PART 2: THE HUSBAND WHO REALIZED HE HAD ALREADY LOST ME

Ethan stood in the middle of the living room, staring at me as if he was seeing a stranger.

“What does that mean?”

I picked up my bag.

“It means tomorrow you will receive the divorce papers.”

For a few seconds, he didn’t move.

Then he laughed.

Not because he found it funny.

Because he didn’t believe me.

“Amelia, you’re angry. You’re pregnant. You’re letting your emotions control you.”

I looked at him quietly.

That sentence was exactly why I made my decision.

Even now, he still didn’t think I was hurt.

He thought I was being irrational.

He thought I was just another problem he needed to calm down.

“I spent three months making excuses for you,” I said softly.

Ethan’s expression changed slightly.

“I told myself you were stressed. I told myself you were adjusting. I told myself that one day you would look at me the way you used to.”

I touched my stomach.

“But tonight I realized something.”

“What?”

“You didn’t become a different person after marriage.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You just stopped pretending.”

The room became silent.

Ethan took a step forward.

“Amelia, don’t do this.”

Before, those words would have made me hesitate.

Not anymore.

“Don’t do what?”

“Destroy our marriage over something Olivia said while she was drunk?”

I smiled.

“That’s what you think this is about?”

“Yes.”

“No, Ethan.”

I shook my head.

“This is about the fact that when someone insulted my character, questioned my loyalty, and accused me of carrying another man’s child…”

I paused.

“You sat there and let her do it.”

His face tightened.

“I didn’t believe her.”

“Then why didn’t you say anything?”

Silence.

Because there was no answer.

A man who loved his wife didn’t need time to decide whether to defend her.

He just did.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“I was shocked.”

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

“You were shocked.”

“You were thinking.”

“You were analyzing.”

“And while you were deciding what you believed, I was standing outside that door listening to the person I loved stay silent.”

He looked away.

For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.

I walked toward the bedroom.

Behind me, Ethan spoke.

“Where are you going?”

“To sleep.”

“Here?”

I stopped.

Then I looked back.

“For tonight.”

His eyes softened slightly, as if he thought there was still hope.

But he didn’t know.

The next morning, everything would change.

At 8:00 a.m., my lawyer sent the final divorce documents.

At 8:30 a.m., I went to the hospital for the medical procedure I had scheduled.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Not because I wanted to punish Ethan.

But because I needed to make a decision about my own future without being trapped by a marriage where trust had already disappeared.

When I came out of the hospital, my phone was filled with missed calls.

Twenty-three from Ethan.

Five from Olivia.

One message from Ethan.

“Please answer me. We need to talk.”

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

“I spoke with Olivia.”

I almost ignored it.

But then the next words appeared.

“She admitted she lied.”

I stopped.

A few seconds later, another message.

“She said she only wanted to warn me about you because she was jealous.”

I closed my eyes.

So now he knew.

Now, after I had already walked away.

I replied with only one sentence.

“I needed you to believe me before someone else admitted they were wrong.”

The reply came immediately.

“Amelia, please. Don’t throw away everything we built.”

I looked at those words for a long time.

Everything we built.

That was the problem.

I built.

I waited.

I trusted.

But when I needed him to stand beside me, he chose silence.

I put my phone away.

Three days later, Ethan came to my apartment.

He looked exhausted.

No expensive suit.

No confident expression.

Just a man who finally realized something was slipping away.

“I know I made a mistake.”

I didn’t answer.

“I should have defended you.”

Still nothing.

“I should have trusted you.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

His eyes turned red.

“Can you forgive me?”

I remained silent.

Because forgiveness was not the same as returning.

Then Ethan noticed the folder on the table.

The divorce papers.

And beside them…

A document from the hospital.

His face changed.

“Amelia…”

He picked it up.

His hands started shaking.

“Did you really…”

I gently took the papers back.

“Ethan.”

He looked at me.

“This marriage ended the night you heard someone question me and decided silence was safer than standing with your wife.”

He wanted to say something.

But before he could…

His phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

The name made his face completely change.

Olivia Moore.

He answered reluctantly.

But after only a few seconds, his expression turned pale.

Because Olivia wasn’t calling to apologize.

She was calling because she had a secret that would change everything Ethan believed about the past.

And when Ethan heard the truth…

He finally understood that the person he should have trusted was the one he had already lost.
