PART 2: THE GENERAL WHO HAD TO ASK FOR MY HELP

The room was still laughing.

They laughed because they remembered the woman who left ten years ago.

The woman who cried silently.

The woman who walked away without fighting.

The woman they believed had lost everything.

But they didn’t know something.

The Elena Moore who returned was not the same person who left.

I gently removed my wrist from the man’s hand.

Not violently.

Not angrily.

Just enough.

And the moment I moved, his expression changed.

Because he realized something.

I wasn’t afraid.

“Let go of her.”

The voice came from behind me.

Adrian.

The entire room became silent.

The man holding my wrist immediately released me.

“General, I was just joking.”

Adrian’s expression was cold.

“Is that what you call humiliating a guest in my grandfather’s house?”

Nobody answered.

For the first time that night, Adrian wasn’t looking at me like a memory.

He was looking at me like someone he had underestimated.

I picked up my medical bag.

“Don’t worry, General Cross.”

My voice was calm.

“I can handle myself.”

The words made him freeze.

Because ten years ago, he had never heard me speak that way.

Back then, I was always explaining.

Always asking.

Always trying to prove that I was worth choosing.

Now I didn’t need anyone to choose me.

Especially not him.

I turned around and left.

Behind me, Vanessa’s voice followed.

“Adrian, don’t tell me you’re feeling guilty.”

I stopped for a second.

Not because of her.

Because I wanted to know if he would defend her.

Like before.

Like ten years ago.

But Adrian didn’t answer.

And that silence was different.

The next morning, I entered the operating room.

General Cross was already prepared.

The legendary commander who had led countless missions.

A man respected by thousands.

But inside that room, he was only a patient.

And I was only his surgeon.

No past.

No emotions.

No revenge.

Just responsibility.

The surgery lasted nine hours.

Nine hours where every decision mattered.

Every movement.

Every second.

When I finally stepped out, the waiting area was full.

Adrian was there.

Vanessa was there.

The entire Cross family was there.

Everyone stood when they saw me.

“Doctor Moore.”

One of the assistants approached.

“The surgery was successful.”

A wave of relief passed through the room.

Adrian looked at me.

For the first time, there was no arrogance in his eyes.

Only disbelief.

“You saved him.”

I looked at him.

“That was my job.”

His lips moved slightly.

“After everything…”

I interrupted him.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“Don’t turn my profession into a favor you can repay.”

The hallway became silent.

Because everyone understood.

I wasn’t the woman who came back hoping for an apology.

I was the person they needed.

Nothing more.

General Cross woke up two days later.

His first request was to see me.

When I entered the room, he looked at me for a long time.

“Elena Moore.”

I nodded.

“General.”

He smiled weakly.

“You became exactly what I thought you would become.”

I was surprised.

“What do you mean?”

He looked toward Adrian standing outside the door.

“Ten years ago, my grandson was a fool.”

Nobody spoke.

“He had the rarest treasure in front of him and thought it was replaceable.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

I remained silent.

General Cross continued:

“I told him back then.”

“One day, he would meet you again.”

“And when that happened…”

“He would finally understand what he lost.”

I didn’t answer.

Because understanding came too late.

After leaving the hospital, I received a video call.

My daughter appeared on the screen.

“Mom!”

My expression softened immediately.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

“Are you coming home soon?”

“Yes.”

Behind her, my husband appeared.

“Everything okay?”

I smiled.

“Everything is fine.”

When I ended the call, I noticed Adrian watching me.

“You have a family.”

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

His face changed slightly.

“You married?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Are you happy?”

I looked at him.

That question was strange.

Because ten years ago, I would have answered based on whether he loved me.

Now the answer had nothing to do with him.

“Yes.”

Simple.

Honest.

Complete.

Adrian looked away.

For the first time, I saw regret.

Real regret.

Not the kind that appears when someone loses control.

The kind that appears when someone realizes they destroyed something they can never rebuild.

That evening, he found me outside the hospital.

“Elena.”

I stopped.

“What?”

He stood there quietly.

The famous General Cross.

The man everyone respected.

But in front of me, he looked like the young man who watched me walk away ten years ago.

“I was wrong.”

I said nothing.

“I thought Vanessa needed me.”

A bitter smile appeared on my face.

“No.”

“You thought I would always wait.”

He didn’t deny it.

Because it was true.

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I destroyed what we had.”

“Yes.”

His eyes became red.

“But I never stopped…”

I interrupted him.

“Don’t say you never stopped loving me.”

He froze.

“Because love without respect is just selfishness.”

The words hit him harder than anger.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He looked at the screen.

Ten years ago, he would have answered immediately.

Everyone waited.

I watched quietly.

Finally…

Adrian turned the phone off.

Not for me.

Not to prove anything.

Because for the first time, he was making a choice without using someone else as an excuse.

But it was too late.

The next morning, I prepared to leave the military hospital.

Before I got into the car, Adrian appeared.

He held an old box.

I recognized it immediately.

My old medical badge.

The one I lost ten years ago.

“I kept this.”

I looked at it.

“Why?”

His voice was low.

“Because even when I chose someone else…”

“You were still the person I couldn’t forget.”

I closed the box and handed it back.

“Keep it.”

His eyes lifted.

“You don’t want it?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Because I already found something better.”

“What?”

I smiled.

“Myself.”

Then I left.

And behind me, Adrian Cross finally understood the truth.

The woman he abandoned ten years ago was not waiting for him to return.

She was already living the life he was no longer part of.

But just as I thought everything was over…

a confidential military file appeared on my desk.

The title made me stop breathing.

“Operation Cross.”

And underneath it…

my name.

Because ten years ago, Adrian hadn’t only broken my heart.

He had hidden the real reason he let me go.
