Part 2: The Billionaire Who Slowly Learned To Smile Again

I thought my life had finally become simple.

A roof over my head.

Food on the table.

A child who needed me.

That was enough.

After my divorce, I had stopped dreaming about love.

Love was something people talked about when they had never experienced being abandoned.

When my ex-husband threw my suitcase outside the door, he didn’t even look guilty.

He only said:

“Clara, you should think about why I stopped loving you.”

At that moment, I realized something.

A person who has already decided to leave will always find a reason.

So I stopped asking why.

I stopped begging.

And I started surviving.

That was why Ethan Blackwood’s mansion didn’t scare me.

A billionaire.

A cold man.

A child with emotional problems.

It was still better than sleeping outside.

The next morning, I woke up earlier than everyone else.

I quietly prepared breakfast.

Not because anyone ordered me to.

It was just a habit from my previous marriage.

Years of taking care of someone had trained my body to wake up before sunrise.

When Oliver came downstairs, he stopped at the entrance.

He looked at the table.

Then at me.

“You made food?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

He crossed his arms.

“My dad says strangers shouldn’t make decisions in this house.”

I looked at him seriously.

“Your dad is right.”

Oliver seemed surprised.

“Then why did you cook?”

“Because cooking doesn’t mean I own the house.”

I placed a small plate in front of him.

“It only means someone thought you might be hungry.”

The little boy stared at the food.

Then looked away.

“I don’t want it.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

Oliver blinked.

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

He seemed confused.

Most adults probably forced him.

Negotiated.

Begged.

But I didn’t.

I simply started eating my own breakfast.

After a minute…

A small voice came from across the table.

“Is it good?”

I looked up.

Oliver was pretending not to look at my plate.

I smiled.

“Not bad.”

“Only not bad?”

I nodded seriously.

“The chef needs improvement.”

Oliver’s eyes widened.

“Who is the chef?”

I pointed at myself.

“Me.”

He tried to hold back his laugh.

But failed.

A tiny sound escaped.

A laugh.

And at that exact moment…

Ethan walked into the dining room.

He stopped.

Because he hadn’t heard that sound in a very long time.

His son laughing.

Ethan looked at Oliver.

Then at me.

“What happened?”

Oliver immediately sat straighter.

“Clara’s food is bad.”

Ethan frowned.

“Then why are you laughing?”

Oliver thought for a moment.

“Because she admitted it.”

Ethan was silent.

I almost smiled.

The billionaire who controlled thousands of employees…

Had no idea how to respond to a four-year-old.

Later that afternoon, the butler came to find me.

“Miss Bennett.”

I turned.

“Yes?”

“The gentleman wants to speak with you.”

My heart tightened slightly.

I thought I had done something wrong.

Maybe the dog situation was too much.

Maybe Oliver’s eating habits were unacceptable.

When I entered Ethan’s office, he was standing near the window.

The room was enormous.

Cold.

Exactly like him.

“You need to understand your position here.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“You are here to take care of Oliver.”

“Yes.”

“Not to replace his mother.”

I paused.

Then answered calmly:

“I never intended to.”

Something changed in his expression.

Most people probably tried to impress him.

Tried to become Mrs. Blackwood.

But I didn’t.

I only wanted a job.

A place to sleep.

A chance to rebuild my life.

“I appreciate that.”

It was the first time I heard warmth in his voice.

I looked at him.

The famous billionaire.

The man everyone feared.

But behind those eyes…

There was exhaustion.

A loneliness I recognized.

Because I had felt the same.

That night, Oliver had a nightmare.

The entire mansion woke up.

The servants tried everything.

Nothing worked.

Then I walked into his room.

I sat beside him.

“Oliver.”

His eyes opened.

“Clara…”

“Are you scared?”

He nodded.

I thought for a moment.

Then pointed toward the window.

“Do you know why the moon always follows us?”

Oliver looked confused.

“Because it likes you?”

I smiled.

“Exactly.”

“Even when you move houses.”

“Even when you go somewhere new.”

“The moon remembers where you are.”

Oliver stared outside.

“Really?”

“Really.”

A few minutes later…

He fell asleep again.

When I turned around…

Ethan was standing at the door.

I froze.

“I didn’t hear you come in.”

He looked at his son.

Then at me.

“Neither did I.”

I didn’t understand.

He continued:

“For years…”

“No one could calm him down.”

His voice became quiet.

“Not doctors.”

“Not tutors.”

“Not therapists.”

“He always pushed everyone away.”

I looked at Oliver sleeping peacefully.

“He just needed someone to be patient with him.”

Ethan looked at me.

And for a second…

The cold billionaire disappeared.

He looked like a tired father who had been carrying everything alone.

“Clara.”

“Yes?”

“Why did you agree to come here?”

I thought about that night.

The suitcase.

The street.

The advertisement.

Then I answered honestly:

“Because I had nowhere else to go.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

Maybe because he finally realized…

The woman standing in front of him wasn’t chasing his money.

She was someone who had lost everything…

And still chose to be kind.

The next morning, my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

My ex-husband.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“Clara.”

His voice was familiar.

But it no longer affected me.

“I heard you found a new job.”

“Yes.”

“With a wealthy family?”

“Yes.”

He laughed softly.

“So you found a way to live comfortably after all.”

I frowned.

“What do you want?”

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“I want to meet.”

“Why?”

His voice lowered.

“Because I made a mistake.”

I looked toward the garden.

Oliver was running with the dog.

Ethan stood nearby watching him.

And for the first time…

That mansion didn’t feel like a temporary shelter.

It felt like a place where I belonged.

“I’m busy.”

My ex-husband was silent.

“Clara…”

“I have a life now.”

I ended the call.

But I didn’t know…

That Ethan had heard the entire conversation.

And when he looked at me afterward…

His eyes were no longer looking at a temporary stepmother.

They were looking at the woman who had quietly changed his son’s world.

And maybe…

His too.
