PART 2: THE GENERAL WHO LOST EVERYTHING HE THOUGHT HE COULD CONTROL

I never looked back at the bullet train station.

Not because I wasn’t hurt.

Because I had spent five years looking back.

Five years waiting for a man who had already chosen another life.

When I arrived home that night, I placed the old military documents on the table.

The same documents that contained every sacrifice I had made for Julián’s family.

The hospital bills.

The transfers.

The medical records.

Everything I had carried alone while everyone told me to be patient.

Then I played the recording from his father.

The old colonel’s weak voice filled the room.

“Julián is not on a northern mission…”

“He left because he chose another woman.”

“He asked me to hide the truth.”

My hands trembled.

Not because I was surprised.

Because hearing it aloud finally gave me permission to stop defending him.

The next morning, my lawyer contacted the Ministry of Defense.

The investigation began immediately.

Julián Salazar had not disappeared because of a secret mission.

He had disappeared because he wanted to escape his responsibilities.

The documents showed inconsistencies.

The mission order had never existed.

The military funds assigned to his operation had been moved through private accounts.

And the woman listed as a protected witness…

was Jimena.

My best friend.

The woman who had cried with me every night after Julián vanished.

The woman who told me:

“Renata, if he loves you, he will come back.”

I laughed when I remembered those words.

Because she had known exactly where he was.

Days later, Julián came to find me.

Not as a general.

Not as the powerful officer everyone feared.

As a desperate man.

He stood outside my apartment for hours before I opened the door.

“Renata.”

I looked at him.

He looked older.

Tired.

Broken.

“You reported me.”

“No.”

I corrected him calmly.

“You reported yourself.”

His expression collapsed.

“I didn’t betray you.”

I almost smiled.

“You disappeared for five years.”

“I buried your father.”

“I sold my things to pay for his treatment.”

“I lived like a stranger while you built another life.”

His eyes turned red.

“I was protecting you.”

“No, Julián.”

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.”

He stepped closer.

“I thought if I came back, we could start again.”

I looked at him.

“Start again?”

“With what?”

“Your lies?”

“Your other family?”

His face changed.

“She is not my family.”

I stared at him.

“Then why did you stand in front of her?”

Silence.

Because that was the question he couldn’t answer.

He had always been a hero to everyone else.

But when it mattered most…

he had protected the person who betrayed me.

Not me.

A week later, Jimena came to my door.

She was no longer wearing expensive jewelry.

No designer clothes.

No perfect smile.

She looked frightened.

“Renata…”

I didn’t invite her inside.

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing him.”

I laughed softly.

“You lost your friend first.”

She lowered her head.

“I loved him.”

“And I loved you.”

That sentence made her cry.

But I felt nothing.

Some betrayals hurt so much that eventually they become empty.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Julián never knew the whole truth.”

I frowned.

“What truth?”

She looked at me.

“The girl at the station…”

My heart stopped.

“The girl is not my daughter.”

I froze.

“What?”

Jimena swallowed.

“She is my sister’s child.”

“Julián believed he was protecting her because he promised a fallen soldier he would take care of his family.”

I stayed silent.

For the first time, doubt appeared.

Not forgiveness.

Never forgiveness.

But doubt.

Because maybe Julián’s biggest crime was not what I thought.

Maybe it was that he had allowed lies to grow until they destroyed everyone around him.

That night, I received a message.

From Julián.

Only one sentence.

“Come to the hospital.”

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But something made me go.

When I arrived, I saw him sitting outside an emergency room.

His uniform was gone.

His rank was gone.

Only a tired man remained.

“What happened?”

He looked up.

“The Ministry found everything.”

I said nothing.

“They are taking my position.”

A long silence passed.

Then he whispered:

“Renata…”

“I finally understand.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“The person I spent five years protecting…”

“was never the person I should have protected.”

My heart tightened.

But I didn’t move.

Because regret comes too late when someone destroys the only person who would have forgiven them.

Then the emergency room door opened.

A doctor walked out.

“Mr. Salazar?”

Julián stood immediately.

“There is someone here asking for you.”

He looked confused.

“Who?”

The doctor glanced at the file.

“Your wife.”

My blood froze.

Because I had never signed a divorce.

And apparently…

neither had Julián.

The woman inside the room wasn’t Jimena.

It wasn’t me.

It was someone whose name would reveal the biggest secret behind Julián Salazar’s disappearance.
