I couldn’t move.
Garrett had tried to kill me.
My own husband.
The man who kissed my forehead every morning.
The man who held my hand in front of everyone and promised he would protect me.
But the person who saved me was the brother I thought had been broken for fifteen years.
Tobias sat against the concrete pillar, breathing heavily.
For the first time in my life, I saw him standing.
Not in a wheelchair.
Not needing help.
Standing like the man he had always been.
“Start talking,” I whispered.
He looked away.
“I wasn’t paralyzed.”
The words hurt more than I expected.
“Fifteen years, Tobias.”
“Fifteen years I watched you struggle.”
“I watched you pretend you couldn’t even walk.”
His eyes turned red.
“Because every time I tried to tell the truth, someone was watching.”
I froze.
“Who?”
He looked toward the dark river.
“The same people who caused our parents’ accident.”
My heart sank.
I remembered that night.
The car crash.
The fire.
The official report saying it was a mechanical failure.
The accident that took away our parents and changed Tobias forever.
Except now…
Everything I believed was wrong.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you were next.”
His voice became low.
“When our parents died, I found documents proving someone had been moving money from the shipyard.”
“Our father discovered it.”
“And before he could expose them, he died.”
I felt cold.
“Garrett’s father?”
Tobias didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
I covered my mouth.
“No…”
“He approached you because of the shipyard.”
“He married you because your family owned the controlling shares.”
Every memory came rushing back.
The way Garrett insisted on helping with family business.
The way he always asked about contracts.
The way he convinced me that he only wanted to support my dreams.
It had all been an act.
“Then why didn’t you stop me from marrying him?”
Tobias closed his eyes.
“Because by the time I discovered the truth, you were already in love.”
“And I thought I could protect you.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“You protected me by pretending to be disabled?”
“Yes.”
“Because nobody pays attention to a man they think cannot walk.”
Silence filled the space between us.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
From Garrett.
I opened it.
“Rosalind, where are you? The rescue team hasn’t found you yet.”
My blood froze.
He was pretending.
Pretending to look for me.
Pretending to be worried.
Tobias saw my expression.
“He doesn’t know we survived.”

I looked at him.
“Then we use that.”
For the first time that night, Tobias smiled.
A cold, determined smile I had never seen before.
“Exactly.”
“But before we expose him, you need to know one more thing.”
“What?”
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“Garrett wasn’t working alone.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who else?”
Tobias looked directly at me.
“The person who gave him information about the shipyard.”
“The person who knew your schedule.”
“The person who knew exactly where you would be tonight.”
A terrible feeling rose in my chest.
“Tell me.”
Tobias took out his hidden waterproof phone.
On the screen was a photo.
A conversation.
A name.
And when I saw it…
I felt like the river had swallowed me all over again.
Because the person helping Garrett destroy my family…
Was someone I had trusted more than anyone.
My own sister.
Penelope.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
The last message she sent Garrett was only three hours before the accident.
It said:
“After tonight, Rosalind will have nothing left.”
I stared at the screen.
Then Tobias whispered:
“Now we know why they wanted you dead.”
And for the first time…
I wasn’t afraid of losing my marriage.
I was ready to destroy everyone who had tried to erase me.
