PART 2: THE TRUTH ADRIAN NEVER EXPECTED TO DISCOVER

Adrian called seventeen more times that night.

I didn’t answer a single one.

For the first time in three years, I didn’t feel the need to explain myself.

The old me would have answered.

I would have cried.

I would have told him about my mother.

About the hospital.

About the baby we lost.

I would have begged him to understand.

But what was the point?

He had already decided who I was before knowing the truth.

A gold digger.

A woman who wanted his money.

A person worth testing.

So I let him believe whatever he wanted.

The next morning, I returned to my mother’s house.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Her shoes were still by the door.

Her favorite cup was still on the kitchen table.

A half-finished knitting project remained beside the sofa.

Everything looked as if she would come back at any moment.

But she wouldn’t.

Because while Adrian was playing a cruel game to prove my love wasn’t real…

My mother was fighting to stay alive.

And I had lost the last chance to tell her goodbye.

I sat there for hours.

Not crying.

Just empty.

Then the door opened.

My father walked in.

The moment he saw me, he understood.

He didn’t ask.

He simply hugged me.

And for the first time since that night…

I broke down.

Not because of Adrian.

Not because of Sophia.

Because my mother was gone.

The woman who believed in me when nobody else did.

The woman who told me:

“Never let anyone make you feel like you have to earn love.”

And I had forgotten her words.

I had spent years proving myself to a man who was already looking for reasons to doubt me.

Three days later, the divorce papers arrived at Adrian’s office.

His assistant called me.

“Mrs. Foster…”

I corrected her.

“Miss.”

There was a long silence.

Then she said:

“Mr. Foster refused to sign.”

I wasn’t surprised.

“Why?”

“He said he needs to talk to you.”

I looked at the hospital bracelet still around my wrist.

“No.”

“But…”

“I have nothing left to discuss.”

That afternoon, Adrian came to my mother’s house.

He looked exhausted.

Not like the confident man who had accused me.

Like someone who had finally realized he destroyed something he couldn’t repair.

“Elena.”

I didn’t invite him in.

“Why are you here?”

He looked at me.

“I know about your mother.”

Silence.

“I know about the baby.”

My fingers tightened.

“So?”

His eyes became red.

“I didn’t know.”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“You didn’t want to know.”

That sentence hurt him.

Because it was true.

He lowered his head.

“The five hundred thousand…”

“I know.”

“I thought…”

“You thought I wanted money.”

He couldn’t answer.

I smiled sadly.

“Do you know what hurts the most?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Not that you betrayed me.”

“Not even that you were with Sophia.”

“The worst part is that you created a test because you already believed I was guilty.”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no defense.

I had loved him when he had nothing.

I had stayed when everyone told me I was foolish.

I had carried his burdens.

And he rewarded me by trying to prove I was exactly the kind of person who would leave him.

Then my phone rang.

It was the hospital.

I answered.

After a few seconds, my expression changed.

Adrian noticed.

“What happened?”

I looked at him.

“The doctor found something.”

His face tightened.

“What?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I had spent days believing the tragedy ended that night.

But it hadn’t.

The doctor had reviewed my medical records.

And there was something wrong.

Something nobody had noticed.

Something connected to the accident.

I looked at Adrian.

“The hospital wants to talk to both of us.”

“Why?”

I held the phone tighter.

“Because the pregnancy loss wasn’t only caused by stress.”

His face turned pale.

“What does that mean?”

I looked away.

“It means someone may have known about my pregnancy.”

“And someone may have wanted me to lose it.”

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Because suddenly, the cruel wedding night wasn’t the only secret.

The five hundred thousand wasn’t the only lie.

And Sophia’s little game…

May have been hiding something much darker.

For the first time since I left him, Adrian looked afraid.

Not because he lost his wife.

But because he finally understood…

Someone had been playing a game with both of us.
