The next morning, the Cross family woke up to a nightmare.
Not because of the canceled engagement.
Not because of the humiliation at the dinner.
But because the numbers had changed.
The Harbor One project, which everyone believed belonged to Cross Holdings, suddenly stopped moving.
The bank refused to release the next round of funding.
The investors who had always answered Julian’s calls stopped responding.
And the most terrifying part was that nobody could understand why.
Julian sat in his office, staring at the financial reports in front of him.
“How is this possible?”
His assistant lowered his head.
“Mr. Cross… the contracts were dependent on Vale Group’s guarantees.”
Julian’s expression darkened.
“Vale Group?”
He laughed coldly.
“My fiancée’s family has always needed us.”
The assistant hesitated.
“No.”
That single word made Julian look up.
“What did you say?”
“The reports show that for the past six years, Vale Group has been the main capital source behind several Cross Holdings projects.”
Silence.
Julian stopped breathing for a moment.
Impossible.
His entire life, he had believed his family was the one protecting Vale Group.
He believed Adriana Vale was lucky to marry into the Cross family.
But the truth was the opposite.
The Cross family had been standing on a foundation that Adriana’s father quietly provided.
And now she had removed that foundation.
“Find Adriana.”
His voice was no longer arrogant.
It was urgent.
But when Julian arrived at Vale Group, he discovered something worse.
Adriana was not hiding.
She was sitting in her office.
Reviewing documents.
Calm.
Focused.
As if the man who betrayed her had never existed.
Julian entered without knocking.
“Adriana.”
She didn’t raise her head.
“You don’t usually visit without an appointment.”
His jaw tightened.
“Why did you do this?”
She finally looked at him.
“Do what?”
“Destroy the agreement.”
“The agreement was destroyed when you brought another woman to my house and put my ring on her hand.”
Julian froze.
“That wasn’t what happened.”
Adriana smiled faintly.
“Then what was it?”
He opened his mouth.
But no words came.
Because every explanation sounded ridiculous.
It was just a misunderstanding.
It was just a television program.
It was just a moment.
But the ring on Celeste’s finger was real.
The humiliation was real.
And the years of disrespect were real.
“Adriana, we can fix this.”
She looked at him quietly.
For years, those words were what she wanted to hear.
She wanted him to choose her.
To fight for her.
To tell her she mattered.
But now that he finally said it…
It was too late.
“No.”
Julian’s face changed.
“No?”
“Four years ago, if you had said that, I would have believed you.”
She closed the folder in front of her.
“Three years ago, I would have forgiven you.”
“One year ago, I would have begged you to stay.”
She stood up.
“But today?”
“I don’t need a man who chooses me only after losing everything.”
Julian looked at her.
For the first time, he saw something he had never seen before.
Adriana wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t jealous.
She wasn’t trying to punish him.
She was simply done.
“Is this because of Celeste?”
“No.”
Her answer was immediate.
“It’s because of you.”
Julian’s fingers tightened.
“She means nothing to me.”
Adriana laughed softly.
A sad laugh.
“That’s the problem, Julian.”

“What?”
“You think the only reason I am leaving is because another woman exists.”
She walked toward the window.
“But the truth is…”
“You made me feel alone long before she appeared.”
The room became silent.
Julian remembered every moment he ignored her calls.
Every dinner he canceled.
Every time Celeste’s name appeared on his phone and he turned away from Adriana.
He always thought Adriana would stay.
Because she always had.
Until she didn’t.
That afternoon, Celeste came to Cross Holdings.
She was still wearing the engagement ring.
But this time, nobody looked at her with admiration.
Julian saw her and immediately asked:
“Take it off.”
Celeste froze.
“What?”
“The ring.”
Her expression changed.
“But you gave it to me.”
“No.”
His voice was cold.
“I stole it from someone else.”
For the first time, Celeste looked afraid.
“Julian…”
He ignored her.
Because he finally understood something.
The ring was never the most valuable thing he lost.
The person who gave him that ring was.
That night, Julian returned to the house where the engagement dinner happened.
The same place where he humiliated Adriana.
The table was still there.
The chandelier was still shining.
But everything felt different.
On the table was a small box.
Inside was the original engagement ring.
Adriana had returned it.
Along with a note.
Only one sentence was written:
“You didn’t lose me because another woman came back.”
“You lost me because you never chose me when I was here.”
Julian held the note for a long time.
For the first time in his life, the man who always believed he controlled every outcome felt powerless.
Because Adriana Vale had not taken revenge.
She had simply removed herself.
And that was far more painful.
But Julian still didn’t know the final truth.
The engagement ring wasn’t the only thing Adriana had prepared to take back.
The next morning, the board of Vale Group would announce a decision that would change both families forever.
And this time…
Julian Cross would be the one standing outside, watching someone else close the door.
