Part 2: The House He Thought He Owned

Daniel caught my arm before I could open the front door.

“Sofía, wait.”

I looked down at his hand.

Then I looked at him.

Slowly, he let go.

For four years, I had waited for Daniel to choose me.

During my pregnancy, I waited when he came home late because his mother needed something.

After giving birth, I waited when he said he was “too tired” to wake up with the baby.

Every time someone in his family needed help, I waited for him to remember that I was his wife.

But standing there with my daughter in my arms, I finally understood.

He wasn’t forgetting.

He was choosing.

“Sofía, we need to talk.”

“We already talked.”

“No, you gave me an ultimatum.”

I almost smiled.

“An ultimatum?”

“Yes. You’re making me choose between my family and you.”

I stared at him.

“Daniel, I am your family.”

That sentence made him silent.

Because somewhere along the way, he had forgotten.

His mother.

His sister.

Their problems.

Their emergencies.

Those were always treated as important.

But me?

I was the person expected to endure quietly.

“I never asked you to abandon them,” I said.

“I know.”

“I asked you to stop abandoning me.”

He looked away.

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

Not because my baby cried.

Because I had already made my decision.

I packed everything I needed.

My daughter’s clothes.

Her documents.

My personal belongings.

Then I walked into the kitchen.

Daniel was sitting there.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

“Are you really leaving?”

“Yes.”

“Because of this?”

“No.”

I placed the baby bag on the table.

“Because of everything.”

He rubbed his face.

“Sofía, my mother didn’t mean anything bad.”

“That’s what you always say.”

“She’s just old-fashioned.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“She’s comfortable.”

Daniel frowned.

“What’s the difference?”

“The difference is that old-fashioned people don’t realize they hurt others.”

I looked directly at him.

“Your mother knows exactly what she’s doing. She just knows you will allow it.”

His face changed.

Because that was the truth.

An hour later, Margaret arrived.

She didn’t knock.

She never did.

She walked in carrying grocery bags.

“Daniel, I thought about it. Melissa needs help for at least two weeks.”

Then she saw my suitcase.

Her expression immediately hardened.

“What is this?”

I answered calmly.

“I’m leaving.”

She laughed.

“You’re leaving? After everything this family has done for you?”

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Everything?”

“Yes. We accepted you into our family.”

I looked around the house.

The house I had helped pay for.

The house where I cooked, cleaned, and created a home.

Then I said:

“Actually, Margaret, there’s something you should know.”

She stopped.

Daniel looked confused.

I took a folder from my bag.

“Do you remember when Daniel said his salary wasn’t enough for the mortgage?”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Sofía…”

“No.”

I opened the folder.

“For three years, I paid more than half of this mortgage.”

Margaret looked at the documents.

“You helped.”

“I paid.”

Silence.

“The down payment came from my savings.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

I continued.

“The renovations were paid with my money.”

Margaret looked at her son.

“Is this true?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I took another document from the folder.

“And according to the property agreement, my name is on the house.”

Margaret froze.

“What?”

“This house isn’t yours to control.”

Her face turned red.

“You’re threatening us?”

“No.”

I picked up my daughter.

“I’m informing you.”

Daniel stood.

“Sofía, can we fix this?”

I looked at him.

“Do you want to fix it because you finally understand?”

He didn’t answer.

“Or because you realized the person paying for this family is leaving?”

His silence hurt more than any argument.

Because again.

He needed to lose something before he valued it.

I walked toward the door.

Margaret suddenly stepped forward.

“You can’t take my granddaughter away.”

I stopped.

Then slowly turned around.

“She is my daughter.”

“She is Daniel’s child.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Daniel.

“And that means he should have protected us.”

No one spoke.

I left.

For the first time in four years, I closed a door behind me without wondering if someone would open it for me.

Two weeks later, I was living in a small apartment near my sister.

My daughter had her own room.

I had finally started healing.

Then Daniel appeared outside my door.

His face looked exhausted.

“Sofía.”

I didn’t invite him in.

“What happened?”

He swallowed.

“Mom and Melissa had a fight.”

I waited.

“She found out the house wasn’t hers.”

“And?”

“She told everyone you had been paying for years.”

I looked at him.

“And now?”

He looked down.

“Now everyone knows.”

I nodded.

But then Daniel said something unexpected.

“Your mother-in-law wasn’t the only problem.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

He handed me an envelope.

Inside was a bank statement.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

There were monthly transfers.

Money leaving our account.

Going to Margaret.

For years.

I looked up.

“Daniel…”

His voice was low.

“I didn’t know.”

I stared at him.

“You didn’t know your own mother was taking money from us?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Then he showed me the last page.

A signature.

Not his.

Not mine.

But the authorization was linked to my account.

My heart sank.

“Who signed this?”

Daniel looked terrified.

Because he already knew.

“Sofía…”

I looked at the name.

And suddenly everything made sense.

The reason Margaret always acted like she owned our home.

The reason Daniel never questioned her.

The reason she was so confident I would never leave.

Because someone had convinced her she had the right.

And the person who gave her that power…

was the one person I never expected.
