PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO LEFT BEFORE HE COULD ABANDON HER

Adrián returned three days later.

He came home carrying a small gift box.

A necklace.

The same kind of thing he always gave me after disappointing me.

A beautiful object meant to cover an ugly truth.

He opened the door and called my name.

—Elena?

No answer.

He frowned.

Usually, even when I was angry, I would come out.

I would ask how Daniela was.

I would ask if she felt better.

I would pretend I didn’t care.

But this time, the house was completely silent.

He walked into the bedroom.

The closet was half empty.

My clothes were gone.

My suitcase was gone.

Only the wedding dress remained, hanging untouched.

For the first time, panic appeared on his face.

He took out his phone.

No missed calls.

No messages.

Nothing.

Because for the first time in years…

I wasn’t waiting for him to come back.

He called me.

I looked at the screen while sitting on the train heading toward Xinjiang.

His name appeared.

Adrián Zhou.

The man I had loved for six years.

The man I was supposed to marry the next day.

I watched the phone vibrate.

Then I turned it off.

A few minutes later, my best friend sent me a message.

“He is looking for you everywhere.”

I replied:

“Let him.”

Because I finally understood something.

A person who only realizes your value when you disappear never truly valued your presence.

When Adrián arrived at my parents’ house, my father opened the door.

The moment he saw him, his expression became cold.

“Where is Elena?”

Adrián looked nervous.

“Uncle, I need to talk to her.”

My father laughed.

“Talk?”

“Tomorrow was your wedding.”

Adrián lowered his head.

“I know.”

“No.”

My father stepped forward.

“You don’t know.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

Silence.

My mother stood behind him.

Her eyes were red.

But she didn’t cry.

“She waited six years for you.”

“Six years.”

“And the night before the wedding, you chose another woman.”

Adrián clenched his hands.

“Daniela was having a mental breakdown.”

My father interrupted.

“Then you should have married her.”

The sentence made him freeze.

Because that was the truth nobody had dared to say.

If Daniela was always his priority…

Why was I the one standing beside him?

Why was I the one preparing a wedding?

Why was I the one sacrificing my future?

Adrián looked at my mother.

“Where did she go?”

My mother answered calmly.

“To save lives.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“She accepted the Xinjiang medical team.”

The color disappeared from his face.

“When?”

“Two days ago.”

“She left?”

My mother looked at him.

“Yes.”

“And she didn’t tell me?”

“No.”

For the first time, Adrián felt what I had felt for years.

Being excluded.

Being the last person to know.

Being left behind.

Meanwhile, I arrived at the medical base.

The conditions were harder than I expected.

The weather was harsh.

The work was exhausting.

But strangely…

I felt peaceful.

Nobody here knew me as Adrián’s fiancée.

Nobody knew me as the woman who always forgave.

Here, I was just Dr. Elena Song.

A surgeon.

A person with my own value.

On my third day, I received an email.

The subject was:

“Wedding cancellation confirmation.”

I opened it.

The banquet.

The decorations.

The reservations.

Everything was officially canceled.

I stared at the screen.

Then I deleted the email.

That chapter was over.

But I didn’t know that back in the city, Adrián was facing something he never expected.

Daniela Lin had disappeared.

The woman he had rushed to protect.

The woman he chose over his wedding.

The woman he believed needed him the most.

Left behind only a message:

“Adrián, I realized something.”

“You never came to me because you loved me.”

“You came because you felt responsible.”

The message continued.

“And I don’t want to spend my life being someone’s obligation.”

Adrián read it again and again.

Because suddenly, he understood the cruelest truth.

For years, he thought Elena would always be there.

So he kept choosing someone else.

But Daniela left because he wasn’t enough.

And Elena left because she finally realized…

She deserved someone who would choose her first.

Three months later, Adrián saw my name in a medical journal.

Dr. Elena Song.

Lead surgeon of the Xinjiang emergency program.

The article praised my work.

My achievements.

My courage.

Not once did it mention him.

For the first time, he saw the woman I had become after walking away from him.

And he finally understood.

The wedding he postponed was not delayed.

It was the last chance he would ever have.

Because the woman who once waited six years for him…

No longer needed him at all.
