Part 2: The Day Mateo Discovered The Woman He Lost Was Never Ordinary

For the first week after the divorce, Mateo still believed everything could be fixed.

He thought I was just hurt.

He thought I was angry.

He thought, after some time passed, I would calm down and return to the woman who always waited for him.

Because that was the version of me he knew.

The woman who forgave.

The woman who compromised.

The woman who loved him more than herself.

But he didn’t understand something.

The moment I signed those papers…

I had already let go.

Seven days later, Mateo came back to collect his things.

I was sitting in the living room when he entered.

He looked around.

The same apartment.

The same furniture.

The same place where we had spent five years together.

But somehow…

It no longer felt like our home.

It felt like a place I had already left behind.

“You didn’t change anything.”

His voice sounded strange.

I looked up from my laptop.

“Why would I?”

He looked at me.

“I thought you would remove everything related to me.”

I smiled slightly.

“Mateo.”

“Yes?”

“Not everything that ends needs to be destroyed.”

His eyes moved away.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something.

But he didn’t.

He started packing his clothes.

A few shirts.

Some books.

A watch.

Small things.

Things that once filled the apartment.

I watched quietly.

Then he stopped in front of the bookshelf.

There was an old photo frame.

Our college graduation.

Back then, we had nothing.

No money.

No connections.

Just dreams.

Mateo picked it up.

“You still keep this?”

I looked at the photo.

“Yes.”

He seemed surprised.

“Why?”

I answered honestly:

“Because that person in the photo was real.”

His fingers tightened around the frame.

“And me?”

I looked at him.

“You changed.”

That sentence hurt him more than anger.

Because deep down…

He knew.

Before leaving, Mateo finally asked the question he had avoided for days.

“Sofia.”

I looked at him.

“Did you really think I betrayed you?”

I was silent.

Then I shook my head.

“No.”

His expression softened.

“Then why?”

“Because betrayal is not only about love.”

I closed my laptop.

“It is also about trust.”

“You hid conversations.”

“You deleted messages.”

“You lied about where you were.”

“You let me doubt myself.”

I looked directly at him.

“Maybe you never physically betrayed me.”

“But you made me feel like I was the only person in our marriage who was trying.”

Mateo lowered his head.

For the first time…

He had no defense.

That afternoon, Ximena came to see me.

She stood outside my door.

Her eyes were red.

“Sofia.”

I opened the door but didn’t invite her in.

“Why are you here?”

She looked hurt.

“Are we really strangers now?”

I stared at her.

Twelve years of friendship.

The person I trusted most.

The person I once called my sister.

“I don’t know.”

She froze.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I nodded.

“I believe you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Then why are you treating me like this?”

I smiled sadly.

“Because sometimes people don’t need to intend to hurt you.”

“They just need to choose themselves every time.”

Silence.

Ximena looked away.

“I love Mateo.”

The honesty surprised me.

But not because it hurt.

Because it confirmed something I already knew.

I only said:

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“You’re not angry?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Because I stopped fighting for someone who already made his choice.”

Two weeks later, Astra Technology announced a major acquisition.

The news spread everywhere.

Astra Technology founder Regina — the mysterious genius behind seventeen international patents — appears for the first time.

The business world exploded.

Everyone wanted to know who Regina was.

The anonymous woman who built a technology empire worth billions.

At the same time…

Mateo saw the news.

He stared at the screen.

Then looked at the photo.

The woman standing beside Astra’s executives.

The woman whose face had been hidden for years.

His expression slowly changed.

Because he recognized those eyes.

That smile.

That calm expression.

Impossible.

“No…”

He immediately searched the information.

Then another article appeared.

Regina’s real identity remains private, but sources confirm she worked as a programmer under the name Sofia.

The phone slipped from his hand.

Sofia.

The woman he thought was ordinary.

The woman he thought needed him.

The woman he believed he was leaving behind.

Was the founder of one of the most valuable companies in the country.

That night, Mateo called me.

I looked at the screen.

His name appeared.

For a few seconds…

I considered answering.

Then I did.

“Hello?”

There was silence.

Long silence.

“Sofia…”

“Yes?”

His voice was different.

Not confident.

Not arrogant.

Almost afraid.

“I saw the news.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked out the window.

The city lights reflected on the glass.

“Tell you what?”

“That you were Regina.”

I smiled faintly.

“Would it have changed anything?”

Mateo stopped breathing.

Because that was the question he couldn’t answer.

If he had known…

Would he have loved me more?

Would he have chosen me?

Or would he have simply valued what I represented?

I didn’t want to know anymore.

“Sofia.”

“Yes?”

“Did you ever love me?”

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

His breathing became heavier.

“Then why did you leave?”

I answered quietly:

“Because loving you was no longer enough to save myself.”

The call became silent.

After a long moment, Mateo whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at the divorce certificate on my desk.

The red paper that once represented the end of my marriage.

Now it represented my freedom.

“I know.”

“Goodbye, Mateo.”

I ended the call.

Years ago, I thought losing Mateo would destroy my life.

I was wrong.

Losing him was the moment I finally found mine.

The woman he lost was not just a wife.

Not just a programmer.

Not just someone who waited at home.

She was Sofia.

She was Regina.

She was someone who never needed to be chosen by anyone.

Because she had finally chosen herself.
