Part 2: THE SECRET UNDER THE GUEST ROOM MATTRESS.

My fingers touched something cold and flat beneath the mattress.

For a second, I thought it was just an old book or a forgotten piece of clothing. But when I pulled it out, my hands started shaking.

It was a thick brown envelope.

No name.

No label.

Just my guest room key number written on the front in Eleanor’s handwriting.

I stared at it for several seconds, unable to understand what I was seeing.

Why would my mother-in-law hide an envelope under the mattress in the room she had been living in for six months?

I almost called Thomas immediately.

But something stopped me.

Maybe it was the way Eleanor had always insisted on handling everything herself. Maybe it was the fact that she had been unusually nervous the last few days before leaving. Or maybe it was the strange feeling in my stomach telling me that whatever was inside this envelope was something she never wanted us to find.

I opened it carefully.

The first thing I saw was a stack of photographs.

My heart dropped.

They weren’t pictures of Eleanor and her husband.

They weren’t family memories.

They were pictures of my house.

The first photo showed the outside of our home.

The second showed the guest room window.

The third showed my office.

I flipped through them faster, my breathing becoming heavier.

There were notes attached to several pictures.

Dates.

Times.

Observations.

“She leaves for work at 7:45.”

“Thomas usually gets home after 6.”

“Security camera faces driveway only.”

I froze.

Why was my mother-in-law documenting our daily routine?

I kept digging through the envelope, hoping there was some reasonable explanation.

Then I found a folded piece of paper.

The handwriting wasn’t Eleanor’s.

It was Thomas’s.

My husband’s.

I read the first sentence, and suddenly the room felt like it was spinning.

“Mom, I need you to keep this safe until I’m ready to tell her.”

I stopped breathing for a moment.

My husband knew about this.

I kept reading.

“She can’t know yet. If she finds out too early, everything will fall apart.”

My hands went numb.

For six months, I had welcomed his parents into my home. I cooked for them, gave them privacy, adjusted my entire routine for them.

And now I was standing in the room they had occupied, holding proof that my own husband had been hiding something from me.

I heard the front door open downstairs.

“Hey, I’m home!” Thomas called.

I quickly shoved everything back into the envelope, but I didn’t put it under the mattress again.

I carried it with me.

When he walked into the hallway, he smiled.

“How’s the cleaning going?”

I looked at him.

Really looked at him.

The man I had trusted for years.

The man who held my hand when my father passed away.

The man who promised me we would always tell each other the truth.

“Thomas,” I said quietly. “Why did your mother have an envelope hidden under the mattress?”

The color drained from his face.

He didn’t ask what envelope.

He didn’t ask what I meant.

He already knew.

That was the moment I realized this wasn’t a misunderstanding.

This was a secret.

A secret both of them had been carrying right in front of me.

Thomas slowly closed the distance between us.

“Where did you find that?”

Not “what was inside?”

Not “what are you talking about?”

Where did you find that.

I stepped back.

“Why does your mother have pictures of my house?”

His expression changed.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Listen to me,” he said. “You need to let me explain before you make any assumptions.”

I laughed softly because I couldn’t believe those were his first words.

“Assumptions? Thomas, there are photos of my home with notes about my schedule.”

He ran a hand through his hair.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.”

“Find out what?”

He looked toward the staircase, like he was making sure nobody else was there.

Then he whispered:

“My parents weren’t really staying here because of the house repairs.”

The silence that followed was unbearable.

I felt my entire body go cold.

“What do you mean?”

Thomas looked down.

“They came here because they were trying to protect you.”

I stared at him.

“Protect me from what?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached for the envelope in my hand.

But I pulled it away.

And then he said something that made every strange moment from the past six months suddenly make sense.

“Eleanor wasn’t watching you.”

He swallowed hard.

“She was watching someone who was watching you.”

I felt a chill run through me.

Because suddenly, the locked guest room door, the secret notes, and the hidden envelope weren’t the most terrifying part.

The terrifying part was realizing my in-laws hadn’t been hiding something from me.

They had been hiding something for me.

And whoever they were afraid of was still out there.
