simply believed I would always forgive him.

“I’m not upset anymore,” I said.

He looked surprised.

“Really?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

A satisfied smile appeared on his face.

“I knew you would understand eventually.”

Understand.

That word.

The same word he had used every time Vanessa appeared.

The same word he used when he wanted me to accept being second.

I smiled back.

“You’re right, Adrian. I finally understand.”

He didn’t notice the difference.

He didn’t see that something inside me had already closed.

For the next week, I played the role he expected.

I talked about furniture.

I discussed wedding colors.

I smiled when his mother asked about the ceremony.

But behind that smile, I was quietly preparing my exit.

Because Adrian had forgotten something important.

The woman who had supported him when he had nothing was not the same woman who would beg him to choose her after he found someone else.

I had helped him build his company.

I had introduced him to investors.

I had stayed beside him when everyone told me he would never succeed.

And now he thought I would leave with only a broken heart.

He didn’t know I had copies of every document.

Every investment.

Every contribution I made.

Especially the money he used to create the company that now made him feel untouchable.

Then, three days later, something unexpected happened.

I received a message from Vanessa.

“Claire, we need to talk.”

I almost ignored it.

But then another message appeared.

“I think you deserve to know the truth about Adrian.”

My fingers stopped.

The truth?

Wasn’t everything already obvious?

I agreed to meet her at a quiet cafe.

When Vanessa arrived, she was no longer the confident woman from the furniture showroom.

She looked nervous.

She sat across from me and placed her phone on the table.

“I know you hate me.”

I didn’t answer.

She swallowed.

“But you don’t know the whole story.”

I looked at her.

“Then tell me.”

She took a deep breath.

“Adrian didn’t accidentally forget to change that reservation note.”

My expression changed slightly.

“What?”

She looked down.

“The restaurant wasn’t my idea. He booked that table months ago.”

A cold feeling spread through me.

“He planned to take you there?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Silence.

“He planned to propose to me.”

For a few seconds, I couldn’t hear anything around me.

The cafe disappeared.

The sounds disappeared.

Only those words remained.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me that after the financing was completed, he would end your engagement.”

My hands tightened around my coffee cup.

“Then why tell me this?”

Her eyes became wet.

“Because I found out something else.”

She pushed a folder toward me.

Inside were printed messages.

Messages between Adrian and someone else.

Not me.

Not Vanessa.

Someone I had never heard of.

And the last message made my blood run cold.

“Once Claire signs the transfer papers, everything will be finished.”

I looked up.

“Transfer papers?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Adrian wasn’t waiting to marry me.”

She whispered.

“He was waiting to take control of everything you owned.”

My heart stopped.

Suddenly, the engagement ring on my finger felt heavier than ever.

The wedding.

The house.

The furniture.

The delays.

It wasn’t because he was busy.

It wasn’t because the company needed more time.

It was because he needed me to sign something.

Something that would leave me with nothing.

I slowly closed the folder.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“Why are you helping me?”

She looked away.

“Because I finally realized something.”

“What?”

Her voice became quiet.

“He never loved either of us.”

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.

It was Adrian.

A message appeared.

“Claire, my lawyer prepared the final documents for our house. Please sign them tomorrow. After this, we can finally start our future.”

I stared at the screen.

For two years, I waited for Adrian to choose me.

Tomorrow, I would give him the answer he had been waiting for.

But it wouldn’t be the answer he expected.

Because tomorrow, Adrian Walker was going to discover that the woman he thought he had already defeated…

had been preparing his downfall all along.
