PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO BUILT STERLING INDUSTRIES

The next morning, at exactly nine o’clock, Ethan arrived at Sterling Industries expecting another negotiation.

He thought I was angry.

He thought I was trying to scare him.

He thought, after ten years of marriage, he still knew exactly how far I would go.

He was wrong.

When he entered the conference room, he found not only the legal team waiting for him, but also representatives from Hayes Group.

My father had built Hayes Group from nothing.

For years, people assumed Sterling Industries grew because Ethan Sterling was a brilliant businessman.

They never knew the truth.

The first major investment.

The supplier connections.

The emergency funding when the company nearly collapsed three years after it was founded.

Almost every turning point in Sterling Industries’ history had one thing in common.

My family was there.

And I was the person who made sure Ethan never had to worry about those details.

I protected him.

I protected his company.

I protected his reputation.

But yesterday, in front of three hundred people, he looked at me like I was just an accessory he could put away when he found someone more impressive.

Ethan entered the room confidently.

Then he saw the documents on the table.

His smile disappeared.

“Clara, what is this?”

I looked at him calmly.

“The beginning of a professional separation.”

He laughed softly.

“You’re seriously doing this because of a seating arrangement and a joke?”

A joke.

That was what he called ten years of humiliation.

I opened the first folder.

“Do you know how many supplier relationships Sterling Industries has because of my negotiations?”

He didn’t answer.

“Thirty-seven.”

I opened another document.

“Do you know how many contracts were personally reviewed by me before you signed your name?”

Silence.

“Two hundred and sixteen.”

The room remained quiet.

Because everyone there knew the numbers.

Everyone except the man who benefited from them.

Then Ethan looked at the lawyers.

“She’s overreacting.”

I almost smiled.

That sentence hurt more than anything else.

Because it proved he still didn’t understand.

I wasn’t leaving because he embarrassed me.

I was leaving because he finally showed me what he truly thought of me.

A person could be replaced.

A person could be hidden.

A person could be sent home to rest.

But the foundation?

The foundation always remained.

And Ethan had forgotten who built it.

That afternoon, Sterling Industries’ stock began to fall.

Investors started asking questions.

Not because I destroyed anything.

Because for the first time, they realized the person who had quietly kept everything running was no longer standing behind Ethan.

Then Olivia called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But curiosity won.

Her voice was different from the confident woman I saw on stage.

“Clara… we need to talk.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“About what?”

There was a long pause.

“About Ethan.”

I said nothing.

Then Olivia whispered something that made my entire body freeze.

“You don’t know what he promised me, do you?”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What did he promise you?”

Another silence.

Then she said:

“He told me Sterling Industries would belong to us after you left.”

I closed my eyes.

Not because I was surprised.

Because a small part of me had still hoped I was wrong.

But Olivia wasn’t finished.

“There is something else, Clara.”

“What?”

“He didn’t just plan to remove you from the company.”

My heartbeat slowed.

“He planned to remove you from his life.”

I stood up.

“What are you talking about?”

Her voice dropped.

“Check the documents he signed three months ago.”

The call ended.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

Then I opened the drawer where I kept all the company records.

And there it was.

A file I had never seen before.

A divorce agreement.

Already prepared.

Already signed.

Waiting for the right moment.

But beneath it was another document.

Something that made me realize Ethan’s mistake was much bigger than I thought.

Because he hadn’t only underestimated my role in Sterling Industries.

He had forgotten one important detail.

The company he was trying to take from me was never only his.

And the person who could destroy his perfect plan was not me.

It was the person who had helped build it from the beginning.

My father.
