PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED WAITING FOR HIM

When I left the restaurant, I didn’t cry.

The rain outside was heavy.

It soaked my hair.

It soaked my clothes.

But it couldn’t compare with the coldness I felt inside.

Five years.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of standing behind Gabriel Torres.

Five years of making sure he succeeded while everyone believed he did it alone.

And in the end, I was just someone he could remove when another woman wanted my place.

I returned to the apartment that night.

The place everyone called our home.

But suddenly, I realized something.

It had never really been mine.

Every corner carried memories of Gabriel.

The sofa he chose.

The paintings he liked.

The furniture his mother said matched his status.

Even the bedroom.

The room where I had spent countless nights waiting for him to come home.

I walked to the closet.

Half of it was full of my clothes.

The other half belonged to him.

I took out a suitcase.

One by one, I packed.

No tears.

No hesitation.

Just leaving.

At midnight, my phone rang.

Gabriel.

I looked at the screen.

In the past, I would have answered immediately.

Even if I was hurt.

Even if I was angry.

I would always answer.

Because I was afraid of losing him.

But tonight…

I wasn’t afraid anymore.

I let it ring.

A second call.

Then a third.

Finally, a message appeared.

“Where are you?”

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I replied:

“Leaving.”

Only two words.

A few seconds later, he called again.

This time I answered.

“Valeria.”

His voice was annoyed.

“Don’t act childish.”

I smiled.

Childish?

After he humiliated me in front of everyone.

After he asked me to sign a divorce agreement to please another woman.

And I was the childish one?

“What do you want, Gabriel?”

There was silence.

Maybe he expected me to cry.

Maybe he expected me to ask him to reconsider.

But I didn’t.

“You signed too quickly.”

His voice softened.

“I thought you would at least ask me why.”

I looked around the empty room.

“Why?”

The question sounded strange.

Because after five years, I already knew the answer.

“Because Isabella…”

I interrupted him.

“Don’t.”

Silence.

“Don’t explain her.”

“Don’t explain yourself.”

“Don’t explain this marriage.”

He became quiet.

For the first time, he didn’t know what to say.

I continued:

“You wanted freedom.”

“Now you have it.”

“Valeria…”

I ended the call.

Then I removed my wedding ring.

I placed it on the table.

Beside the divorce agreement.

The next morning, I went to Torres Group.

Not as Gabriel’s wife.

Not as the woman who stood behind him.

I went as Valeria Montes.

The marketing department was shocked when I entered.

Everyone knew.

Everyone had seen the rumors.

Everyone knew Isabella was now the woman beside Gabriel.

My assistant Lucas approached carefully.

“Secretary Valeria…”

I smiled.

“You can call me Valeria.”

He froze.

Because everyone knew that was the first time I had said that.

I spent the morning organizing my resignation.

Five years of documents.

Projects.

Strategies.

Client relationships.

Everything I had built.

I left them all properly.

Because unlike Gabriel…

I didn’t destroy things when I left.

Before noon, Gabriel’s secretary called.

“Mrs. Torres, Mr. Torres wants to see you.”

I corrected:

“Ms. Montes.”

A pause.

Then:

“Mr. Torres wants to see you.”

I entered his office.

Gabriel was standing by the window.

He looked tired.

Different from the confident man at the restaurant.

“What is this?”

He threw my resignation letter onto the desk.

“You are leaving?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Because of yesterday?”

“No.”

He frowned.

“Then why?”

I looked at him.

“Because yesterday I finally saw the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That I spent five years being your wife only when it was convenient.”

His expression changed.

“That’s not fair.”

I smiled.

“Fair?”

“The woman who built your schedules, fixed your mistakes, protected your reputation, and supported your company for five years…”

“I was fair enough.”

He looked away.

For a moment, I thought he wanted to apologize.

But then his phone rang.

The name on the screen appeared.

Isabella.

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

Even now.

Even after losing me.

He still chose her first.

I walked toward the door.

“Valeria.”

I stopped.

His voice was lower.

“Are you really not coming back?”

I looked at him.

The man I once loved.

The man I once believed was my entire world.

Then I answered:

“No.”

“Because the woman who would beg you to stay…”

“Stayed in that restaurant.”

I closed the door.

Gabriel remained alone.

And he still didn’t understand.

He thought he had lost a wife.

But the truth was…

He had lost the woman who made him a better man.

And the most painful part?

He would only realize her value after someone else discovered it first.
