PART 2: THE MAN WHO THOUGHT I WOULD KEEP WAITING

Five years.

That was how long Adrian Hale had to forget my name.

Five years to move on.

Five years to believe that the night on the mountain was just a moment of cruelty that would eventually disappear.

Five years to believe that the woman he left behind was still the same.

But Elena Winter no longer existed.

I buried her the day I boarded that flight to Switzerland.

The girl who waited for someone to defend her.

The fiancée who believed love meant enduring everything.

The daughter who tried to satisfy the expectations of a family that never truly chose her.

They all stayed in the past.

When Adrian arrived at the Limmat River, I already knew he was there.

Not because I was looking for him.

Because after five years, I had learned to recognize danger before seeing it.

He stood beside the water.

The same man.

The same perfect face.

The same confidence.

But something had changed.

He no longer affected me.

Adrian saw me and froze.

For a few seconds, he looked like he didn’t recognize me.

Not because I looked different.

Because he expected to find the woman he had destroyed.

Instead, he found someone who no longer needed him.

“Elena.”

No one had said that name with his voice for years.

I didn’t answer.

He stepped closer.

“I knew you would come.”

I almost smiled.

How strange.

After five years, he still spoke as if he could predict my choices.

As if he still had power over me.

“You were wrong.”

His expression shifted slightly.

“I need to talk to you.”

“No.”

It was a simple answer.

But to Adrian, it seemed impossible.

“After everything that happened…”

I interrupted him.

“Don’t say ‘what happened.’”

His mouth closed.

“What happened wasn’t an accident.”

“It was a choice.”

The wind moved through my hair.

And for the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

“Elena, I was young.”

I looked at him.

“You were twenty-seven.”

Silence.

“You weren’t a child.”

Every word came out calmly.

Because I was no longer speaking from pain.

I was speaking from distance.

“You released private photographs.”

“You humiliated me in front of the entire city.”

“You made everyone believe I was the problem while you were with Chloe.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

That gesture would have worked before.

Before I learned that some people only regret things after they lose them.

“I didn’t come here to justify myself.”

“Then why did you come?”

For the first time, he hesitated.

And that hesitation confirmed something.

Adrian didn’t come to Switzerland because he understood my pain.

He came because something in his own life had changed.

“My grandfather died.”

I didn’t react.

“I’m sorry.”

He looked at me.

“Before he died, he left me a letter.”

I became still.

Because Grandpa Hale was the only person in that family who had believed me.

“What did it say?”

Adrian clenched his jaw.

“He knew the truth.”

Silence.

“He knew the photos were leaked from my camera.”

“He knew Chloe was involved.”

“He knew my family tried to blame you.”

For the first time, I saw something close to shame in his eyes.

But it came too late.

“And now what?”

Adrian took a deep breath.

“Now I know I destroyed the only person who truly loved me.”

I looked at him.

And I felt something strange.

Not happiness.

Not satisfaction.

Nothing.

Because the revenge I imagined for years never came.

When someone breaks you deeply enough, there comes a moment when seeing them suffer no longer matters.

“Adrian.”

He raised his head.

“Yes?”

“You didn’t destroy the only person who loved you.”

I paused.

“You destroyed the only person who still trusted you.”

His expression changed.

As if that difference hurt more.

Then he took something from his pocket.

A small ring.

My old engagement ring.

I recognized it immediately.

“I kept it all these years.”

I didn’t take it.

“It’s not mine.”

Adrian frowned.

“It was yours.”

I slowly shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at the ring.

“It belonged to Elena Winters.”

“The woman who waited for you to become someone better.”

“She’s gone.”

The silence between us lasted a long time.

Finally, Adrian asked:

“Is there any chance?”

The question was almost a whisper.

Five years ago, I would have given anything to hear those words.

Now, they only sounded sad.

“No.”

He closed his eyes.

As if he had expected every answer except that one.

“Why?”

I looked directly at him.

“Because forgiving you doesn’t mean coming back to you.”

“And because the person I am now was born the moment you decided to lose me.”

I turned around.

But before I walked away, Adrian said something that made me stop.

“Chloe never loved you as a sister.”

I wasn’t surprised.

But I turned back.

He continued.

“She knew about the photos.”

“She helped make them public.”

My expression changed for the first time.

Not because of Adrian.

Because of the confirmation.

For five years, a part of me wondered if I had been naive.

If I had imagined the betrayal.

Now I had the answer.

That night, Adrian didn’t just come to apologize.

He came to open a door that had been locked for five years.

And behind that door was the truth my family had tried to bury.

The next day, I received a message from an unknown number.

It only said:

“Your sister wants to see you. She says she needs to explain why she did it.”

I stared at the screen for several seconds.

Then I smiled.

Because Chloe didn’t know something important.

I was no longer the Elena she destroyed.

I was the woman who survived her.

And this time…

she would be the one facing the consequences.
